Proverbs 1

1 The parables of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel,	1 Proverbi di Salomone, figlio di Davide, re d’Israele,
2 in order to know wisdom and discipline,	2 per conoscere la sapienza e l’istruzione, per capire i detti intelligenti,
3 to understand words of prudence, and to accept the instruction of doctrine, justice and judgment, and equity,	3 per acquistare una saggia educazione, equità, giustizia e rettitudine,
4 so as to give discernment to little ones, knowledge and understanding to adolescents.	4 per rendere accorti gli inesperti e dare ai giovani conoscenza e riflessione.
5 By listening, the wise shall become wiser and the intelligent shall possess governments.	5 Il saggio ascolti e accrescerà il sapere, e chi è avveduto acquisterà destrezza,
6 He shall turn his soul to a parable and to its interpretation, to the words of the wise and their enigmas.	6 per comprendere proverbi e allegorie, le massime dei saggi e i loro enigmi.
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. The foolish despise wisdom as well as doctrine.	7 Il timore del Signore è principio della scienza; gli stolti disprezzano la sapienza e l’istruzione.
8 Listen, my son, to the discipline of your father, and forsake not the law of your mother,	8 Ascolta, figlio mio, l’istruzione di tuo padre e non disprezzare l’insegnamento di tua madre,
9 so that grace may be added to your head and a collar to your neck.	9 perché saranno corona graziosa sul tuo capo e monili per il tuo collo.
10 My son, if sinners should entice you, do not consent to them.	10 Figlio mio, se i malvagi ti vogliono sedurre, tu non acconsentire!
11 If they should say: “Come with us. We will lie in wait for blood. We will lay traps against the innocent, without cause.	11 Se ti dicono: «Vieni con noi, complottiamo per spargere sangue, insidiamo senza motivo l’innocente,
12 Let us swallow him alive, like Hell, and whole, like one descending into the pit.	12 inghiottiamoli vivi come fa il regno dei morti, interi, come coloro che scendono nella fossa;
13 We will discover every precious substance. We will fill our houses with spoils.	13 troveremo ogni specie di beni preziosi, riempiremo di bottino le nostre case,
14 Cast your lot with us. One purse will be for us all.”	14 tu tirerai a sorte la tua parte insieme con noi, una sola borsa avremo in comune»,
15 My son, do not walk with them. Preclude your feet from their paths.	15 figlio mio, non andare per la loro strada, tieniti lontano dai loro sentieri!
16 For their feet rush to evil, and they hurry to shed blood.	16 I loro passi infatti corrono verso il male e si affrettano a spargere sangue.
17 But a net is thrown in vain before the eyes of those who have wings.	17 Invano si tende la rete sotto gli occhi di ogni sorta di uccelli.
18 Likewise, they lie in ambush against their own blood, and they undertake deceits against their own souls.	18 Ma costoro complottano contro il proprio sangue, pongono agguati contro se stessi.
19 Thus, the ways of all those who are greedy seize the souls of those who possess.	19 Tale è la fine di chi è avido di guadagno; la cupidigia toglie di mezzo colui che ne è dominato.
20 Wisdom forewarns far and wide; she bestows her voice in the streets.	20 La sapienza grida per le strade, nelle piazze fa udire la voce;
21 She cries out at the head of crowds; at the entrance of the gates of the city, she offers her words, saying:	21 nei clamori della città essa chiama, pronuncia i suoi detti alle porte della città:
22 “Little ones, how long will you choose to be childish, and how long will the foolish desire what is harmful to themselves, and how long will the imprudent hate knowledge?	22 «Fino a quando, o inesperti, amerete l’inesperienza e gli spavaldi si compiaceranno delle loro spavalderie e gli stolti avranno in odio la scienza?
23 Be converted by my correction. Lo, I will offer my spirit to you, and I will reveal my words to you.	23 Tornate alle mie esortazioni: ecco, io effonderò il mio spirito su di voi e vi manifesterò le mie parole.
24 For I called, and you refused. I extended my hand, and there was no one who watched.	24 Perché vi ho chiamati ma avete rifiutato, ho steso la mano e nessuno se ne è accorto.
25 You have despised all my counsels, and you have neglected my rebukes.	25 Avete trascurato ogni mio consiglio e i miei rimproveri non li avete accolti;
26 Similarly, I will ridicule you at your demise, and I will mock you, when that which you feared shall overcome you.	26 anch’io riderò delle vostre sventure, mi farò beffe quando su di voi verrà la paura,
27 When sudden calamity rushes upon you, and your demise advances like a tempest, when tribulation and anguish overcome you,	27 quando come una tempesta vi piomberà addosso il terrore, quando la disgrazia vi raggiungerà come un uragano, quando vi colpiranno angoscia e tribolazione.
28 then they will call to me, and I will not heed, they will arise in the morning, and not find me.	28 Allora mi invocheranno, ma io non risponderò, mi cercheranno, ma non mi troveranno.
29 For they held hatred for discipline, and they would not accept the fear of the Lord;	29 Perché hanno odiato la sapienza e non hanno preferito il timore del Signore,
30 they would not consent to my counsel, but they detracted from all of my corrections.	30 non hanno accettato il mio consiglio e hanno disprezzato ogni mio rimprovero;
31 Therefore, they shall eat the fruit of their way, and they shall have their fill of their own counsels.	31 mangeranno perciò il frutto della loro condotta e si sazieranno delle loro trame.
32 The loathing of the little ones shall destroy them, and the prosperity of the foolish shall perish them.	32 Sì, lo smarrimento degli inesperti li ucciderà e la spensieratezza degli sciocchi li farà perire;
33 But whoever will listen to me shall rest without terror, and shall have full enjoyment of abundance, without fear of evils.”	33 ma chi ascolta me vivrà in pace e sarà sicuro senza temere alcun male».
