Sirach 10

1 A wise judge will judge his people, and the leadership of an understanding man will be steadfast.	1 Il saggio magistrato renderà giustizia al suo popolo, e il governo dell'uomo assennato sarà stabile.
2 As the judge of the people is, so also are his assistants. And whatever kind of man the ruler of a city is, of such a kind also are those who live in it.	2 Quale è il capo del popolo, tali i suoi ministri; quale il governatore d'una città, tali i suoi abitanti.
3 A foolish king will be the ruin of his people. For cities will be inhabited through the understanding of those with power.	3 Un re imprudente rovinerà il suo popolo, e le città saranno ingrandite per la prudenza dei grandi.
4 Power over the earth is in the hand of God, and, in due time, he will raise up a helpful leader over the earth.	4 Ilgoverno del mondo è nelle mani di Dio, ed Egli a suo tempo farà sorgere il re che ci vuole.
5 The prosperity of a man is in the hand of God, and he will place his honor above the face of the scribe.	5 La felicità dell'uomo è nelle mani di Dio, ed Egli donerà la sua maestà alla faccia dello scriba.
6 You should forget all injury done to you by your neighbor, and you should do nothing among the works of injury.	6 Non ricordare le ingiurie ricevute dal prossimo, e non far nulla che sia ingiurioso.
7 Arrogance is hateful in the sight of God and of men. And all iniquity among the nations is abominable.	7 La superbia è odiata da Dio e dagli uomini, ed è in esecrazione ogni iniquità delle genti.
8 A kingdom is transferred from one people to another because of injustices, and injuries, and contempt, and every kind of deceit.	8 L'impero passa da una nazione all'altra a causa delle ingiustizie, delle violenze, degli oltraggi e d'ogni specie d'inganni.
9 But nothing is more wicked than a greedy man. Why should that which is earth and ashes be arrogant?	9 Nulla di più scelerato dell'avaro. Come può insuperbire la terra e la cenere?
10 There is nothing more iniquitous than to love money. For such a one has sold even his own soul. For in his life, he casts aside his innermost being.	10 Niente è più iniquo di colui che ama il danaro: egli infatti mette in vendita anche l'anima sua, giacché da vivo si cava le proprie viscere.
11 All power is of short life. A prolonged sickness is of grave concern to a physician.	11 Corta è la vita d'ogni potere. La lunga malattia stanca il medico,
12 A physician causes a sickness to be shortened. So also, a king is here today, and tomorrow he will die.	12 il medico tronca la corta malattia: così il re oggi vive e domani è morto.
13 For when a man dies, he will inherit serpents, and wild beasts, and worms.	13 E quando l'uomo è morto avrà, per suo retaggio serpenti, bestie e vermi.
14 The beginning of the arrogance of man is apostasy from God.	14 Il principio della superbia dell'uomo è l'apostasia da Dio:
15 For his heart has withdrawn from the One who made him. For arrogance is the beginning of all sin. Whoever holds to it, will be filled with evil words, and it will overthrow him in the end.	15 infatti il suo cuore s'allontana da colui che lo creò; e il primo di tutti i peccati è la superbia. Chi starà attaccato a lei sarà pieno di maledizioni, e alla fine andrà in rovina.
16 Because of this, the Lord has dishonored the gatherings of the evil, and he has destroyed them, even unto the end.	16 Per questo il Signore ha svergognate le riunioni dei malvagi, e li ha distrutti fino allo sterminio.
17 God has destroyed the seats of arrogant leaders, and he has caused the meek to be seated in their place.	17 Dio ha gettato a terra i troni dei principi superbi, e al loro posto vi ha fatto sedere i miti.
18 The roots of arrogant nations, God has dried up, and the humble among these nations, he has planted.	18 Dio ha fatto seccare le radici delle nazioni superbe, e al loro posto ha piantate le umili.
19 The Lord has overthrown the lands of the Gentiles, and he has utterly destroyed them, even to their foundation.	19 Dio ha distrutte le terre delle nazioni, le ha rovinate sin dai fondamenti,
20 He has dried up some of them, and he has utterly destroyed them, and he has caused their memory to depart from the earth.	20 Ne ha fatte seccare molte, ne ha dispersi gli abitanti, ha fatto sparire dal mondo la loro memoria.
21 God has abolished the memory of the arrogant, and he has left behind only the memory of those who are humble in mind.	21 Dio ha fatto sparire il ricordo dei superbi ed ha lasciata la memoria degli umili di spirito.
22 Arrogance was not created for men, nor was an angry temperament created for the gender of women.	22 Non fu creata per gli uomini la superbia, nè l'iracondia per i nati di donna.
23 Those who fear God among the offspring of men will be honored. But those among the offspring who ignore the commandments of the Lord will be dishonored.	23 La razza degli uomini che teme Dio sarà onorata, e disonorata sarà quella razza che trasgredisce i comandamenti del Signore.
24 In the midst of his brothers, a ruler has honor. And those who fear the Lord will have honor in his eyes.	24 Tra i fratelli è onorato il loro capo, ma agli occhi del Signore quelli che lo temono.
25 The fear of God is the glory of the wealthy, and of the honorable, and of the poor.	25 La gloria dei ricchi, dei grandi e dei poveri è il timor di Dio.
26 Do not choose to despise a just man who is poor, and do not choose to magnify a sinful man who is rich.	26 Guardati dal disprezzare il giusto povero e dal fare grande stima del peccatore ricco.
27 The great man, and the judge, and the powerful have honor. But no one is greater than he who fears God.	27 I grandi, i magistrati, i potenti sono in onore, ma nessuno è più grande di colui che teme Dio.
28 Those who are free will serve an understanding servant. And a prudent and disciplined man will not murmur at correction. But an ignorant man will not be honored.	28 Al servo sapiente serviranno gli uomini liberi; l'uomo prudente e disciplinato non mormorerà, se corretto, e l'ignorante non sarà onorato.
29 Do not choose to extol yourself in doing your work, and do not be unproductive during the time of distress.	29 Non pensare troppo altamente di te quando devi fare un lavoro, e non stare a vedere nel tempo del bisogno.
30 He who works, and so abounds in all things, is better than he who boasts, and so lacks bread.	30 Val più colui che lavora e abbonda di tutto, che uno che si vanta e manca di pane.
31 Son, preserve your soul in meekness, and give it honor according to its merit.	31 Figliolo, colla mansuetudine conserva la tua anima, e rendile onore secondo il suo merito.
32 Who will justify one who sins in his soul? And who will honor one who dishonors his soul?	32 Chi giustificherà colui che pecca contro l'anima, propria? Chi onorerà colui che disonora la sua anima?
33 The poor man is glorified by his discipline and fear. And there is a man who is honored because of his substance.	33 Il povero è onorato per la sua istruzione e il suo timore, e v'è anche l'uomo onorato per le sue ricchezze.
34 But if someone is glorified in poverty, how much more in substance? And whoever is glorified in substance, let him fear poverty.	34 Ma chi è glorioso nella povertà, quanto più sarebbe nelle ricchezze? Colui che si gloria delle ricchezze tema la povertà.
