SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 O rei Davi estava velho, avançado em anos, e por mais que o cobrissem de roupas, não se aquecia.	1 King David was now a very old man, and though wrapped in bedclothes he could not keep warm.
2 Seus familiares disseram-lhe: Busquemos para nosso senhor, o rei, uma donzela virgem que sirva o rei e tenha cuidado dele, e durma em seu seio para que ele se aqueça.	2 So his servants said to him, 'Let us find a young girl for my lord the king, to wait on the king and lookafter him; she wil lie close beside you and this wil keep my lord the king warm.'
3 Procuraram, pois, em toda a terra de Israel, uma donzela formosa; encontraram Abisag, a sunamita, e levaram-na ao rei.	3 Having searched for a beautiful girl throughout the territory of Israel, they found Abishag of Shunem andbrought her to the king.
4 Essa donzela era muito formosa. Ela cuidava do rei e o servia, mas o rei não a possuiu.	4 The girl was very beautiful. She looked after the king and waited on him but the king did not haveintercourse with her.
5 Ora, Adonias, filho de Hagit, encheu-se de orgulho e exclamou: Sou eu quem reinará. Adquiriu para si um carro e cavalos, e tomou uma escolta de cinqüenta homens.	5 Now Adonijah son of Haggith was growing pretentious and saying, 'I shal be king!' Accordingly, heprocured a chariot and team with fifty guards to run ahead of him.
6 Nunca seu pai o contrariou, dizendo: Por que fazes isso? Além disso, ele era muito belo e {na idade} seguia imediatamente a Absalão.	6 Never once in his life had his father crossed him by saying, 'Why are you behaving like that?' He wasvery handsome too; his mother had given birth to him after Absalom.
7 Tendo feito reuniões com Joab, filho de Sarvia, e com o sacerdote Abiatar, esses tornaram-se seus adeptos.	7 He conferred with Joab son of Zeruiah and with the priest Abiathar, who both ral ied to Adonijah's cause;
8 O sacerdote Sadoc, porém, bem como Banaías, filho de Jojada, o profeta Natã, Semei, Rei e os valentes de Davi, não abraçaram o seu partido.	8 but neither Zadok the priest, nor Benaiah son of Jehoiada, nor the prophet Nathan, nor Shimei and Rei,nor David's champions, supported Adonijah.
9 Adonias, tendo imolado ovelhas, bois e bezerros cevados junto à pedra de Zoelet, ao lado de En-Rogel, convidou todos os seus irmãos, filhos do rei, e todos os de Judá que estavam a serviço do rei.	9 One day when Adonijah was sacrificing sheep, oxen and fattened calves at the Sliding Stone which isbeside the Ful er's Spring, he invited al his brothers, the royal princes, and al the men of Judah in the king'sservice;
10 Mas não convidou o profeta Natã, nem Banaías, nem os valentes, nem o seu irmão Salomão.	10 but he did not invite the prophet Nathan, or Benaiah, or the champions, or his brother Solomon.
11 Disse Natã a Betsabé, mãe de Salomão: Não soubeste que Adonias, filho de Hagit, se proclamou rei, sem que o saiba Davi, nosso senhor?	11 Nathan then said to Bathsheba, Solomon's mother, 'Have you not heard that, unknown to our lordDavid, Adonijah son of Haggith has become king?
12 Escuta: vou dar-te um conselho, para que salves a tua vida e a de teu filho Salomão.	12 Wel , this is my advice to you if you want to save your own life and the life of your son Solomon.
13 Vai ter com o rei Davi e dize-lhe: Ó rei, meu senhor, não juraste à tua serva que Salomão, meu filho, reinaria depois de ti, e se sentaria no teu trono? Por que então Adonias se proclamou rei?	13 Go straight in to King David and say, "My lord king, did you not make your servant this promise onoath: Your son Solomon is to be king after me; he is the one who is to sit on my throne? How is it, then, thatAdonijah is king?"
14 Enquanto estiveres falando assim ao rei, entrarei e confirmarei o que tiveres dito.	14 And while you are stil there talking to the king, I shal come in after you and confirm what you say.'
15 Foi Betsabé ter com o rei no seu quarto. {O rei estava já muito velho, e Abisag, a sunamita, cuidava dele.}	15 So Bathsheba went to the king in his room (he was very old and Abishag of Shunem was in attendanceon him).
16 Betsabé inclinou-se e prostrou-se diante do rei. Este disse-lhe: Que queres?	16 She knelt, prostrated herself before the king, and the king said, 'What do you want?'
17 Ela respondeu: Meu senhor, prometeste com juramento à tua serva que meu filho Salomão reinaria depois de ti, e se sentaria no teu trono.	17 'My lord,' she replied, 'you swore to your servant by Yahweh your God, "Your son Solomon is to beking after me; he is the one who is to sit on my throne."
18 Ora, eis que Adonias se proclamou rei, sem que o saiba o rei, meu senhor.	18 And now here is Adonijah king, and you, my lord king, knowing nothing about it!
19 Imolou bois, bezerros cevados e grande quantidade de ovelhas, e convidou todos os príncipes, o sacerdote Abiatar e o general Joab; mas não convidou o teu servo Salomão.	19 He has sacrificed quantities of oxen, fattened calves and sheep, and invited all the royal princes, thepriest Abiathar, and Joab the army commander; but he has not invited your servant Solomon.
20 Ó rei, meu senhor, todo o Israel tem os olhos postos em ti, esperando que declares quem há de tomar o teu lugar no trono depois de ti.	20 Yet you are the man, my lord king, to whom al Israel looks, to tel them who is to succeed my lord theking.
21 Do contrário, logo que o rei, meu senhor, dormir com os seus pais, eu e meu filho Salomão seremos tratados como criminosos.	21 And when my lord the king fal s asleep with his ancestors, Solomon and I shal be made to suffer forthis.'
22 Falava ela ainda ao rei, quando se apresentou o profeta Natã.	22 She was stil speaking to the king when the prophet Nathan came in.
23 Disseram ao rei: Está aí o profeta Natã. Ele entrou e prostrou-se com o rosto por terra diante do rei.	23 The king was told, 'The prophet Nathan is here'; and he came into the king's presence and prostratedhimself on his face before the king.
24 Em seguida disse: Ó rei, meu senhor, porventura declaraste: Adonias reinará depois de mim e se sentará no meu trono?	24 'My lord king,' said Nathan, 'is this, then, your decree, "Adonijah is to be king after me; he is the onewho is to sit on my throne"?
25 Pois ele desceu hoje para imolar bois, bezerros cevados e grande quantidade de ovelhas, tendo convidado todos os príncipes, os generais e o sacerdote Abiatar, os quais estão comendo e bebendo com ele, e gritando: Viva o rei Adonias!	25 For he has gone down today and sacrificed quantities of oxen, fattened calves and sheep, and invitedal the royal princes, the army commanders, and the priest Abiathar; and they are there now, eating and drinkingin his presence and shouting, "Long live King Adonijah!"
26 Não fomos, porém, convidados nem eu, teu servo, nem o sacerdote Sadoc, nem Banaías, filho de Jojada, nem teu servo Salomão.	26 He has not, however, invited me your servant, Zadok the priest, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, or yourservant Solomon.
27 Será do agrado de meu senhor e rei que assim se faça? Porque não deste a conhecer a teus servos quem deverá sentar-se depois de ti no trono do rei, meu senhor.	27 Can it be that this is done with my lord the king's approval and that you have not told those loyal to youwho is to succeed to the throne of my lord the king?'
28 O rei respondeu: Chamai-me Betsabé. Ela entrou e ficou de pé diante dele;	28 King David then spoke. 'Cal Bathsheba to me,' he said. And she came into the king's presence andstood before him.
29 o rei fez-lhe este juramento: Pela vida de Deus que me livrou de toda a angústia,	29 Then the king swore this oath, 'As Yahweh lives, who has delivered me from all adversity,
30 o que te jurei pelo Senhor, Deus de Israel, dizendo: Teu filho Salomão reinará depois de mim e sentar-se-á no meu trono em meu lugar, isso vou cumprir hoje.	30 just as I swore to you by Yahweh, God of Israel, that your son Solomon should be king after me andtake my place on my throne, so I shal bring it about this very day.'
31 Betsabé inclinou-se diante do rei, prostrando-se com a face por terra, e disse: Viva o rei Davi, meu senhor, para sempre!	31 Bathsheba knelt down, prostrated herself on her face before the king and said, 'May my lord KingDavid live for ever!'
32 O rei Davi disse: Chamai-me o sacerdote Sadoc, o profeta Natã, e Banaías, filho de Jojada. Tendo-se eles apresentado diante do rei, este disse-lhes:	32 Then King David said, 'Summon Zadok the priest, the prophet Nathan and Benaiah son of Jehoiada.'So they came into the king's presence.
33 Tomai convosco os servos de vosso amo, fazei montar na minha mula o meu filho Salomão, e levai-o a Gião.	33 'Take the royal guard with you,' said the king, 'mount my son Solomon on my own mule and escort himdown to Gihon.
34 Ali o sacerdote Sadoc e o profeta Natã o ungirão rei de Israel. Tocareis então a trombeta e direis: Viva o rei Salomão!	34 There Zadok the priest and the prophet Nathan are to anoint him king of Israel; then sound the trumpetand shout, "Long live King Solomon!"
35 Voltareis depois atrás dele, e ele virá sentar-se no meu trono para reinar em meu lugar; pois é a ele que estabeleço chefe de Israel e de Judá.	35 Then you are to escort him back, and he is then to assume my throne and be king in place of me, forhe is the man whom I have appointed as ruler of Israel and of Judah.'
36 Banaías, filho de Jojada, respondeu ao rei: Assim seja; assim queira ordenar o Senhor, o Deus de meu senhor e rei!	36 Benaiah son of Jehoiada answered the king. 'Amen!' he said. 'And may Yahweh, God of my lord theking, confirm it!
37 Esteja ele com Salomão assim como esteve com o rei, meu senhor, e eleve o seu trono ainda acima do trono de meu senhor o rei Davi!	37 As Yahweh has been with my lord the king, so may he be with Solomon and make his throne evengreater than the throne of my lord King David!'
38 O sacerdote Sadoc desceu com o profeta Natã, Banaías, filho de Jojada, os cereteus e os feleteus; fizeram montar Salomão na mula de Davi e conduziram-no a Gião.	38 Zadok the priest, the prophet Nathan, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and Pelethitesthen went down; they mounted Solomon on King David's mule and escorted him to Gihon.
39 Tomou o sacerdote Sadoc no tabernáculo o chifre de óleo e ungiu com ele Salomão. A trombeta soou e todo o povo pôs-se a gritar: Viva o rei Salomão!	39 Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the Tent and anointed Solomon. They sounded the trumpetand all the people shouted, 'Long live King Solomon!'
40 Depois toda a gente voltou atrás dele, tocando flauta e fazendo grandes festas, de modo que a terra vibrava com suas aclamações.	40 The people al escorted him back, with pipes playing and loud rejoicing and shouts to split the earth.
41 Adonias e seus convivas, tendo terminado o seu banquete, ouviram aquela algazarra. Joab, ouvindo soar a trombeta, disse: Por que esse barulho de cidade alvoroçada?	41 Adonijah and his guests, who had by then finished their meal, al heard the noise. Joab too heard thesound of the trumpet and said, 'What is that noise of uproar in the city?'
42 Falava ainda, quando sobreveio Jônatas, filho do sacerdote Abiatar. Adonias disse-lhe: Vem: tu és um homem valente e trazes certamente boas notícias.	42 While he was stil speaking, Jonathan son of Abiathar the priest arrived. 'Come in,' Adonijah said, 'youare an honest man, so you must be bringing good news.'
43 Sim, respondeu Jônatas; é verdade que o rei Davi, meu senhor, proclamou rei a Salomão.	43 'The truth is,' Jonathan answered, 'our lord King David has made Solomon king.
44 Enviou com ele o sacerdote Sadoc, o profeta Natã, Banaías, filho de Jojada, os cereteus e os feleteus e estes fizeram-no montar na mula do rei.	44 With him, the king sent Zadok the priest, the prophet Nathan, Benaiah son of Jehoiada and theCherethites and Pelethites; they mounted him on the king's mule,
45 O sacerdote Sadoc e o profeta Natã ungiram-no rei em Gião. Dali voltaram cheios de alegria, e a cidade está em alvoroço: essa é a algazarra que ouviste.	45 and Zadok the priest and the prophet Nathan have anointed him king at Gihon; and they have goneback again with shouts of joy and the city is now in an uproar; that was the noise you heard.
46 E Salomão até já está sentado no trono do reino.	46 What is more, Solomon is seated on the royal throne.
47 Além disso, os servos do rei foram felicitar o rei Davi, meu senhor, dizendo: Que o teu Deus torne o nome de Salomão maior que o teu, e eleve o seu trono ainda acima do teu! O rei prostrou-se então sobre o seu leito e disse:	47 And further, the king's officers have been to congratulate our lord King David with the words, "May yourGod make the name of Solomon more glorious than yours, and his throne more exalted than your own!" And theking bowed down on his bed,
48 Bendito seja o Senhor, Deus de Israel, que hoje pôs sobre o meu trono um sucessor, vendo-o eu com os meus próprios olhos!	48 and then said, "Blessed be Yahweh, God of Israel, for setting one of my own sons on the throne while Iam stil alive to see it!" '
49 Os convidados de Adonias, aterrorizados, levantaram-se e foram cada um para o seu lado.	49 At this, all Adonijah's guests, taking fright, got up and made off in their several directions.
50 Adonias, temendo Salomão, levantou-se também e foi abraçar-se com os cornos do altar.	50 Adonijah, in terror of Solomon, got up and ran off to cling to the horns of the altar.
51 Disseram-no a Salomão, nestes termos: Eis que Adonias, temendo o rei Salomão, foi abraçar-se com os cornos do altar, dizendo: Jure-me hoje o rei Salomão que ele não fará morrer o seu servo à espada!	51 Solomon was told, 'You should know that Adonijah is terrified of King Solomon and is now clinging tothe horns of the altar, saying, "Let King Solomon first swear to me that he will not have his servant executed." '
52 Se ele se mostrar um homem valente, respondeu Salomão, não lhe cairá por terra um só de seus cabelos; mas se nele se encontrar maldade, morrerá.	52 'Should he bear himself honourably,' Solomon answered, 'not one hair of his shal fal to the ground;but if he proves difficult, he shal die.'
53 O rei Salomão mandou mensageiros, e o fizeram descer do altar. Ele veio e prostrou-se diante do rei, que lhe disse: Volta para a tua casa.	53 King Solomon then sent for him to be brought down from the altar; he came and threw himselfprostrate before King Solomon; Solomon said to him, 'Go to your house.'
