SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Foi nessa época que se levantou Matatias, filho de João, filho de Simeão, sacerdote da família de Joarib, que veio de Jerusalém se estabelecer em Modin.	1 About then, Mattathias son of John, son of Simeon, a priest of the line of Joarib, left Jerusalem andsettled in Modein.
2 Tinha ele cinco filhos: João, apelidado Gadis,	2 He had five sons, John known as Gaddi,
3 Simão, alcunhado Tasi,	3 Simon cal ed Thassi,
4 Judas, chamado Macabeu,	4 Judas cal ed Maccabaeus,
5 Eleazar, cognominado Avarã, e Jônatas, chamado Afos.	5 Eleazar, cal ed Avaran, and Jonathan cal ed Apphus.
6 Vendo as abominações praticadas em Judá e em Jerusalém, exclamou: Ai de mim, por que nasci eu, para ver a ruína de meu povo e da cidade santa,	6 When he saw the blasphemies being committed in Judah and Jerusalem,
7 e ficar sem fazer nada, enquanto ela é entregue ao poder de seus inimigos	7 he said, 'Alas that I should have been born to witness the ruin of my people and the ruin of the HolyCity, and to sit by while she is delivered over to her enemies, and the sanctuary into the hand of foreigners.
8 e seu centro religioso abandonado aos estrangeiros? Seu templo tornou-se como um homem desonrado	8 'Her Temple has become like someone of no repute,
9 e os vasos sagrados, que eram o motivo de seu orgulho, levados como para um cativeiro; seus filhos foram trucidados nas ruas e os seus jovens sucumbiram ao gládio do inimigo.	9 the vessels that were her glory have been carried off as booty, her babies have been slaughtered inher streets, her young men by the enemy's sword.
10 Que povo há que não tenha herdado de seus atributos reais, que não se tenha apoderado dos seus despojos?	10 Is there a nation that has not claimed a share of her royal prerogatives, that has not taken some of herspoils?
11 Toda a sua glória desapareceu e, de livre que era, tornou-se escrava.	11 Al her ornaments have been snatched from her, her former freedom has become slavery.
12 Eis que tudo o que tínhamos de sagrado, de belo, de glorioso, foi assolado e profanado pelas nações.	12 See how the Holy Place, our beauty, our glory, is now laid waste, see how the gentiles have profanedit!
13 Por que viver ainda?	13 What have we left to live for?'
14 Matatias e seus filhos rasgaram suas vestes, cobriram-se de sacos, e choravam amargamente.	14 Mattathias and his sons tore their garments, put on sackcloth, and observed deep mourning.
15 Sobrevieram enviados do rei a Modin, para impor a apostasia e obrigar a sacrificar.	15 The king's commissioners who were enforcing the apostasy came to the town of Modein for thesacrifices.
16 Muitos dos israelitas uniram-se a eles, mas Matatias e seus filhos permaneceram firmes.	16 Many Israelites gathered round them, but Mattathias and his sons drew apart.
17 Em resposta disseram-lhe os que vinham da parte do rei: Possuis nesta cidade notável influência e consideração, teus irmãos e teus filhos te dão autoridade.	17 The king's commissioners then addressed Mattathias as fol ows, 'You are a respected leader, a greatman in this town; you have sons and brothers to support you.
18 Vem, pois, como primeiro, executar a ordem do rei, como o fizeram todas as nações, os habitantes de Judá e os que ficaram em Jerusalém. Serás contado, tu e teus filhos, entre os amigos do rei; a ti e aos teus filhos o rei vos honrará, cumulando-vos de prata, de ouro e de presentes.	18 Be the first to step forward and conform to the king's decree, as all the nations have done, and theleaders of Judah and the survivors in Jerusalem; you and your sons shal be reckoned among the Friends of theKing, you and your sons wil be honoured with gold and silver and many presents.'
19 Matatias respondeu-lhes: Ainda mesmo que todas as nações que se acham no reino do rei o escutassem, de modo que todos renegassem a fé de seus pais e aquiescessem às suas ordens,	19 Raising his voice, Mattathias retorted, 'Even if every nation living in the king's dominions obeys him,each forsaking its ancestral religion to conform to his decrees,
20 eu, meus filhos e meus irmãos, perseveraremos na Aliança concluída por nossos antepassados.	20 I, my sons and my brothers will stil fol ow the covenant of our ancestors.
21 Que Deus nos preserve de abandonar a lei e os mandamentos!	21 May Heaven preserve us from forsaking the Law and its observances.
22 Não obedeceremos a essas ordens do rei e não nos desviaremos de nossa religião, nem para a direita, nem para a esquerda.	22 As for the king's orders, we will not fol ow them: we shal not swerve from our own religion either toright or to left.'
23 Mal acabara de falar, eis que um judeu se adiantou para sacrificar no altar de Modin, à vista de todos, conforme as ordens do rei.	23 As he finished speaking, a Jew came forward in the sight of al to offer sacrifice on the altar in Modeinas the royal edict required.
24 Viu-o Matatias e, no ardor de seu zelo, sentiu estremecerem-se suas entranhas. Num ímpeto de justa cólera arrojou-se e matou o homem no altar.	24 When Mattathias saw this, he was fired with zeal; stirred to the depth of his being, he gave vent to hislegitimate anger, threw himself on the man and slaughtered him on the altar.
25 Matou ao mesmo tempo o oficial incumbido da ordem de sacrificar e demoliu o altar.	25 At the same time he killed the king's commissioner who was there to enforce the sacrifice, and toredown the altar.
26 Com semelhante gesto mostrou ele seu amor pela lei, como agiu Finéias a respeito de Zamri, filho de Salum.	26 In his zeal for the Law he acted as Phinehas had against Zimri son of Salu.
27 Em altos brados Matatias elevou a voz então na cidade: Quem for fiel à lei e permanecer firme na Aliança, saia e siga-me.	27 Then Mattathias went through the town, shouting at the top of his voice, 'Let everyone who has anyzeal for the Law and takes his stand on the covenant come out and follow me.'
28 Assim, com seus filhos, fugiu em direção às montanhas, abandonando todos os seus bens na cidade.	28 Then he fled with his sons into the hills, leaving al their possessions behind in the town.
29 Então, uma grande parte dos que procuravam a lei e a justiça, encaminhou-se para o deserto.	29 Many people who were concerned for virtue and justice went down to the desert and stayed there,
30 Ali refugiaram-se, com seus filhos, suas mulheres e seus rebanhos, porque a perseguição se encarniçava contra eles.	30 taking with them their sons, their wives and their cattle, so oppressive had their sufferings become.
31 Contaram aos oficiais do rei e às forças acantonadas em Jerusalém, na cidadela de Davi, que certo número de judeus, culpáveis de terem transgredido a ordem real, havia descido ao deserto, para ali se ocultar e que muitos se haviam precipitado em seu seguimento.	31 Word was brought to the royal officials and forces stationed in Jerusalem, in the City of David, thatthose who had repudiated the king's edict had gone down to the hiding places in the desert.
32 Os sírios arremessaram-se ao encalço deles e os alcançaram, depois se prepararam para agredi-los no dia de sábado.	32 A strong detachment went after them, and when it came up with them ranged itself against them inbattle formation, preparing to attack them on the Sabbath day,
33 Isso basta, agora, gritaram-lhes eles, saí, obedecei à ordem do rei, e vivereis.	33 and said, 'Enough of this! Come out and do as the king orders and you will be spared.'
34 Não sairemos, replicaram os judeus, e nem obedeceremos ao rei, com a profanação do dia de sábado.	34 The others, however, replied, 'We refuse to come out, and we wil not obey the king's orders andprofane the Sabbath day.'
35 Instantaneamente os sírios travaram combate contra eles;	35 The royal forces at once went into action,
36 mas eles não responderam, não atiraram uma pedra e não barricaram seu refúgio.	36 but the others offered no opposition; not a stone was thrown, there was no barricading of the hidingplaces.
37 Que morramos todos inocentes! O céu e a terra nos servirão de testemunha, de que nos matais injustamente.	37 They only said, 'Let us all die innocent; let heaven and earth bear witness that you are massacring uswith no pretence of justice.'
38 E foi assim que os inimigos se lançaram sobre eles em dia de sábado, morrendo eles, suas mulheres e seus filhos, com seu gado, em número de mil.	38 The attack was pressed home on the Sabbath itself, and they were slaughtered, with their wives andchildren and cattle, to the number of one thousand persons.
39 Matatias e seus amigos o souberam e comoveram-se muito;	39 When the news reached Mattathias and his friends, they mourned them bitterly
40 mas disseram uns aos outros: Se todos nós agirmos como nossos irmãos, e se não pelejarmos contra os estrangeiros para pormos a salvo nossas vidas e nossas leis, exterminar-nos-ão bem depressa da terra.	40 and said to one another, 'If we al do as our brothers have done, and refuse to fight the gentiles for ourlives and institutions, they wil only destroy us the sooner from the earth.'
41 Tomaram, pois, naquele dia a seguinte resolução: Mesmo que nos ataquem em dia de sábado, pugnaremos contra eles e não nos deixaremos matar a todos nós, como o fizeram nossos irmãos no seu esconderijo.	41 So then and there they came to this decision, 'If anyone attacks us on the Sabbath day, whoever hemay be, we shall resist him; we must not al be kil ed, as our brothers were in the hiding places.'
42 Então se ajuntou a eles o grupo dos judeus assideus, particularmente valentes em Israel, apegados todos à lei;	42 Soon they were joined by the Hasidaean party, stout fighting men of Israel, each one a volunteer onthe side of the Law.
43 e todos os que fugiam das perseguições se ajuntaram do mesmo modo a eles e os reforçaram.	43 Al the refugees from the persecution ral ied to them, giving them added support.
44 Formaram, pois, um exército e na sua ira e indignação massacraram certo número de prevaricadores e de traidores da lei; os outros procuraram refúgio junto aos estrangeiros.	44 They organised themselves into an armed force, striking down the sinners in their anger, and therenegades in their fury, and those who escaped them fled to the gentiles for safety.
45 Assim Matatias e seus amigos percorreram o país, destruíram os altares e	45 Mattathias and his friends made a tour, overthrowing the altars
46 circuncidaram à força as crianças, ainda incircuncisas nas fronteiras de Israel,	46 and forcibly circumcising al the boys they found uncircumcised in the territories of Israel.
47 e perseguiram os sírios orgulhosos. Sua empresa alcançou bom êxito.	47 They hunted down the upstarts and managed their campaign to good effect.
48 Arrancaram a lei do poder dos gentios e dos reis, e não permitiram que prevalecesse o mal.	48 They wrested the Law out of the control of the gentiles and the kings and reduced the sinners toimpotence.
49 Ora, chegou para Matatias o dia de sua morte e ele disse a seus filhos: O que domina até este momento é o orgulho, o ódio, a desordem e a cólera.	49 As the days of Mattathias were drawing to a close, he said to his sons, 'Arrogance and outrage arenow in the ascendant; it is a period of turmoil and bitter hatred.
50 Sede, pois, agora, meus filhos, os defensores da lei e dai vossa vida pela Aliança de vossos pais.	50 This is the time, my children, for you to have a burning zeal for the Law and to give your lives for thecovenant of our ancestors.
51 Recordai-vos dos feitos de vossos maiores em seu tempo, e merecereis uma grande glória e um nome eterno.	51 Remember the deeds performed by our ancestors, each in his generation, and you wil win greathonour and everlasting renown.
52 Porventura, não foi na prova que Abraão foi achado fiel? E não lhe foi isso imputado em justiça?	52 Was not Abraham tested and found faithful, was that not considered as justifying him?
53 José observou os mandamentos na sua desgraça e veio a ser o senhor do Egito.	53 Joseph in the time of his distress maintained the Law, and so became lord of Egypt.
54 Finéias, nosso antepassado, por ter sido inflamado de zelo, recebeu a promessa de um perpétuo sacerdócio.	54 Phinehas, our father, in return for his burning zeal, received the covenant of everlasting priesthood.
55 Josué, cumprindo a palavra de Deus, veio a ser juiz em Israel.	55 Joshua, for carrying out his task, became judge of Israel.
56 Caleb deu testemunho na assembléia e herdou a terra.	56 Caleb, for his testimony before the assembled people, received an inheritance in the land.
57 Por todos os séculos, em vista de sua piedade, mereceu Davi o trono real.	57 David for his generous heart inherited the throne of an everlasting kingdom.
58 Porque ardia em zelo pela lei, Elias foi arrebatado ao céu.	58 Elijah for his consuming fervour for the Law was caught up to heaven itself.
59 Ananias, Azarias e Mizael foram salvos das chamas por terem tido fé.	59 Hananiah, Azariah and Mishael, for their fidelity, were saved from the flame.
60 Daniel, na sua retidão, foi livre da boca dos leões.	60 Daniel for his singleness of heart was rescued from the lion's jaws.
61 Recordai-vos assim, de geração em geração, de que todos os que esperam em Deus não desfalecem.	61 Know then that, generation after generation, no one who hopes in him will be overcome.
62 Não receeis as ameaças do pecador, porque sua glória chega à lama e aos vermes:	62 Do not fear the threats of the sinner, al his brave show must come to the dunghill and the worms.
63 hoje ele se eleva e amanhã desaparece, porque tornará ao pó, e seus planos são frustrados.	63 Exalted today, tomorrow he is nowhere to be found, for he has returned to the dust he came from andhis scheming is brought to nothing.
64 Quanto a vós, meus filhos, sede corajosos e destemidos em observar a lei, porque por ela chegareis à glória.	64 My children, be resolute and courageous for the Law, for it wil bring you glory.
65 Aqui tendes Simão, irmão vosso, eu sei que ele é homem de conselho, ouvi-o sempre e será para vós um pai.	65 'Here is your brother Simeon, I know he is a man of sound judgement. Listen to him al your lives; lethim take your father's place.
66 Judas Macabeu, bravo desde a juventude: será o general do exército e dirigirá a guerra contra os gentios.	66 Judas Maccabaeus, strong and brave from his youth, let him be your general and conduct the waragainst the gentiles.
67 Atraireis a vós todos os que observam a lei e vingareis vosso povo.	67 The rest of you are to enrol in your ranks al those who keep the Law, and to assure the vengeance ofyour people.
68 Pagai aos gentios o que nos fizeram e atendei aos preceitos da lei.	68 Pay back the gentiles to the ful , and hold fast to the ordinance of the Law.'
69 Depois disso abençoou-os e foi unir-se aos seus pais.	69 Then he blessed them and was joined to his ancestors.
70 Morreu no ano cento e quarenta e seis. Seus filhos sepultaram-no em Modin, entre as sepulturas de seus antepassados, e todo o Israel o chorou dolorosamente.	70 He died in the year 146 and was buried in his ancestral tomb at Modein, and al Israel mourned himdeeply.
