| 3 S'accosciano esse sul feto per partorire, ed emettono gemiti: | 3 when they crouch, bring forth their offspring, and are delivered of their young? |
| 4 si separano da esse i loro nati e vanno alla pastura, s'allontanano nè ad esse ritornano. | 4 Their young ones become strong, they grow up in the open; they go forth, and do not return to them. |
| 5 Chi ha mandato libero l'onagro, e i suoi legami chi li ha sciolti? | 5 "Who has let the wild ass go free? Who has loosed the bonds of the swift ass, |
| 6 Ad esso io diedi il deserto quale casae qual sua dimora la terra di salsuggine. | 6 to whom I have given the steppe for his home, and the salt land for his dwelling place? |
| 7 Disprezza egli il tumulto della città, e urla di mandriano non ascolta; | 7 He scorns the tumult of the city; he hears not the shouts of the driver. |
| 8 visita torno torno i monti del suo pascolo, e ogni verde zolla egli ricerca. | 8 He ranges the mountains as his pasture, and he searches after every green thing. |
| 9 Vorrà forse servirti il rinoceronte, ovvero starsene alla tua mangiatoia? | 9 "Is the wild ox willing to serve you? Will he spend the night at your crib? |
| 10 Legherai tu forse il rinoceronte col tuo giogo all'aratro, ovvero erpicherà esso le zolle delle valli dietro a te? | 10 Can you bind him in the furrow with ropes, or will he harrow the valleys after you? |
| 11 Faresti forse assegnamento sulla grande sua forza, e affideresti a lui i tuoi proventi [agricoli]? | 11 Will you depend on him because his strength is great, and will you leave to him your labor? |
| 12 Spereresti forse ch'esso [trebbiando] ti renda la tua sementa, radunandola sulla tua aia? | 12 Do you have faith in him that he will return, and bring your grain to your threshing floor? |
| 13 La penna dello struzzo è forse simile alle penne della cicogna e dello sparviere? | 13 "The wings of the ostrich wave proudly; but are they the pinions and plumage of love? |
| 14 Quando esso abbandona le sue uova in terra, le scaldi forse tu nella polvere? | 14 For she leaves her eggs to the earth, and lets them be warmed on the ground, |
| 15 Esso si scorda che un piede le può calpestare, e le fiere del campo le schiacciano. | 15 forgetting that a foot may crush them, and that the wild beast may trample them. |
| 16 È crudele verso i suoi figli, come non fossero suoi, sperde le sue fatiche senza che vi sia alcuna minaccia. | 16 She deals cruelly with her young, as if they were not hers; though her labor be in vain, yet she has no fear; |
| 17 Dio infatti l'ha privato di sapienza, nè gli ha impartito intelligenza; | 17 because God has made her forget wisdom, and given her no share in understanding. |
| 18 tuttavia, quando è tempo, stende in alto le ali, si burla del cavallo e del suo cavaliere. | 18 When she rouses herself to flee, she laughs at the horse and his rider. |
| 19 Dai forse al cavallo vigoria, o nel suo collo immetti tu il nitrito? | 19 "Do you give the horse his might? Do you clothe his neck with strength? |
| 20 Lo fai forse saltare come una cavalletta, nella magnificenza del suo sbuffare terribile? | 20 Do you make him leap like the locust? His majestic snorting is terrible. |
| 21 L'unghia sua scava la terra, ed esulta, con violenza scagliasi incontro agli armati; | 21 He paws in the valley, and exults in his strength; he goes out to meet the weapons. |
| 22 disprezza esso il timore, non la cede di fronte alla spada. | 22 He laughs at fear, and is not dismayed; he does not turn back from the sword. |
| 23 Addosso a lui tintinna la faretra, vibrano la lancia e lo scudo. | 23 Upon him rattle the quiver, the flashing spear and the javelin. |
| 24 Spumante e fremente divora la terra, nè si tien fermo allo squillar di tromba. | 24 With fierceness and rage he swallows the ground; he cannot stand still at the sound of the trumpet. |
| 25 Udendo la tromba esclama: - Ih! Ih! -fiuta da lungi la battagliale grida dei condottieri e il clamor dell'esercito. | 25 When the trumpet sounds, he says 'Aha!' He smells the battle from afar, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting. |
| 26 Forse per tua bravura si veste di piume lo sparviere, ed espande l'ali sue verso il mezzogiorno? | 26 "Is it by your wisdom that the hawk soars, and spreads his wings toward the south? |
| 27 Forse per tuo comando si leva in alto l'aquila, e in luoghi eccelsi pone il suo nido? | 27 Is it at your command that the eagle mounts up and makes his nest on high? |
| 28 Sulle rupi essa abita, e dimorasu scoscese rocce e inaccessibili gioghi: | 28 On the rock he dwells and makes his home in the fastness of the rocky crag. |
| 29 di là essa scruta la preda, da lungi i suoi occhi esplorano. | 29 Thence he spies out the prey; his eyes behold it afar off. |
| 30 I suoi piccoli lambiscono sangue, e ovunque sia un cadavere, subito essa ritrovasi.» | 30 His young ones suck up blood; and where the slain are, there is he." |
| 31 E soggiungendo il Signore, disse a Giobbe: | |
| 32 «Chi vuol contendere con Dio, s'acquieta forse così facilmente? eppur chi fa riprensioni a Dio, gli deve rispondere.» | |
| 33 Rispose allora Giobbe al Signore e disse: | |
| 34 «Ho parlato con leggerezza; che cosa potrei io rispondere? la mia mano sulla mia bocca io pongo. | |
| 35 Ho parlato una prima volta, e vorrei non aver parlato: e poi una seconda, ma non replicherò più.» | |
