Sirach 33

1 No evils will befall one who fears the Lord. Instead, God will preserve him during temptation and will free him from evils.	1 - a chi teme il Signore non incoglierà male; ma nella tentazione Dio lo salverà e lo libererà da' mali.
2 A wise man does not hate the commandments and the justices, and so he will not be thrown about violently, like a ship in a storm.	2 il savio non odia i comandamenti e la legge, e non sarà sbattuto [contro gli scogli] come una nave in burrasca.
3 A man of understanding puts his faith in the law of God, and so the law is faithful to him.	3 L'uomo assennato ha fiducia nella legge di Dio, e la legge è per lui fedele [come un oracolo].
4 Whoever would resolve a dispute will prepare a word, and so, having prayed, he will be heard. And he will observe discipline, and then he will respond.	4 Prepara il discorso e sarai ascoltato; raccogli il tuo sapere e rispondi.
5 The heart of a fool is like the wheel of a cart. And his thoughts are like a turning axel.	5 Come la ruota d'un carro son le interiora dello stolto, e come un asse che gira, i suoi pensieri.
6 A friend who is a whisperer is like an untamed horse: he neighs under anyone who sits upon him.	6 Come un cavallo stallone è l'amico beffardo: sotto chiunque lo monta, nitrisce.
7 Why does day follow after day, and light follow after light, and year follow after year, in accord with the sun?	7 Perchè un giorno sopravanza un altro, mentre la luce d'ogni giorno dell'anno [viene] dal sole?
8 By the knowledge of the Lord, they were arranged, after the sun was made, in keeping with his command.	8 Dalla sapienza del Signore furono distinti, fatto che fu il sole, che obbedisce agli ordini;
9 And so, the seasons changed, with their feast days. And according to them, they celebrated the feast days, in their hour.	9 ed egli variò le stagioni e i loro giorni festivi, che in quelle son celebrati all'ora stabilita.
10 Some of them, God exalted and magnified. And some of them, he set amid the ordinary days. And all men are from the ground, and from the earth, from which Adam was created.	10 Alcuni di quei [giorni] Dio esaltò e santificò; altri di essi mise a far numero tra i giorni. E [cosi] tutti gli uomini [vengono] dalla polvere, e dalla terra, donde fu creato Adamo.
11 With a mulititude of disciplines, the Lord has distinguished them and diversified their ways.	11 Nella pienezza della sapienza il Signore li distinse, e variò le loro vie:
12 Some of them, he has blessed and exalted. And some of them he has sanctified and placed close to himself. And some of them, he has cursed and brought low, and he has turned them from their station.	12 alcuni di essi benedisse ed esaltò, e parte ne santificò e avvicinò a sè; e altri ne maledisse e umiliò, e li rovesciò dalla loro posizione.
13 Just as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so as to form and to shape it,	13 Come la creta del vasaio è in mano sua perchè l'impasti e la formi,
14 so are all his ways in accord with his dispensation, and so is man in the hand of the One who made him. And he will repay him according to his judgment.	14 e tutti i suoi destini dipendono dal beneplacito di lui; così l'uomo è in mano di colui che l'ha creato, il quale dà a lui secondo il suo giudizio.
15 Good is against evil, and life is against death; so also is a sinner against a just man. And so should you consider all the works of the Most High: two and two, and one against another.	15 Di fronte al male sta il bene e di fronte alla morte la vita: cosi di fronte al giusto il peccatore. E similmente osserva tutte le opere dell'Altissimo: [son sempre] a due a due, l'una opposta all'altra.
16 And I awakened at the very end, and I was like one who gathers grapes after the grape-gatherers.	16 Or io mi son levato Pulitino [tra i cultori della sapienza], e come uno che racimola dietro i vendemmiatori.
17 I, too, have hoped in the blessing of God. And I have filled the winepress like one who gathers grapes.	17 Nella benedizione del Signore ho sperato, e come uno che vendemmia ho riempito il tino.
18 Consider how I have not labored for myself alone, but for all who are seeking discipline.	18 Vedete come non per me solo ho lavorato, ma per tutti quelli che cercano d'istruirsi.
19 Listen to me, you great ones, with all the peoples. And incline your ears, you rulers of the Church.	19 Ascoltatemi, o grandi del popolo, e voi, che presiedete alla società, prestate orecchio.
20 You should not give authority over yourself to a son or wife, to a brother or friend, in your life. And you should not give your estate to another, lest perhaps you may regret it, and then you would be begging for the same.	20 Al figliuolo e alla moglie, al fratello e all'amico non dar braccio su te durante la tua vita. E non abbandonare ad altri le tue ricchezze, perchè tu non abbia a pentirtene e supplicare per riaverle.
21 While you are still living and breathing, let no one among all flesh change you.	21 Fintantoché tu vivi e respiri, che nessuno pigli il tuo posto.
22 For it is better if your children petition you, than if you look toward the hands of your children.	22 Meglio è che i figliuoli preghino te, che tu debba guardare [in supplice attesa] alle mani de' tuoi figliuoli.
23 In all your works, be pre-eminent.	23 In tutte le tue azioni resta tu il padrone:
24 You should not allow a blemish upon your glory. On the day of the consummation of the days of your life, at the time of your passing, distribute your inheritance.	24 non imprimer macchia alla tua riputazione. Sul punto di finire i giorni di tua vita, e nell'ora della tua morte, [allora] distribuisci la tua eredità,
25 Fodder and a rod and a burden are for a donkey; bread and discipline and work are for a servant.	25 pasto, bastone e soma all'asino: pane, castigo e lavoro allo schiavo.
26 He works under discipline, and he seeks rest. Allow his hands to be idle, and he seeks liberty.	26 Questi lavora [solo] se castigato, e cerca il riposo; lasciagli le mani sciolte, e cercherà la libertà.
27 The yoke and the strap bend a stiff neck, and continual labors bend a servant.	27 Il giogo e la briglia fan piegare il collo rigido, e le continue fatiche domano lo schiavo;
28 Torture and chains are for a malevolent servant; send him to work, so that he may not be idle.	28 per lo schiavo cattivo la tortura e i ceppi! Immergilo nel lavoro, che non stia ozioso;
29 For idleness has taught much evil.	29 perché di molto male l'ozio é maestro.
30 Appoint him to a task. For this is fitting for him. And if he will not be obedient, bend him with chains. But you should do no more than any flesh can bear. Truly, you should do nothing grievous without judgment.	30 Mettilo al lavoro, come a lui si conviene: e se non t'obbedisce, domalo co' ceppi a' piedi. Ma non eccedere verso nessun uomo, e senza diritto non far nulla di grave,
31 If you have a faithful servant, let him be to you like your own soul. Treat him like a brother. For you have obtained him by the blood of your soul.	31 Se hai uno schiavo fedele, sia per te come l'anima tua, trattalo come un fratello: perché col sangue dell'anima l'hai comprato.
32 If you harm him unjustly, he will turn away and flee.	32 Se ingiustamente lo maltratti, si darà alla fuga.
33 And then, when he lifts himself up and departs, you will not know whom to ask, or in what way to seek him.	33 E se piglia e se ne va, non saprai a chi dimandarne, né per qual via andarne in cerca.
