1 Watching for wealth consumes the flesh, and thinking about it takes away sleep.	1 As vigílias para enriquecer consomem as carnes, e a preocupação com isso tira o sono.
2 Anticipation in thought distracts the mind, and a grievous infirmity makes the soul sober.	2 O pensamento inquieto sobre o que poderá suceder perturba o sossego, e a enfermidade grave torna a alma sóbria.
3 The rich man has labored in gathering wealth, and in his rest, he will be filled with his goods.	3 O rico afadiga-se por juntar riquezas, e, quando se entrega ao repouso, goza dos seus bens.
4 The poor man has labored in his lowly way, and in the end, he may still be in need.	4 Trabalha o pobre para ter que comer, e no fim acha-se (ainda) necessitado.
5 Whoever loves gold will not be justified. And whoever pursues consumption will be consumed by it.	5 Aquele que ama o ouro não estará sem pecado, e aquele que vai atrás da corrupção, será cheio dela.
6 Many have been caused to fall because of gold, and it became their ruin by its beauty.	6 Muitos caíram por causa do ouro, cuja beleza foi a sua perdição. O ouro é uma pedra de tropeço para os que lhe sacrificam. Ai daqueles que vão atrás dele! Por sua causa perecerá todo o insensato.
7 Gold is a stumbling block to those who sacrifice for it. Woe to those who pursue it eagerly, for all the imprudent will perish by it.
8 Blessed is the rich man who is found to be without blemish. And blessed is he who has not gone after gold, nor placed his hope in money or treasures.	8 Bem-aventurado o rico que foi achado sem mancha, que não correu atraído pelo ouro, que não pôs a sua esperança no dinheiro nem nos tesouros.
9 Who is he? For we should praise him. For he has done wonderful things in his life.	9 Quem é este, para nós o louvarmos? Realmente fez coisas maravilhosas em sua vida.
10 He has been tested by it, and has become perfect; he will have eternal glory. He was able to transgress, but he has not transgressed. He was able to do evil, but he has not done evil.	10 Ao que foi provado pelo ouro e encontrado perfeito, está reservada uma glória eterna: pôde transgredir a lei de Deus, e não a transgrediu, pôde fazer o mal, e não o fez.
11 Therefore, his good things are established in the Lord, and the entire Church of the saints will proclaim his almsgiving.	11 Por isso os seus bens foram assegurados no Senhor, e toda a assembleia dos santos celebrará as suas esmolas.
12 Are you seated at a great table? You should not open your mouth over it first.	12 Sentaste-te a uma grande mesa? Não sejas tu o primeiro a abrir a boca.
13 You should not speak in this way: “There are many things that are upon it.”	13 Não digas: Que abundância de iguarias há sobre ela!
14 Remember that a wicked eye is evil.	14 Lembra-te que é má coisa um olho invejoso.
15 What has been made more wicked than the eye? Therefore, when it sees, it will shed tears over the entire face.	15 Que coisa há pior que semelhante olho ? Por isso chora com todo o seu rosto.
16 You should not extend your hand first, for then, having been corrupted by envy, you would be ashamed.	16 Quando olhar (aquele que te convidou), não sejas o primeiro a estender a mão, para que não cores, envergonhado pela tua gula.
17 You should not press forward at a feast.	17 Não comas à sobreposse, durante o banquete.
18 Understand which things are your neighbor’s and not your own.	18 Julga das disposições do teu próximo pelas tuas.
19 Make use of the things that are set before you, just as a frugal man would. Otherwise, if you eat much, you will be hated.	19 Usa como um homem sóbrio do que te puser diante, não suceda que, por comeres muito, te tornes odioso.
20 Cease eating first, for the sake of discipline. And do not eat to excess, lest you offend.	20 Sê o primeiro a acabar em sinal da tua boa educação, e não te desmandes, para que não desgostes ninguém.
21 And if you sit in the midst of many, you should not extend your hand before they do, and you should not be the first to ask for a drink.	21 Se estás sentado entre muitas pessoas, não estendas a mão antes delas, nem sejas o primeiro a pedir de beber. Quão pouco vinho é suficiente para um homem regrado ! Assim, quando dormires, não te causará desassossego, nem sentirás dor.
22 How sufficient is a little wine for a well-taught man! For in sleep, you will not labor because of it, and you will not feel pain.
23 Worry, and disease, and torment are with an intemperate man.	23 Vigília, cólica e ânsias, terá o homem intemperante.
24 A healthy sleep is with a temperate man. He will sleep until morning, and his soul will be delighted with him.	24 O homem sóbrio terá um sono salutar, dormirá até pela manhã, e a sua alma se deleitará com ele. Se fores obrigado a comer muito, levanta-te e vomita : achar-te-ás aliviado, e não atrairás ao teu corpo uma doença.
25 And if you have been coaxed into eating too much, rise up, go outside, and vomit. And it will refresh you, and you will not bring sickness upon your body.
26 Listen to me, son, for you should not spurn me. And in the very end, you will discover my words.	26 Ouve-me, filho, e não me desprezes: no fim reconhecerás a verdade das minhas palavras. Sê pronto em todas as tuas acções, e não te virá nenhuma enfermidade.
27 In all your works, be prompt, and then no infirmity will befall you.
28 The lips of many will bless the splendid in bread. For the testimony of his truthfulness is faithful.	28 Os lábios de muitos bem-dirão aquele que dá de comer liberalmente, e dar-se-á um testemunho fiel da sua generosidade.
29 The city will murmur against the wicked in bread. For the testimony against his wickedness is true.	29 Toda a cidade murmurará contra o que é mesquinho em dar pão, e o testemunho que dá da sua mesquinhez é verdadeiro.
30 Do not choose to provoke those who love wine. For wine has destroyed many.	30 Não provoques (a beber) aqueles que são amigos do vinho, porque o vinho tem perdido muitos.
31 Fire tests the hardness of iron; similarly, drinking wine to inebriation will rebuke the hearts of the arrogant.	31 O fogo prova a dureza do ferro: assim o vinho bebido até embriagar dará a conhecer o coração dos soberbos.
32 Drinking wine in sobriety gives a contented life to men. If you drink it in moderation, you will be sober.	32 O vinho bebido com sobriedade é como vida para os homens; se o beberes moderadamente, serás sóbrio.
33 What is life to him who is diminished by wine?	33 Que vida é a daquele a quem falta o vinho?
34 What can cheat him of his life? Death.	34 Que coisa é a que nos priva da vida? A morte.
35 From the beginning, wine was created for cheerfulness, but not for inebriation.	35 O vinho desde o princípio foi criado para regozijo, e não para embriaguez.
36 Wine taken in moderation lifts up the mind and the heart.	36 O vinho bebido moderadamente é o júbilo da alma e do coração.
37 Sober drinking is healthful to mind and body.	37 A temperança no beber é a saúde da alma e do corpo.
38 Wine taken in excess stirs up conflict and anger, and brings many to ruin.	38 O vinho bebido com excesso produz a irritação, a ira e muitas ruínas.
39 Wine taken in excess is bitter to the soul.	39 O vinho bebido com excesso é a amargura da alma.
40 The effects of inebriation are a stumbling block to the imprudent, diminishing strength and causing wounds.	40 A embriaguez inspira audácia, faz cair o insensato, diminui as forças e ocasiona feridas.
41 You should not argue with your neighbor during a banquet of wine. And you should not spurn him in his cheerfulness.	41 Em um festim de vinho (abundante) não arguas o próximo, e não o desprezes no calor da sua alegria.
42 You should not speak words of reproach to him. And you should not press him with repeated requests.	42 Não lhe digas palavras de censura e não o apertes com qualquer reclamação.
