SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Aconteceu, depois disso, que Amnon, filho de Davi, se enamorou de Tamar, irmã de Absalão, filho de Davi, que era muito bela.	1 After this, the fol owing events took place. Absalom son of David had a beautiful sister whose namewas Tamar; Amnon son of David fel in love with her.
2 Amnon se consumia de tal modo por Tamar, sua irmã, a ponto de ficar doente, pois ela era virgem e parecia-lhe impossível fazer-lhe o que quer que fosse.	2 Amnon was so obsessed with his sister Tamar that it made him il , since she was a virgin and Amnonthought it impossible to do anything to her.
3 Ora, Amnon tinha um amigo chamado Jonadab, filho de Semaa, irmão de Davi, o qual era muito sagaz.	3 But Amnon had a friend called Jonadab son of Shimeah, David's brother, and Jonadab was a veryshrewd man.
4 Disse ele a Amnon: Por que, ó príncipe, estás tão abatido todas as manhãs? Não mo queres dizer? É que amo Tamar, respondeu Amnon, a irmã de meu irmão Absalão.	4 'Son of the king,' he said, 'tel me why, morning after morning, you look so worn? Won't you tel me?'Amnon replied, 'I am in love with Tamar, my brother Absalom's sister.'
5 Jonadab disse-lhe: Deita em tua cama, e finge-te doente. Quando o teu pai vier ver-te, tu lhe dirás: Permite que Tamar venha dar-me de comer, preparando a comida diante de mim, a fim de que eu coma iguarias preparadas por sua mão.	5 Then Jonadab said, 'Take to your bed, pretend to be ill and, when your father comes to visit you, say,"Please let my sister Tamar come and give me something to eat; let her prepare the food where I can see. Whatshe gives me I shal eat." '
6 Amnon deitou-se e fingiu que estava enfermo. Quando o rei veio visitá-lo, ele disse-lhe: Peço-te que minha irmã Tamar venha preparar à minha vista dois pasteizinhos, para que eu coma de sua mão.	6 So Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill. The king then came to visit him and Amnon said to theking, 'Please let my sister Tamar come and make a cake or two where I can watch. What she gives me, I shaleat.'
7 Davi mandou dizer a Tamar, no palácio: Vai à casa de teu irmão Amnon e prepara-lhe sua refeição.	7 David then sent word to Tamar at the palace, 'Go to your brother Amnon's house and prepare somefood for him.'
8 Tamar foi ter com o seu irmão Amnon, que estava deitado. Tomou farinha, amassou e fez os pastéis à sua vista.	8 Tamar went to the house of her brother Amnon who was lying there in bed. She took dough andkneaded it, and she made some cakes while he watched, and baked the cakes.
9 Depois de tê-los cozido, tomou a panela e despejou-a diante dele, mas Amnon não quis comer, e disse: Manda sair todos daqui. E retiraram-se todos os que estavam junto dele,	9 She then took the pan and dished them up in front of him, but he refused to eat. Amnon said, 'Leteveryone leave me!' So everyone withdrew.
10 Amnon disse então a Tamar: Traze o prato no meu quarto, para que eu coma de tua mão. Tamar tomou os pastéis que fizera e levou-os ao seu irmão no quarto.	10 Amnon then said to Tamar, 'Bring the food to the inner room, so that I can eat what you give me.' SoTamar took the cakes which she had made and brought them to her brother Amnon in the inner room.
11 E quando ela os oferecia a Amnon para que comesse, este segurou-a, dizendo: Vem, deita-te comigo, minha irmã!	11 And as she was offering the food to him, he caught hold of her and said, 'Come to bed with me,sister!'
12 Não, meu irmão, disse-lhe ela; não me violentes. Não se faz uma tal coisa em Israel. Não cometas semelhante infâmia.	12 She replied, 'No, brother! Do not force me! This is no way to behave in Israel. Do not do anything sodisgraceful!
13 Aonde levaria eu o meu opróbrio? E tu serias olhado como um ímpio em Israel! É melhor que fales ao rei: ele não recusará dar-me a ti.	13 Wherever should I go? I should be marked with this shame, while you would become disgraced inIsrael. Why not go and speak to the king? He wil not refuse to give me to you.'
14 Mas ele não quis dar-lhe ouvidos e, como era mais forte que ela, violentou-a e se deitou com ela.	14 But he would not listen to her; he overpowered her and raped her.
15 E logo a seguir Amnon concebeu uma profunda aversão por ela, mais violenta do que o amor que antes lhe tivera. Levanta-te, disse-lhe ele, e vai-te!	15 Amnon was then seized with extreme hatred for her; the hatred he now felt for her was greater thanhis earlier love. 'Get up and go!' he said.
16 Não, meu irmão, respondeu ela; o ultraje que me farias, expulsando-me, seria ainda mais grave do que o que me acabas de fazer. Ele, porém, não quis ouvi-la;	16 She said, 'No, brother! To send me away would be worse than the other wrong you have done me!'But he would not listen to her.
17 chamou o seu servo e disse-lhe: Põe fora daqui esta moça que me está importunando, e fecha a porta atrás dela.	17 He cal ed his personal servant. 'Rid me of this woman!' he said. 'Throw her out and bolt the doorbehind her!'
18 {Ela trazia um vestido comprido, como se vestiam outrora as donzelas filhas do rei.} O servo expulsou-a, fechando a porta atrás dela.	18 (She was wearing a magnificent dress, for this was what the king's unmarried daughters wore indays gone by.) So the servant put her out and bolted the door behind her.
19 Tamar derramou então cinza sobre a cabeça, rasgou o seu longo vestido e, pondo a mão sobre a cabeça, afastou-se gritando.	19 Tamar put dust on her head, tore the magnificent dress which she was wearing, laid her hand on herhead, and went away, crying aloud as she went.
20 Seu irmão Absalão disse-lhe: Esteve realmente contigo Amnon, teu irmão? Por agora, cala-te, minha irmã; ele é teu irmão: não penses mais nisso. E Tamar permaneceu consternada, na casa de seu irmão Absalão.	20 Her brother Absalom said to her, 'Has Amnon your brother been with you? Sister, be quiet; he is yourbrother; do not take the matter to heart!' Tamar, however, went back to her brother Absalom's houseinconsolable.
21 O rei Davi soube de tudo o que se tinha passado, e inflamou-se com violência a sua cólera, mas não quis afligir seu filho Amnon, pois o amava por ser o seu primogênito.	21 When King David heard the whole story, he was very angry; but he had no wish to harm his sonAmnon, whom he loved because he was his first-born.
22 Quanto a Absalão, este não disse a Amnon uma só palavra, nem boa nem má, porque o odiava, por ter ele violado sua irmã Tamar.	22 Absalom, however, would not so much as speak to Amnon, since he hated Amnon for having rapedhis sister Tamar.
23 Passados dois anos, Absalão tosquiava suas ovelhas em Baal Hasor, perto de Efraim, e convidou todos os filhos do rei.	23 Two years later, when Absalom had the sheep-shearers at Baal-Hazor, which is near Ephraim, heinvited al the king's sons.
24 Veio ter com o rei e disse-lhe: Eis que se tosquiam as ovelhas de teu servo; venha, pois, o rei com os seus familiares à casa do teu servo.	24 Absalom went to the king and said, 'Now sir, your servant has the sheep-shearers. Wil the king andhis retinue be pleased to come with your servant?'
25 O rei disse-lhe: Não, meu filho, não iremos todos, para não te sermos pesados. Malgrado instâncias de Absalão, o rei não quis ir, e o abençoou.	25 'No, my son,' the king replied, 'we must not al come and be a burden to you.' And though Absalomwas insistent, he would not go but dismissed him.
26 Absalão replicou: Se tu não vens, deixa ao menos que venha conosco o meu irmão Amnon. Por que, disse Davi, iria ele contigo?	26 Absalom persisted, 'Then at least let my brother Amnon come with us.' The king said, 'Why should hego with you?'
27 Mas Absalão tanto insistiu que Davi deixou partir com ele Amnon e todos os filhos do rei. E Absalão organizou um banquete real.	27 On Absalom's insistence, however, he let Amnon and al the king's sons to go with him. Absalomprepared a royal banquet
28 Ora, Absalão dera aos seus criados a ordem seguinte: Ouvi! Quando Amnon tiver o coração alegre por causa do vinho, e eu vos disser: Feri Amnon!, então vós o matareis; não tenhais medo, porque sou eu quem vo-lo ordena. Coragem, e sede homens fortes!	28 and then gave this order to the servants, 'Listen careful y; when Amnon's heart is merry with wineand I say, "Strike Amnon down", then kil him. Don't be afraid. Have I not myself given you the order? Use yourstrength and show your mettle!'
29 Os servos de Absalão fizeram a Amnon conforme o seu senhor lhes ordenara. Então todos os filhos do rei se levantaram, montaram nas suas mulas e fugiram.	29 Absalom's servants treated Amnon as Absalom had ordered. The king's sons al leapt to their feet,mounted their mules and fled.
30 Estavam ainda a caminho, quando chegou ao rei o boato que dizia: Absalão feriu todos os príncipes; nenhum se salvou!	30 While they were on the road, word reached David, 'Absalom has killed all the king's sons; not one ofthem is left.'
31 O rei levantou-se, rasgou suas vestes e prostrou-se por terra; e todos os que o rodeavam rasgaram também as suas vestes.	31 The king stood up, tore his clothes and threw himself on the ground. Al his officers tore their clothestoo.
32 Mas Jonadab, filho de Semaa, irmão de Davi, tomou a palavra: Não pense o rei, meu senhor, que foram assassinados todos os jovens. Só Amnon morreu, porque Absalão decidira matá-lo desde o dia em que ele violou sua irmã Tamar.	32 Jonadab son of Shimeah, David's brother, then spoke up and said, 'Do not let my lord take to heartthe report that al the young men, the king's sons, have been killed, since only Amnon is dead: for Absalom hasbeen promising himself to do this since the day when Amnon raped his sister Tamar.
33 Não acredite o rei, meu senhor, que morreram todos os príncipes. Só Amnon pereceu,	33 So my lord the king must not imagine that al the king's sons are dead; only Amnon is dead
34 e seus outros irmãos estão vivos. Entretanto, Absalão fugira. A sentinela, levantando os olhos, viu uma grande tropa que descia pelo declive do caminho de Horonaim, e veio anunciar ao rei: Vi homens que vinham pelo caminho de Horonaim, no flanco da montanha.	34 and Absalom has fled.' The man on sentry duty looked up and saw a large troop coming along theroad from Bahurim. The sentry came to tell the king, 'I have seen some people coming down the Bahurim roadon the mountainside.'
35 Jonadab disse ao rei: São os príncipes que chegam; é bem como tinha dito o teu servo.	35 Jonadab then said to the king, 'These are the king's sons arriving: what your servant said is exactlywhat happened.'
36 Falava ele ainda, quando entraram os filhos do rei e puseram-se a chorar. Então o rei e todos os seus derramaram abundantes lágrimas.	36 He had scarcely finished speaking when the king's sons arrived and wept aloud; the king and al hisretinue wept aloud too.
37 Quanto a Absalão, fugira para junto de Tolomai, filho de Amiud, rei de Gessur.	37 Absalom had gone to Talmai son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. The king mourned for his son everyday.
38 Enquanto isso, Davi continuava de luto pelo filho. E Absalão permaneceu três anos em Gessur, para onde fugira.	38 When Absalom had gone to Geshur, he stayed there for three years.
39 O ânimo do rei cessou de irritar-se contra Absalão, tendo-se consolado da perda de Amnon.	39 Once the king was consoled over Amnon's death, his anger against Absalom subsided.
