1 Then Eliphaz the Themanite responded by saying:	1 Elifaz de Temã tomou a palavra nestes termos:
2 Can man be compared with God, even if he were perfect in knowledge?	2 Pode o homem ser útil a Deus? O sábio só é útil a si mesmo.
3 What advantage is it to God, if you were just? Or what do you provide for him, if your way should be immaculate?	3 De que serve ao Todo-poderoso que tu sejas justo? Tem ele interesse que teu proceder seja íntegro?
4 Will he reprove you and take you to judgment for being afraid,	4 É por causa de tua piedade que ele te pune, e entra contigo em juízo?
5 and not because of your many evil deeds and your infinite unfairness?	5 Não é enorme a tua malícia, e não são inumeráveis as tuas iniqüidades?
6 For you have taken away the collateral of your brothers without cause, and stripped them naked of their clothing.	6 Sem causa tomaste penhores a teus irmãos, despojaste de suas vestes os miseráveis;
7 You have not given water to the weary; you have taken bread away from the hungry.	7 não davas água ao sedento, recusavas o pão ao esfomeado.
8 By the strength of your arm, you took possession of the land, and you retain it by being the strongest.	8 A terra era do mais forte, e o protegido é que nela se estabelecia.
9 You have sent widows away empty, and you have crushed the shoulders of orphans.	9 Despedias as viúvas com as mãos vazias, quebravas os braços dos órfãos.
10 Because of this, you are surrounded by traps, and unexpected fears will disturb you.	10 Eis por que estás cercado de laços, e os terrores súbitos te amedrontam.
11 And did you think that you would not see darkness and that you were not to be overwhelmed by the on-rush of overflowing waters?	11 A luz obscureceu-se; já não vês nada; e o dilúvio águas te engole.
12 Have you not considered that God is higher than the heavens and is lifted above the height of the stars?	12 Não está Deus nas alturas dos céus? Vê a cabeça das estrelas como está alta!
13 And you say: “Well, what does God know?” and, “He judges, as if through a fog,”	13 E dizes: Que sabe Deus? Pode ele julgar através da nuvem opaca?
14 and, “The clouds are his hiding-place,” and, “He does not examine us closely,” and, “He makes his rounds at the limits of the heavens.”	14 As nuvens formam um véu que o impede de ver; ele passeia pela abóbada do céu.
15 Do you not want to tend the path of the ages, which wicked men have spurned?	15 Segues, pois, rotas antigas por onde andavam os homens iníquos
16 These were taken away before their time, and a flood overthrew their foundation.	16 que foram arrebatados antes do tempo, e cujos fundamentos foram arrastados com as águas,
17 They said to God, “Withdraw from us,” and they treated the Almighty as if he could do nothing,	17 e que diziam a Deus: Retira-te de nós, que poderia fazer-nos o Todo-poderoso?
18 though he had filled their houses with good things. May their way of thinking be far from me.	18 Foi ele, entretanto, que lhes cumulou de bens as casas; - longe de mim os conselhos dos maus! -
19 The just will see and will rejoice, and the innocent will mock them.	19 Vendo-os, os justos se alegram, e o inocente zomba deles:
20 Has not their haughtiness been cut down, and has not fire devoured the remnants of them?	20 Nossos inimigos estão aniquilados, e o fogo devorou-lhes as riquezas!
21 So, repose yourself with him and be at peace, and, in this way, you will have the best fruits.	21 Reconcilia-te, pois, com {Deus} e faz as pazes com ele, é assim que te será de novo dada a felicidade;
22 Accept the law from his mouth, and place his words in your heart.	22 aceita a instrução de sua boca, e põe suas palavras em teu coração.
23 If you will return to the Almighty, you will be rebuilt, and you will put sinfulness far from your tabernacle.	23 Se te voltares humildemente para o Todo-poderoso, se afastares a iniqüidade de tua tenda,
24 He will give you stone in place of dirt, and torrents of gold in place of stone.	24 se atirares as barras de ouro ao pó, e o ouro de Ofir entre os pedregulhos da torrente,
25 And the Almighty will be against your enemies, and silver will be gathered together for you.	25 o Todo-poderoso será teu ouro e um monte de prata para ti.
26 Then will you flock together in delight over the Almighty, and you will lift up your face to God.	26 Então farás do Todo-poderoso as tuas delícias, e levantarás teu rosto a Deus.
27 You will plead with him, and he will listen to you, and you will pay your vows.	27 Tu lhe rogarás, e ele te ouvirá, e cumprirás os teus votos:
28 You will decide on something, and it will come to you, and the light will shine in your ways.	28 formarás os teus projetos, que terão feliz êxito, e a luz brilhará em tuas veredas.
29 For he who had been humbled, will be in glory; and he who will lower his eyes, will be the one saved.	29 Pois Deus abaixa o altivo e o orgulhoso, mas socorre aquele que abaixa os olhos.
30 The innocent will be saved, and he will be saved with purity in his hands.	30 Salva o inocente, o qual é libertado pela pureza de suas mãos.
