II Livro de Samuel 2

SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Depois disso, Davi consultou o Senhor: Devo subir a alguma das cidades de Judá?, perguntou ele. Vai, respondeu o Senhor. Davi retomou: Aonde irei? A Hebron.	1 After this David consulted Yahweh, asking, 'Shal I go up to one of the towns of Judah?' Yahwehreplied, 'Go up!' 'Which one shal I go to?' David asked. 'To Hebron,' was the reply.
2 Davi subiu a Hebron com suas duas mulheres, Aquinoã de Jezrael e Abigail, viúva de Nabal, de Carmelo.	2 So David went up, with his two wives Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail widow of Nabal of Carmel.
3 Levou também Davi os homens de sua tropa com suas famílias, e fixaram-se nas cidades de Hebron.	3 In addition David brought up the men who were with him, each with his family, and they settled in thetowns of Hebron.
4 Os homens de Judá foram ali e sagraram Davi rei da casa de Judá. Foi anunciado ao rei que os homens de Jabes em Galaad haviam sepultado Saul.	4 The men of Judah came, and there they anointed David as king of the House of Judah. They told Davidthat the people of Jabesh in Gilead had given Saul burial,
5 Davi mandou-lhes mensageiros, dizendo: Benditos sejais pelo Senhor, por terdes feito esta obra de misericórdia para com o vosso senhor Saul, sepultando-o!	5 so David sent messengers to the people of Jabesh in Gilead. 'May you be blessed by Yahweh,' he said,'for showing this faithful love to Saul your lord, and for burying him.
6 Que o Senhor, por sua vez, se mostre bom e fiel para convosco; e eu também vos beneficiarei por essa ação que fizestes.	6 And now may Yahweh show faithful love and constancy towards you! I too shall treat you wel becauseyou have done this.
7 Coragem! Sede homens valentes! Vosso senhor Saul morreu, e a casa de Judá me ungiu por seu rei.	7 And now take courage and be men of valour. Saul your lord is dead, but the House of Judah hasanointed me to be their king.'
8 Entretanto, Abner, filho de Ner, chefe do exército de Saul, tomou Isboset, filho de Saul, e levou-o a Maanaim,	8 Abner son of Ner, Saul's army commander, had taken Ishbaal son of Saul and brought him over toMahanaim.
9 onde o declarou rei sobre Galaad, sobre os assuritas, sobre Jezrael, Efraim, Benjamim e sobre todo o Israel.	9 He had made him king of Gilead, of the Asherites, of Jezreel, of Ephraim, of Benjamin and indeed of allIsrael.
10 Isboset, filho de Saul, tinha quarenta anos quando se tornou rei de Israel, e reinou dois anos. Só a casa de Judá seguiu Davi.	10 Ishbaal son of Saul was forty years old when he became king of Israel, and he reigned for two years.Only the House of Judah supported David.
11 Sete anos e meio reinou Davi sobre a casa de Judá em Hebron.	11 The length of David's reign over Judah in Hebron was seven years and six months.
12 Abner, filho de Ner, e os homens de Isboset, filho de Saul, saíram de Maanaim para Gabaon.	12 Abner son of Ner, with the retainers of Ishbaal son of Saul, marched out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.
13 Joab, filho de Sarvia, e a gente de Davi, puseram-se também em marcha e encontraram-nos perto da piscina de Gabaon, acampando uns de um lado da piscina e outros de outro.	13 Joab son of Zeruiah, with David's retainers, also took the field, encountering them at the pool ofGibeon. There they halted, one party on one side of the pool, and the other opposite.
14 Abner disse a Joab: Aproximem-se os jovens para lutar em nossa presença. Vamos!, respondeu Joab.	14 Abner then said to Joab, 'Let the men come forward and fight it out between us!' Joab replied, 'Letthem come forward.'
15 Apresentaram-se, pois, doze homens de Benjamim, da parte de Isboset, filho de Saul, e doze da gente de Davi.	15 So they came forward and were numbered off, twelve from Benjamin for Ishbaal son of Saul, andtwelve of David's retainers.
16 Tomando cada um a cabeça do seu adversário, mergulhou-lhe a espada no flanco, de tal modo que caíram ambos ao mesmo tempo. Deu-se a esse lugar o nome Helcat Hassurim, em Gabaon.	16 Each caught his opponent by the head and drove his sword into his side; and thus they al felltogether. Hence the place was cal ed the Field of Sides; it is at Gibeon.
17 Travou-se rude batalha naquele dia, tendo Abner e os homens de Israel cedido diante dos homens de Davi.	17 That day a very fierce battle took place, and Abner and the men of Israel were beaten by David'sretainers.
18 Estavam ali os três filhos de Sarvia: Joab, Abisaí e Asael. Asael tinha os pés ligeiros como uma gazela selvagem.	18 The three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Now Asahel could run like a wildgazel e.
19 Pôs-se a perseguir Abner, sem se desviar nem para a direita, nem para a esquerda.	19 Asahel chased Abner, not swerving to the right or left from pursuing him.
20 És tu, Asael?, disse-lhe Abner, voltando-se. Sim.	20 Abner turned and said, 'Asahel, is that you?' He replied, 'It is.'
21 Volta-te à direita ou à esquerda, ataca um desses homens e leva-lhe os despojos. Mas Asael não quis deixá-lo.	21 Abner said, 'Turn to your right or your left, catch one of the men and take his spoil!' But Asahel wouldnot break off the pursuit.
22 Abner disse-lhe novamente: Deixa-me. Queres que eu te fira e te deite por terra? Como poderia eu depois aparecer diante do teu irmão Joab?	22 Again Abner spoke to Asahel, 'Stop following me, unless you want me to strike you to the ground; andthen how could I look your brother Joab in the face?'
23 Mas como ele se recusasse a abandoná-lo, Abner feriu-o no ventre com a ponta de sua lança. A lança saiu-lhe pelas costas e Asael caiu, morrendo ali mesmo. Todos os que chegavam ao lugar onde ele jazia morto se detinham.	23 But he refused to be diverted, so Abner struck him in the belly with the butt of his spear so that theshaft came out through his back; and he fell at his feet and died on the spot. On coming to the place whereAsahel had fal en and died, everyone halted.
24 Joab e Abisaí continuaram a perseguir Abner; o sol se punha quando chegaram à colina de Ama, a oriente de Giac, no caminho para o deserto de Gabaon.	24 Joab and Abishai took up the pursuit of Abner and at sunset reached the Hil of Ammah, which is tothe east of Giah on the road through the desert of Gibeon.
25 Então os benjaminitas, que se tinham ajuntado atrás de Abner, formaram-se numa tropa e fizeram alto no cimo de uma colina.	25 The Benjaminites gathered in close formation behind Abner and halted on the top of a hil .
26 Abner chamou Joab e disse-lhe: Não cessará a espada de devorar? Não sabes porventura que isso acabará mal? Que esperas para ordenar a esses homens que cessem de perseguir seus irmãos?	26 Abner cal ed out to Joab, 'Is the sword to go on devouring for ever? Surely you see that this can onlyend in bitterness? How long wil it be before you order those people to stop pursuing their brothers?'
27 Joab respondeu: Pela vida de Deus! Se nada tivesses dito, esses homens não teriam cessado de perseguir seus irmãos antes de amanhã.	27 Joab replied, 'As Yahweh lives, if you had not spoken, these men would not have given up the pursuitof their brothers until morning.'
28 Joab tocou a trombeta; a tropa cessou de perseguir os israelitas, e o combate terminou.	28 Joab then sounded the trumpet and all the troops halted; they pursued Israel no further and fought nomore.
29 Abner e sua gente caminharam toda a noite na planície; passaram o Jordão, seguiram todo o desfiladeiro e atingiram Maanaim.	29 Al that night Abner and his men made their way through the Arabah; they crossed the Jordan and,marching throughout the morning, came to Mahanaim.
30 Joab, tendo cessado a perseguição, juntou todo o seu povo: faltavam dezenove homens da gente de Davi, sem contar Asael.	30 Joab, having stopped pursuing Abner, mustered the whole contingent; David's retainers had lostnineteen men in addition to Asahel,
31 Mas os homens de Davi tinham matado trezentos e sessenta homens entre os benjaminitas e os de Abner.	31 but had killed three hundred and sixty of Benjamin, Abner's men.
32 Levaram Asael e sepultaram-no no túmulo de seu pai, em Belém. Joab e seus homens caminharam durante toda a noite; chegaram a Hebron ao despontar da aurora.	32 They took up Asahel and buried him in his father's tomb, which is at Bethlehem. Joab and his menthen marched throughout the night, reaching Hebron at daybreak.
