Giosuè 9

BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 - Quando vennero a cognizione di questi avvenimenti i re tutti al di qua del Giordano, che abitavano fra le montagne, nelle pianure e sulla spiaggia del Gran Mare, come pure quelli che abitavano presso il Libano, l'Eteo, l'Amorreo, il Cananeo, il Ferezeo, l'Eveo ed il Jebuseo,	1 Hearing these things, al the kings on this side of the Jordan, in the highlands and in the lowlands, allalong the coast of the Great Sea towards the Lebanon, Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites andJebusites, with one consent
2 si riunirono tutti per combattere contro Giosuè ed Israele con una sola volontà e un solo pensiero.	2 formed a fighting al iance against Joshua and Israel.
3 Ma gli abitanti di Gabaon all'udire quanto Giosuè aveva fatto contro Gerico e Ai,	3 When the inhabitants of Gibeon learned how Joshua had treated Jericho and Ai, for their part,
4 ebbero l'astuzia di prendere con sè viveri e di caricare sui loro asini vecchi sacchi, con otri di vino logore e ricucite;	4 they had recourse to a ruse. They provided themselves with supplies, and loaded their donkeys with oldsacks and with old wineskins which had burst and been sewn up again.
5 [si misero ai piedi] calzari stravecchi, che in segno di loro vetustà eran tutti rappezzati, indossarono vecchi abiti e portando come viatico pane stantio e ridotto in briciole,	5 They put on patched old sandals and worn-out clothes. The only bread they took with them to eat wasdried up and crumbling.
6 andarono da Giosuè, che allora si trovava nell'accampamento di Galgala, e dissero a lui e a tutto Israele: «Noi veniamo da un paese lontano desiderosi di stringere alleanza con voi». Gli uomini d'Israele risposero loro:	6 They came to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, and to him and the men of Israel they said, 'We come froma distant country, so make a treaty with us.'
7 «Forse voi abitate nella terra che ci è stata data in sorte e allora non potremo stringere alleanza con voi».	7 The Israelites answered these Hivites, 'For all we know, you may live right among us. How then couldwe make a treaty with you?'
8 Ed essi a Giosuè: «Noi siamo servi tuoi», dissero. Al che Giosuè soggiunse: «Chi siete voi? E donde venite?».	8 They said to Joshua, 'We are your servants.' 'But who are you?' Joshua asked them, 'and where do youcome from?'
9 Ed essi: «Da un paese molto lontano vennero i servi tuoi nel nome del Signore Dio tuo, perchè abbiamo inteso la fama della sua potenza e tutto ciò che fece in Egitto,	9 They said, 'Your servants have come from a country very far away, because of the fame of Yahwehyour God; for we have heard of him and of al that he did in Egypt,
10 e ai due re Amorrei che stavano al di là del Giordano, Seon re di Esebon e Og re di Basan che stava in Astarot.	10 and of al that he did to the two Amorite kings who used to live on the other side of the Jordan: Sihonking of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who used to live at Ashtaroth.
11 Gli anziani e tutti gli abitanti del nostro paese ci dissero: - Prendete con voi cibi per il lungo viaggio, andate loro incontro e dite: "Noi siamo vostri servi; fate alleanza con noi". -	11 Because of which, our elders and al the people of our country said to us, "Take provisions with you forthe journey; go and meet them and say to them: We are your servants; so make a treaty with us."
12 Ecco i pani; quando partimmo dalle nostre case per venire da voi, essi eran caldi e ora son divenuti secchi e ridotti in briciole tanto son vecchi.	12 Here is our bread; it was warm when we took it from home to provide for our journey the day we setout to come to you, and now, you can see, it is dried up and crumbling.
13 Avevamo riempito otri nuove di vino e ora son rotte e perdono; le vesti ed i calzari, di cui vestiamo e che abbiamo ai piedi son logorati e quasi consunti per la gran lunghezza del viaggio».	13 These wineskins were new when we filled them; you can see, they have burst; and these clothes andsandals of ours are worn out from travelling such a long way.'
14 Presero [gli Israeliti] dei loro cibi senza consultare il Signore	14 The leaders sampled some of the food they offered, but they did not ask Yahweh's orders.
15 e Giosuè fece la pace con loro e strinse alleanza promettendo che non li avrebbe uccisi. Lo stesso giuramento fecero i principi del popolo.	15 Joshua made peace with them, and struck a treaty with them guaranteeing their lives, and the leadersof the community ratified it by oath.
16 Tre giorni dopo che ebbero stretta l'alleanza intesero che abitavano vicino e che avrebbero vissuto in mezzo a loro.	16 Now it so happened that three days after the treaty had been made, it became known that they were aneighbouring people, living in Israel's region.
17 Levarono l'accampamento i figli d'Israele e al terzo giorno vennero alle loro città, chiamate Gabaon, Cafira, Berot e Cariatiarim,	17 The Israelites set out from camp, arriving in their towns three days later. Their towns were Gibeon,Chephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath-Jearim.
18 ma non li uccisero, perchè i principi del popolo lo avevan giurato nel nome del Signore Dio d'Israele. Perciò tutta la moltitudine mormorò contro i principi,	18 The Israelites did not attack them, since the leaders of the community had sworn to them by Yahweh,God of Israel, but the whole community muttered against the leaders.
19 i quali risposero: «Noi abbiamo giurato loro in nome del Signore Dio di Israele e perciò non li possiamo uccidere;	19 The leaders, however, al said to the whole community, 'Since we have sworn an oath to them byYahweh, God of Israel, we cannot touch them now.
20 ma li tratteremo così: Li lasceremo in vita per non attirare sopra di noi l'ira del Signore, qualora fossimo spergiuri;	20 This is what we shal do with them: let them live, rather than bring retribution down on ourselves onaccount of the oath which we have sworn to them.'
21 ma vivranno in modo da essere utili a tutta la massa del popolo tagliando la legna e portando l'acqua». Avendo essi detto ciò,	21 And the leaders went on, 'Let them live, but let them be wood-cutters and water-carriers for the wholecommunity.' Thus spoke the leaders.
22 Giosuè fece chiamare i Gabaoniti e disse loro: «Perchè avete voluto ingannarci ricorrendo alla frode col dire: - Abitiamo lontano da voi, - mentre state in mezzo a noi?	22 Joshua sent for the Gibeonites and asked them, 'Why did you deceive us by saying, "We live very faraway," when in fact you live right among us?
23 Perciò voi resterete sotto la maledizione e non mancherà mai fra i vostri discendenti chi taglierà la legna e porterà l'acqua nella casa del mio Dio».	23 From now on, you are accursed and wil for ever be serfs, as wood-cutters and water-carriers in thehouse of my God.'
24 Al che essi risposero: «A noi, tuoi servi, fu detto che il Signore Dio tuo avea promesso a Mosè suo servo di dare in vostro potere tutto il paese e disperdere tutti gli abitanti; perciò abbiamo avuto tanto timore e mossi dalla paura di voi abbiamo provveduto alla nostra vita adottando un tal piano.	24 Their answer to Joshua was, 'We did it because your servants had been rightly told that Yahweh yourGod had ordered his servant Moses to give you the whole of this country and destroy al its inhabitants beforeyou; also because, as you advanced on us, we feared very greatly for our lives. That was why we did this.
25 Ora siamo nelle tue mani; fa' di noi quello che ti sembra buono e giusto».	25 Now, as you see, we are at your mercy; do to us whatever you think good and right.'
26 Giosuè fece come aveva detto e li liberò dalle mani dei figli d'Israele, perchè non fossero uccisi	26 What he did with them was this: he saved them from the hand of the Israelites, who did not kil them.
27 e in quello stesso giorno decretò che fossero addetti al servizio di tutto il popolo e dell'altare del Signore col tagliar la legna e col portare fino ai nostri giorni l'acqua nel luogo che il Signore si sarebbe eletto.	27 But that very day Joshua made them wood-cutters and water-carriers for the community and for thealtar of Yahweh, at the place which he would eventual y choose; and so they are today.
