| 1 - Venne via adunque Abramo dall'Egitto, egli e la moglie, tutto quel che aveva, e Lot con lui, diretto a mezzodì. | 1 So Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the Negeb. |
| 2 Era molto ricco in possessi, in oro ed argento. | 2 Now Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold. |
| 3 Ritornò per la via per la quale era venuto, dal mezzodì a Betel, sino al luogo dove aveva prima fermato le tende, fra Betel e Hai, | 3 And he journeyed on from the Negeb as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai, |
| 4 ed aveva già prima alzato un altare; quivi [un'altra volta] invocò il nome del Signore. | 4 to the place where he had made an altar at the first; and there Abram called on the name of the LORD. |
| 5 Ma anche Lot, che era con Abramo, aveva greggi di pecore, armenti e tende. | 5 And Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents, |
| 6 Nè la regione poteva contenerli in modo che stessero insieme; erano infatti molti i loro averi, e non potevano vivere insieme. | 6 so that the land could not support both of them dwelling together; for their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together, |
| 7 Tanto che avvenne una rissa tra i pastori del gregge di Abramo, e quelli di Lot. Il Cananeo ed il Ferezeo tenevano allora quella regione. | 7 and there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram's cattle and the herdsmen of Lot's cattle. At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites dwelt in the land. |
| 8 Disse dunque Abramo a Lot: «Di grazia, non vi siano litigi fra me e te, fra i pastori miei ed i tuoi, giacchè siam fratelli. | 8 Then Abram said to Lot, "Let there be no strife between you and me, and between your herdsmen and my herdsmen; for we are kinsmen. |
| 9 Ecco, tu hai innanzi a te tutta questa terra; separati da me, ti prego; se tu andrai a sinistra, terrò io la destra; se tu preferirai la destra, anderò io a sinistra». | 9 Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me. If you take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if you take the right hand, then I will go to the left." |
| 10 Ed alzati gli occhi, Lot vide tutta la pianura intorno al Giordano, la quale, prima che il Signore sprofondasse Sodoma e Gomorra, era tutta irrigata, come il paradiso del Signore, e come l'Egitto per chi viene da Segor. | 10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and saw that the Jordan valley was well watered everywhere like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, in the direction of Zoar; this was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. |
| 11 Lot scelse per sè questa regione attorno al Giordano, e se n'andò verso oriente; e si separarono l'uno dall'altro. | 11 So Lot chose for himself all the Jordan valley, and Lot journeyed east; thus they separated from each other. |
| 12 Abramo abitò nella terra di Canaan; Lot invece dimorò nei villaggi che erano intorno al Giordano, e poi si fermò in Sodoma. | 12 Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, while Lot dwelt among the cities of the valley and moved his tent as far as Sodom. |
| 13 Ora i Sodomiti erano pessimi, peccatori a dismisura innanzi al Signore. | 13 Now the men of Sodom were wicked, great sinners against the LORD. |
| 14 Disse il Signore ad Abramo, dopo che Lot si fu da lui separato: «Alza gli occhi, e, dal luogo ove sei, guarda a settentrione ed a mezzogiorno, ad oriente ed occidente. | 14 The LORD said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, "Lift up your eyes, and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward; |
| 15 Tutta la regione che tu vedi, io la darò a te ed alla tua discendenza, in eterno. | 15 for all the land which you see I will give to you and to your descendants for ever. |
| 16 La tua discendenza sarà come la polvere della terra; se potrà un uomo contare i granellini della polvere della terra, potrà anche contare i tuoi discendenti. | 16 I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth; so that if one can count the dust of the earth, your descendants also can be counted. |
| 17 Levati, e percorri questa regione in lunghezza e larghezza, che io te la darò». | 17 Arise, walk through the length and the breadth of the land, for I will give it to you." |
| 18 Mosse dunque le sue tende, venne Abramo ad abitare nella valle di Mambre, in Hebron, e vi alzò un altare al Signore. | 18 So Abram moved his tent, and came and dwelt by the oaks of Mamre, which are at Hebron; and there he built an altar to the LORD. |
