CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINEL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
Then, on the first Sabbath, at very first light, they went to the tomb, carrying the aromatic spices that they had prepared.1 El primer día de la semana, al amanecer, las mujeres fueron al sepulcro con los perfumes que habían preparado.
And they found the stone rolled back from the tomb.2 Ellas encontraron removida la piedra del sepulcro
And upon entering, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.3 y entraron, pero no hallaron el cuerpo del Señor Jesús.
And it happened that, while their minds were still confused about this, behold, two men stood beside them, in shining apparel.4 Mientras estaban desconcertadas a causa de esto, se les aparecieron dos hombres con vestiduras deslumbrantes.
Then, since they were afraid and were turning their faces toward the ground, these two said to them: “Why do you seek the living with the dead?5 Como las mujeres, llenas de temor, no se atrevían a levantar la vista del suelo, ellos les preguntaron: «¿Por qué buscan entre los muertos al que está vivo?
He is not here, for he has risen. Recall how he spoke to you, when he was still in Galilee,6 No está aquí, ha resucitado. Recuerden lo que él les decía cuando aún estaba en Galilea:
saying: ‘For the Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.’ ”7 «Es necesario que el Hijo del Hombre sea entregado en manos de los pecadores, que sea crucificado y que resucite al tercer día».
And they called to mind his words.8 Y las mujeres recordaron sus palabras.
And returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the eleven, and to all the others.9 Cuando regresaron del sepulcro, refirieron esto a los Once y a todos los demás.
Now it was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary of James, and the other women who were with them, who told these things to the Apostles.10 Eran María Magdalena, Juana y María, la madre de Santiago, y las demás mujeres que las acompañaban. Ellas contaron todo a los Apóstoles,
But these words seemed to them a delusion. And so they did not believe them.11 pero a ellos les pareció que deliraban y no les creyeron.
But Peter, rising up, ran to the tomb. And stooping down, he saw the linen cloths positioned alone, and he went away wondering to himself about what had happened.12 Pedro, sin embargo, se levantó y corrió hacia el sepulcro, y al asomarse, no vio más que las sábanas. Entonces regresó lleno de admiración por lo que había sucedido.
And behold, two of them went out, on the same day, to a town named Emmaus, which was the distance of sixty stadia from Jerusalem.13 Ese mismo día, dos de los discípulos iban a un pequeño pueblo llamado Emaús, situado a unos diez kilómetros de Jerusalén.
And they spoke to one another about all of these things that had occurred.14 En el camino hablaban sobre lo que había ocurrido.
And it happened that, while they were speculating and questioning within themselves, Jesus himself, drawing near, traveled with them.15 Mientras conversaban y discutían, el mismo Jesús se acercó y siguió caminando con ellos.
But their eyes were restrained, so that they would not recognize him.16 Pero algo impedía que sus ojos lo reconocieran.
And he said to them, “What are these words, which you are discussing with one another, as you walk and are sad?”17 El les dijo: «¿Qué comentaban por el camino?». Ellos se detuvieron, con el semblante triste,
And one of them, whose name was Cleopas, responded by saying to him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”18 y uno de ellos, llamado Cleofás, le respondió: «¡Tú eres el único forastero en Jerusalén que ignora lo que pasó en estos días!».
And he said to them, “What things?” And they said, “About Jesus of Nazareth, who was a noble prophet, powerful in works and in words, before God and all the people.19 «¿Qué cosa?», les preguntó. Ellos respondieron: «Lo referente a Jesús, el Nazareno, que fue un profeta poderoso en obras y en palabras delante de Dios y de todo el pueblo,
And how our high priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death. And they crucified him.20 y cómo nuestros sumos sacerdotes y nuestros jefes lo entregaron para ser condenado a muerte y lo crucificaron.
But we were hoping that he would be the Redeemer of Israel. And now, on top of all this, today is the third day since these things have happened.21 Nosotros esperábamos que fuera él quien librara a Israel. Pero a todo esto ya van tres días que sucedieron estas cosas.
Then, too, certain women from among us terrified us. For before daytime, they were at the tomb,22 Es verdad que algunas mujeres que están con nosotros nos han desconcertado: ellas fueron de madrugada al sepulcro
and, having not found his body, they returned, saying that they had even seen a vision of Angels, who said that he is alive.23 y al no hallar el cuerpo de Jesús, volvieron diciendo que se les había aparecido unos ángeles, asegurándoles que él está vivo.
And some of us went out to the tomb. And they found it just as the women had said. But truly, they did not find him.”24 Algunos de los nuestros fueron al sepulcro y encontraron todo como las mujeres habían dicho. Pero a él no lo vieron».
And he said to them: “How foolish and reluctant in heart you are, to believe everything that has been spoken by the Prophets!25 Jesús les dijo: «¡Hombres duros de entendimiento, cómo les cuesta creer todo lo que anunciaron los profetas!
Was not the Christ required to suffer these things, and so enter into his glory?”26 ¿No será necesario que el Mesías soportara esos sufrimientos para entrar en su gloria?»
And beginning from Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted for them, in all the Scriptures, the things that were about him.27 Y comenzando por Moisés y continuando en todas las Escrituras lo que se refería a él.
And they drew near to the town were they were going. And he conducted himself so as to go on further.28 Cuando llegaron cerca del pueblo adonde iban, Jesús hizo ademán de seguir adelante.
But they were insistent with him, saying, “Remain with us, because it is toward evening and now daylight is declining.” And so he entered with them.29 Pero ellos le insistieron: «Quédate con nosotros, porque ya es tarde y el día se acaba». El entró y se quedó con ellos.
And it happened that, while he was at table with them, he took bread, and he blessed and broke it, and he extended it to them.30 Y estando a la mesa, tomó el pan y pronunció la bendición; luego lo partió y se lo dio.
And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their eyes.31 Entonces los ojos de los discípulos se abrieron y lo reconocieron, pero él había desaparecido de su vista.
And they said to one another, “Was not our heart burning within us, while he was speaking on the way, and when he opened the Scriptures to us?”32 Y se decían: «¿No ardía acaso nuestro corazón, mientras nos hablaba en el camino y nos explicaba las Escrituras?».
And rising up at that same hour, they returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven gathered together, and those who were with them,33 En ese mismo momento, se pusieron en camino y regresaron a Jerusalén. Allí encontraron reunidos a los Once y a los demás que estaban con ellos,
saying: “In truth, the Lord has risen, and he has appeared to Simon.”34 y estos les dijeron: «Es verdad, ¡el Señor ha resucitado y se apareció a Simón!».
And they explained the things that were done on the way, and how they had recognized him at the breaking of the bread.35 Ellos, por su parte, contaron lo que les había pasado en el camino y cómo lo habían reconocido al partir el pan.
Then, while they were talking about these things, Jesus stood in their midst, And he said to them: “Peace be with you. It is I. Do not be afraid.”36 Todavía estaban hablando de esto, cuando Jesús se apareció en medio de ellos y les dijo: «La paz esté con ustedes».
Yet truly, they were very disturbed and terrified, supposing that they saw a spirit.37 Atónitos y llenos de temor, creían ver un espíritu,
And he said to them: “Why are you disturbed, and why do these thoughts rise up in your hearts?38 pero Jesús les preguntó: «¿Por qué están turbados y se les presentan esas dudas?
See my hands and feet, that it is I myself. Look and touch. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see that I have.”39 Miren mis manos y mis pies, soy yo mismo. Tóquenme y vean. Un espíritu no tiene carne ni huesos, como ven que yo tengo».
And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet.40 Y diciendo esto, les mostró sus manos y sus pies.
Then, while they were still in disbelief and in wonder out of joy, he said, “Do you have anything here to eat?”41 Era tal la alegría y la admiración de los discípulos, que se resistían a creer. Pero Jesús les preguntó: «¿Tienen aquí algo para comer?».
And they offered him a piece of roasted fish and a honeycomb.42 Ellos le presentaron un trozo de pescado asado;
And when he had eaten these in their sight, taking up what was left, he gave it to them.43 él lo tomó y lo comió delante de todos.
And he said to them: “These are the words that I spoke to you when I was still with you, because all things must be fulfilled which are written in the law of Moses, and in the Prophets, and in the Psalms about me.”44 Después les dijo: «Cuando todavía estaba con ustedes, yo les decía: Es necesario que se cumpla todo lo que está escrito de mí en la Ley de Moisés, en los Profetas y en los Salmos».
Then he opened their mind, so that they might understand the Scriptures.45 Entonces les abrió la inteligencia para que pudieran comprender las Escrituras,
And he said to them: “For so it is written, and so it was necessary, for the Christ to suffer and to rise up from the dead on the third day,46 y añadió: «Así esta escrito: el Mesías debía sufrir y resucitar de entre los muertos al tercer día,
and, in his name, for repentance and the remission of sins to be preached, among all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.47 y comenzando por Jerusalén, en su Nombre debía predicarse a todas las naciones la conversión para el perdón de los pecados.
And you are witnesses of these things.48 Ustedes son testigos de todo esto.
And I am sending the Promise of my Father upon you. But you must stay in the city, until such time as you are clothed with power from on high.”49 Y yo les enviaré lo que mi Padre les ha prometido. Permanezcan en la ciudad, hasta que sean revestidos con la fuerza que viene de lo alto».
Then he led them out as far as Bethania. And lifting up his hands, he blessed them.50 Después Jesús los llevó hasta las proximidades de Betania y, elevando sus manos, los bendijo.
And it happened that, while he was blessing them, he withdrew from them, and he was carried up into heaven.51 Mientras los bendecía, se separó de ellos y fue llevado al cielo.
And worshiping, they returned to Jerusalem with great joy.52 Los discípulos, que se habían postrado delante de él, volvieron a Jerusalén con gran alegría,
And they were always in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.53 y permanecían continuamente en el Templo alabando a Dios.
