CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINGREEK BIBLE
Then, on the first Sabbath, at very first light, they went to the tomb, carrying the aromatic spices that they had prepared.1 Την δε πρωτην ημεραν της εβδομαδος, ενω ητο ορθρος βαθυς, ηλθον εις το μνημα φερουσαι τα οποια ητοιμασαν αρωματα, και αλλαι τινες μετ' αυτων.
And they found the stone rolled back from the tomb.2 Ευρον δε τον λιθον αποκεκυλισμενον απο του μνημειου,
And upon entering, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.3 και εισελθουσαι δεν ευρον το σωμα του Κυριου Ιησου.
And it happened that, while their minds were still confused about this, behold, two men stood beside them, in shining apparel.4 Και ενω ησαν εν απορια περι τουτου, ιδου, δυο ανδρες εσταθησαν εμπροσθεν αυτων με ιματια αστραπτοντα.
Then, since they were afraid and were turning their faces toward the ground, these two said to them: “Why do you seek the living with the dead?5 Καθως δε αυται εφοβηθησαν και εκλινον το προσωπον εις την γην, ειπον προς αυτας? Τι ζητειτε τον ζωντα μετα των νεκρων;
He is not here, for he has risen. Recall how he spoke to you, when he was still in Galilee,6 δεν ειναι εδω, αλλ' ανεστη?
saying: ‘For the Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.’
And they called to mind his words.8 Και ενεθυμηθησαν τους λογους αυτου.
And returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the eleven, and to all the others.9 Και αφου υπεστρεψαν απο του μνημειου, απηγγειλαν ταυτα παντα προς τους ενδεκα και παντας τους λοιπους.
Now it was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary of James, and the other women who were with them, who told these things to the Apostles.10 Ησαν δε η Μαγδαληνη Μαρια και Ιωαννα και Μαρια η μητηρ του Ιακωβου και αι λοιπαι μετ' αυτων, αιτινες ελεγον ταυτα προς τους αποστολους.
But these words seemed to them a delusion. And so they did not believe them.11 Και οι λογοι αυτων εφανησαν ενωπιον αυτων ως φλυαρια, και δεν επιστευον εις αυτας.
But Peter, rising up, ran to the tomb. And stooping down, he saw the linen cloths positioned alone, and he went away wondering to himself about what had happened.12 Ο δε Πετρος σηκωθεις εδραμεν εις το μνημειον, και παρακυψας βλεπει τα σαβανα κειμενα μονα, και ανεχωρησε, θαυμαζων καθ' εαυτον το γεγονος.
And behold, two of them went out, on the same day, to a town named Emmaus, which was the distance of sixty stadia from Jerusalem.13 Και ιδου, δυο εξ αυτων επορευοντο εν αυτη τη ημερα εις κωμην ονομαζομενην Εμμαους, απεχουσαν εξηκοντα σταδια απο Ιερουσαλημ.
And they spoke to one another about all of these things that had occurred.14 Και αυτοι ωμιλουν προς αλληλους περι παντων των συμβεβηκοτων τουτων.
And it happened that, while they were speculating and questioning within themselves, Jesus himself, drawing near, traveled with them.15 Και ενω ωμιλουν και συνδιελεγοντο, πλησιασας και αυτος ο Ιησους επορευετο μετ' αυτων?
But their eyes were restrained, so that they would not recognize him.16 αλλ' οι οφθαλμοι αυτων εκρατουντο δια να μη γνωρισωσιν αυτον.
And he said to them, “What are these words, which you are discussing with one another, as you walk and are sad?”17 Ειπε δε προς αυτους? Τινες ειναι οι λογοι ουτοι, τους οποιους συνομιλειτε προς αλληλους περιπατουντες, και εισθε σκυθρωποι;
And one of them, whose name was Cleopas, responded by saying to him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”18 Αποκριθεις δε ο εις, ονομαζομενος Κλεοπας, ειπε προς αυτον? Συ μονος παροικεις εν Ιερουσαλημ και δεν εμαθες τα γενομενα εν αυτη εν ταις ημεραις ταυταις;
And he said to them, “What things?” And they said, “About Jesus of Nazareth, who was a noble prophet, powerful in works and in words, before God and all the people.19 Και ειπε προς αυτους? Ποια; Οι δε ειπον προς αυτον? Τα περι Ιησου του Ναζωραιου, οστις εσταθη ανηρ προφητης δυνατος εν εργω και λογω ενωπιον του Θεου και παντος του λαου,
And how our high priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death. And they crucified him.20 και πως παρεδωκαν αυτον οι αρχιερεις και οι αρχοντες ημων εις καταδικην θανατου και εσταυρωσαν αυτον.
But we were hoping that he would be the Redeemer of Israel. And now, on top of all this, today is the third day since these things have happened.21 ημεις δε ηλπιζομεν οτι αυτος ειναι ο μελλων να λυτρωση τον Ισραηλ?
Then, too, certain women from among us terrified us. For before daytime, they were at the tomb,22 Αλλα και γυναικες τινες εξ ημων εξεπληξαν ημας, αιτινες υπηγον την αυγην εις το μνημειον,
and, having not found his body, they returned, saying that they had even seen a vision of Angels, who said that he is alive.23 και μη ευρουσαι το σωμα αυτου, ηλθον λεγουσαι οτι ειδον και οπτασιαν αγγελων, οιτινες λεγουσιν οτι αυτος ζη.
And some of us went out to the tomb. And they found it just as the women had said. But truly, they did not find him.”24 Και τινες των υμετερων υπηγον εις το μνημειον και ευρον ουτω, καθως και αι γυναικες ειπον, αυτον ομως δεν ειδον.
And he said to them: “How foolish and reluctant in heart you are, to believe everything that has been spoken by the Prophets!25 Και αυτος ειπε προς αυτους? Ω ανοητοι και βραδεις την καρδιαν εις το να πιστευητε εις παντα οσα ελαλησαν οι προφηται?
Was not the Christ required to suffer these things, and so enter into his glory?”26 δεν επρεπε να παθη ταυτα ο Χριστος και να εισελθη εις την δοξαν αυτου;
And beginning from Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted for them, in all the Scriptures, the things that were about him.27 Και αρχισας απο Μωυσεως και απο παντων των προφητων, διηρμηνευεν εις αυτους τα περι εαυτου γεγραμμενα εν πασαις ταις γραφαις.
And they drew near to the town were they were going. And he conducted himself so as to go on further.28 Και επλησιασαν εις την κωμην οπου επορευοντο, και αυτος προσεποιειτο οτι υπαγει μακροτερα?
But they were insistent with him, saying, “Remain with us, because it is toward evening and now daylight is declining.” And so he entered with them.29 και παρεβιασαν αυτον, λεγοντες?
And it happened that, while he was at table with them, he took bread, and he blessed and broke it, and he extended it to them.30 Και αφου εκαθησε μετ' αυτων εις την τραπεζαν, λαβων τον αρτον ευλογησε και κοψας εδιδεν εις αυτους.
And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their eyes.31 Αυτων δε διηνοιχθησαν οι οφθαλμοι, και εγνωρισαν αυτον.
And they said to one another, “Was not our heart burning within us, while he was speaking on the way, and when he opened the Scriptures to us?”32 Και ειπον προς αλληλους? Δεν εκαιετο εν υμιν η καρδια ημων, οτε ελαλει προς ημας καθ' οδον και μας εξηγει τας γραφας;
And rising up at that same hour, they returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven gathered together, and those who were with them,33 Και σηκωθεντες τη αυτη ωρα υπεστρεψαν εις Ιερουσαλημ, και ευρον συνηθροισμενους τους ενδεκα και τους μετ' αυτων,
saying: “In truth, the Lord has risen, and he has appeared to Simon.”34 οιτινες ελεγον οτι οντως ανεστη ο Κυριος και εφανη εις τον Σιμωνα.
And they explained the things that were done on the way, and how they had recognized him at the breaking of the bread.35 Και αυτοι διηγουντο τα εν τη οδω και πως εγνωρισθη εις αυτους, ενω εκοπτε τον αρτον.
Then, while they were talking about these things, Jesus stood in their midst, And he said to them: “Peace be with you. It is I. Do not be afraid.”36 Ενω δε ελαλουν ταυτα, αυτος ο Ιησους εσταθη εν μεσω αυτων και λεγει προς αυτους?
Yet truly, they were very disturbed and terrified, supposing that they saw a spirit.37 Εκεινοι δε εκπλαγεντες και εμφοβοι γενομενοι ενομιζον οτι εβλεπον πνευμα.
And he said to them: “Why are you disturbed, and why do these thoughts rise up in your hearts?38 Και ειπε προς αυτους? Δια τι εισθε τεταραγμενοι; και δια τι αναβαινουσιν εις τας καρδιας σας διαλογισμοι;
See my hands and feet, that it is I myself. Look and touch. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see that I have.”39 ιδετε τας χειρας μου και τους ποδας μου, οτι αυτος εγω ειμαι?
And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet.40 Και τουτο ειπων, εδειξεν εις αυτους τας χειρας και τους ποδας.
Then, while they were still in disbelief and in wonder out of joy, he said, “Do you have anything here to eat?”41 Ενω δε αυτοι ηπιστουν ετι απο της χαρας και εθαυμαζον, ειπε προς αυτους? Εχετε τι φαγωσιμον ενταυθα;
And they offered him a piece of roasted fish and a honeycomb.42 Οι δε εδωκαν εις αυτον μερος οπτου ιχθυος και απο κηρηθραν μελιτος.
And when he had eaten these in their sight, taking up what was left, he gave it to them.43 Και λαβων ενωπιον αυτων εφαγεν.
And he said to them: “These are the words that I spoke to you when I was still with you, because all things must be fulfilled which are written in the law of Moses, and in the Prophets, and in the Psalms about me.”44 Ειπε δε προς αυτους?
Then he opened their mind, so that they might understand the Scriptures.45 Τοτε διηνοιξεν αυτων τον νουν, δια να καταλαβωσι τας γραφας?
And he said to them: “For so it is written, and so it was necessary, for the Christ to suffer and to rise up from the dead on the third day,46 και ειπε προς αυτους οτι ουτως ειναι γεγραμμενον και ουτως επρεπε να παθη ο Χριστος και να αναστηθη εκ νεκρων τη τριτη ημερα,
and, in his name, for repentance and the remission of sins to be preached, among all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.47 και να κηρυχθη εν τω ονοματι αυτου μετανοια και αφεσις αμαρτιων εις παντα τα εθνη, γινομενης αρχης απο Ιερουσαλημ.
And you are witnesses of these things.48 Σεις δε εισθε μαρτυρες τουτων.
And I am sending the Promise of my Father upon you. But you must stay in the city, until such time as you are clothed with power from on high.”49 Και ιδου, εγω αποστελλω την επαγγελιαν του Πατρος μου εφ' υμας?
Then he led them out as far as Bethania. And lifting up his hands, he blessed them.50 Και εφερεν αυτους εξω εως εις Βηθανιαν, και υψωσας τας χειρας αυτου ευλογησεν αυτους.
And it happened that, while he was blessing them, he withdrew from them, and he was carried up into heaven.51 Και ενω ευλογει αυτους, απεχωρισθη απ' αυτων και ανεφερετο εις τον ουρανον.
And worshiping, they returned to Jerusalem with great joy.52 Και αυτοι προσκυνησαντες αυτον, υπεστρεψαν εις Ιερουσαλημ μετα χαρας μεγαλης,
And they were always in the temple, praising and blessing God.
