1 - Ma Giobbe rispose e disse:	1 And Job answered, and said:
2 «Veramente io so che è così, e che l'uomo non può giustificarsi in confronto con Dio;	2 Indeed I know it is so, and that man cannot be justified compared with
3 se egli volesse contender con lui, non potrebbe rispondergli una volta su mille.	3 If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one for a thousand.
4 Sapiente di cuore e gagliardo di forza, chi mai resistè contro lui e rimase tranquillo?	4 He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath resisted him, and hath had peace ?
5 Sposta egli i monti e non se n'avvedono, e li sconvolge nel furore suo:	5 Who hath removed mountains, and they whom he overthrew in his wrath, knew it not.
6 fa traballar la terra dal suo sito, e le colonne di lei ne sono scosse:	6 Who shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.
7 dà un comando al sole ed esso non spunta, e tien racchiuse le stelle quasi sotto un suggello:	7 Who commandeth tile sun and it riseth not: and shutteth up the stars as it were under a seal:
8 i cieli egli stende da solo, incede sopra i flutti del mare:	8 Who alone spreadeth out the heavens, and walketh upon the waves of the sea.
9 egli ha creato Arturo ed Orionele Pleiadi e le Costellazioni dell'Austro:	9 Who maketh Arcturus, and Orion, and Hyades, and the inner parts of the south.
10 opera egli cose grandi ed incomprensibili, cose mirabili che non hanno numero.	10 Who doth things great and incomprehensible, and wonderful, of which there is no number.
11 Se egli a me viene, io non lo scorgo, se s'allontana, io non me ne avvedo;	11 If he come to me, I shall not see him: if he depart I shall not understand.
12 se di repente interroga, chi potrà rispondergli, ovver chi potrà dirgli: - Perchè fai così? -	12 If he examine on a sudden, who shall answer him? or who can say: Why dost thou so?
13 Dio, alla cui ira nessuno può resistere, e sotto cui si curvano coloro che sostengono l'orbe,	13 God, whose wrath no mall can resist, and under whom they stoop that bear up the world.
14 a costui, che grandezza ho io perchè possa rispondergli, e pronunciar le mie parole avanti a lui?	14 What am I then, that I should answer him, and have words with him?
15 Al quale, ancor che io avessi qualche ragione, non risponderei, ma come a mio giudice chiederei pietà.	15 I, who although I should have any just thing, would not answer, but would make supplication to my judge.
16 E pur se mi rispondesse quand'io lo chiamassi [a giudizio], non avrei fiducia che ascolterebbe la mia voce:	16 And if he should hear me when I call, I should not believe that he had heard my voice.
17 egli invero nella procella mi sfracellerebbe, moltiplicherebbe le mie ferite pur senza ragione.	17 For he shall crush me in a whirlwind, and multiply my wounds even without cause.
18 Egli non concede al mio spirito di riposarsi, e mi riempie d'amarezze.	18 He alloweth not my spirit to rest, and he filleth me with bitterness.
19 Se si tratta di vigoria, - egli è il fortissimo, se dell'equità di giudizio - nessuno ardirà testimoniare per me.	19 If strength be demanded, he is most strong: if equity of judgment, no man dare bear witness for me.
20 Se mi vorrò giustificare, la mia stessa bocca mi condannerà, se mostrarmi innocente, mi convincerà perverso.	20 If I would justify myself, my own mouth shall condemn me: if I would shew myself innocent, he shall prove me wicked.
21 Quand'anche io sia perfetto, ciò stesso l'anima mia l'ignorerà, e avrò a disdegno la mia vita.	21 Although I should be simple, even this my soul shall be ignorant of, and I shall be weary of my life.
22 Questo solo è ciò ch'io ho detto:Sia l'innocente che l'empio è Lui che li distrugge.	22 One thing there is that I have spoken, both the innocent and the wicked he consumeth.
23 Se egli flagella, dia la morte all'istante, e delle pene degli innocenti non s'allieti.	23 If he scourge, let him kill at once, and not laugh at the pains of the innocent.
24 La terra è consegnata in mano al malvagio, il volto dei giudici d'essa egli benda; se non è Lui [che fa ciò], chi è dunque?	24 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked, he covereth the face of the judges thereof: and if it be not he, who is it then?
25 E i miei dì furon veloci più che un corriere, fuggiron via e non videro il bene;	25 My days have been swifter than a post: they have fled away and have not seen good.
26 trascorsero oltre come vascelli di canna, come l'aquila che piomba sulla preda!	26 They have passed by as ships carrying fruits, as an eagle flying to the prey.
27 Se io esclamo: - Non voglio parlar più così! -mi stravolge il viso e mi strazia il dolore.	27 If I say: I will not speak so: I change my face, and am tormented with sorrow.
28 Io temevo di tutte le mie azioni, sapendo che tu non perdoni a chi manca;	28 I feared all my works, knowing that thou didst not spare the offender.
29 chè se pur in tal modo io risulto empio, perchè dovrei travagliarmi senza vantaggio?	29 But if so also I am wicked, why have I laboured in vain?
30 Se io mi lavassi con acqua di neve, e le mie mani risplendessero per mondezza,	30 If I be washed as it were with snow waters, and my hands shall shine ever so clean :
31 nella lordura tu m'intingeresti, sì che m'avessero a schifo i miei stessi abiti.	31 Yet thou shalt plunge me in filth, and my garments shall abhor me,
32 Egli invero non è un uomo al pari di me, perchè io gli risponda, nè è tale che in giudizio come me possa ascoltarsi;	32 For I shall not answer a man that is like myself: nor one that may be heard with me equally in judgment.
33 non c'è chi possa far da arbitro fra me e lui, e stender la mano su ambedue.	33 There is none that may be able to reprove both, and to put his hand between both.
34 Ritiri egli da sopra a me il suo flagello, e il suo timore non mi sbigottisca:	34 Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me.
35 [a tal condizione] parlerei, senza temerlo, poichè intimorito io non posso rispondere.	35 I will speak, and will not fear him: for I cannot answer while I am in fear.
