1 Timothy 5

1 You should not rebuke an old man, but rather plead with him, as if he were your father; with young men, like brothers;	1 Never speak sharply to a man older than yourself, but appeal to him as you would to your own father;treat younger men as brothers,
2 with old women, like mothers; with young women, in all chastity, like sisters.	2 older women as mothers and young women as sisters with al propriety.
3 Honor those widows who are true widows.	3 Be considerate to widows -- if they real y are widowed.
4 But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let her first learn to manage her own household, and to fulfill, in turn, her own obligation to her parents; for this is acceptable before God.	4 If a widow has children or grandchildren, they are to learn first of al to do their duty to their own familiesand repay their debt to their parents, because this is what pleases God.
5 But she who is truly a widow and is destitute, let her hope in God, and let her be urgent in supplications and prayers, night and day.	5 But a woman who is real y widowed and left on her own has set her hope on God and perseveres nightand day in petitions and prayer.
6 For she who is living in pleasures is dead, while living.	6 The one who thinks only of pleasure is already dead while she is stil alive:
7 And give instruction in this, so that they may be beyond reproach.	7 instruct them in this, too, so that their lives may be blameless.
8 But if anyone has no concern for his own, and especially for those of his own household, he has denied the faith, and he is worse than an unbeliever.	8 Anyone who does not look after his own relations, especial y if they are living with him, has rejected thefaith and is worse than an unbeliever.
9 Let a widow be chosen who is no less than sixty years of age, who was the wife of one husband,	9 Enrolment as a widow is permissible only for a woman at least sixty years old who has had only onehusband.
10 who has testimony of her good works: whether she has educated children, or has provided hospitality, or has washed the feet of the saints, or has ministered to those suffering tribulation, or has pursued any kind of good work.	10 She must be a woman known for her good works -- whether she has brought up her children, beenhospitable to strangers and washed the feet of God's holy people, helped people in hardship or been active in allkinds of good work.
11 But avoid the younger widows. For once they have flourished in Christ, they will want to marry,	11 Do not accept young widows because if their natural desires distract them from Christ, they want tomarry again,
12 resulting in damnation, because they have disregarded the primacy of faith.	12 and then people condemn them for being unfaithful to their original promise.
13 And being at the same time also idle, they learn to go from house to house, being not only idle, but also talkative and curious, speaking of things which do not concern them.	13 Besides, they learn how to be idle and go round from house to house; and then, not merely idle, theylearn to be gossips and meddlers in other people's affairs and to say what should remain unsaid.
14 Therefore, I want the younger women to marry, to procreate children, to be mothers of families, to provide no ready opportunity for the adversary to speak evil.	14 I think it is best for young widows to marry again and have children and a household to look after, andnot give the enemy any chance to raise a scandal about them;
15 For certain ones have already been turned back to Satan.	15 there are already some who have turned aside to fol ow Satan.
16 If any among the faithful have widows, let him minister to them and not burden the Church, so that there may be enough for those who are true widows.	16 If a woman believer has widowed relatives, she should support them and not make the Church bear theexpense but enable it to support those who are real y widowed.
17 Let priests who lead well be held worthy of twice the honor, especially those who labor in the Word and in doctrine.	17 Elders who do their work wel while they are in charge earn double reward, especial y those who workhard at preaching and teaching.
18 For Scripture says: “You shall not muzzle an ox as it is treading out the grain,” and, “The worker is worthy of his pay.”	18 As scripture says: You must not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the corn; and again: The workerdeserves his wages.
19 Do not be willing to accept an accusation against a priest, except under two or three witnesses.	19 Never accept any accusation brought against an elder unless it is supported by two or three witnesses.
20 Reprove sinners in the sight of everyone, so that the others may have fear.	20 If anyone is at fault, reprimand him publicly, as a warning to the rest.
21 I testify before God and Christ Jesus and the elect Angels, that you should observe these things without prejudgment, doing nothing which shows favoritism to either side.	21 Before God, and before Jesus Christ and the angels he has chosen, I charge you to keep these rulesimpartial y and never to be influenced by favouritism.
22 You should not be quick to impose hands on anyone, nor should you take part in the sins of outsiders. Keep yourself chaste.	22 Do not be too quick to lay hands on anyone, and never make yourself an accomplice in anybody else'ssin; keep yourself pure.
23 Do not continue to drink only water, but make use of a little wine, for the sake of your stomach and your frequent infirmities.	23 You should give up drinking only water and have a little wine for the sake of your digestion and thefrequent bouts of illness that you have.
24 The sins of some men have been made manifest, preceding them to judgment, but those of others are manifested later.	24 The faults of some people are obvious long before they come to the reckoning, while others have faultsthat are not discovered until later.
25 Similarly, too, good deeds have been made manifest, but even when they are not, they cannot remain hidden.	25 Similarly, the good that people do can be obvious; but even when it is not, it cannot remain hidden.
