1 Then Eliphaz the Themanite responded by saying:	1 Eliphaz di Theman allor prese a dire:
2 Can man be compared with God, even if he were perfect in knowledge?	2 Può egli agguagliarsi a Dio un uomo, quand'anche avesse una scienza perfetta?
3 What advantage is it to God, if you were just? Or what do you provide for him, if your way should be immaculate?	3 Torna egli forse in vantaggio di Dio se tu sarai giusto? E che aggiungi tu a lui se immacolata sarà la tua vita?
4 Will he reprove you and take you to judgment for being afraid,	4 Forse per timor ch'egli abbia ti accuserà, e verrà teco in giudizio?
5 and not because of your many evil deeds and your infinite unfairness?	5 E non fa egli questo per le moltissime tue malvagità, e per le infinite tue colpe?
6 For you have taken away the collateral of your brothers without cause, and stripped them naked of their clothing.	6 Perocché tu portasti via senza ragione il pegno de' tuoi fratelli, e spogliasti i meschini delle lor vesti.
7 You have not given water to the weary; you have taken bread away from the hungry.	7 Non desti acqua al sitibondo, e pane negasti all'affamato.
8 By the strength of your arm, you took possession of the land, and you retain it by being the strongest.	8 Colla forza del tuo braccio entrasti in possesso della terra, e potendone più degli altri in essa regnavi.
9 You have sent widows away empty, and you have crushed the shoulders of orphans.	9 Le vedove rimandasti indietro senza far loro ragione, e i pupilli privasti d'ogni sostegno.
10 Because of this, you are surrounded by traps, and unexpected fears will disturb you.	10 Per questo se' cinto di lacci, e turbato da repentini terrori.
11 And did you think that you would not see darkness and that you were not to be overwhelmed by the on-rush of overflowing waters?	11 E credevi che non avresti veduto mai tenebre, né saresti oppresso da tale impetuosa piena d'acque?
12 Have you not considered that God is higher than the heavens and is lifted above the height of the stars?	12 Pensi tu forse, che Dio è più sublime del cielo, e ch'ei sormonta l'altezza delle stelle?
13 And you say: “Well, what does God know?” and, “He judges, as if through a fog,”	13 Onde dici: Che può egli sapere Dio? Egli giudica quasi all'oscuro.
14 and, “The clouds are his hiding-place,” and, “He does not examine us closely,” and, “He makes his rounds at the limits of the heavens.”	14 Suo nascondiglio sono le nuvole, né alle cose, nostre egli pon mente, e attorno ai cardini del cielo passeggia.
15 Do you not want to tend the path of the ages, which wicked men have spurned?	15 Vuoi tu forse camminare per quella antica strada, che fu battuta dagli empj?
16 These were taken away before their time, and a flood overthrew their foundation.	16 I quali furon rapiti prima del loro tempo, e la fiumana roversciò i lor fondamenti:
17 They said to God, “Withdraw from us,” and they treated the Almighty as if he could do nothing,	17 I quali dicevano a Dio: Vattene da noi: e dell'Onnipotente tal avean concetto, come se nulla potesse:
18 though he had filled their houses with good things. May their way of thinking be far from me.	18 Mentre egli le case loro avea riempiute di beni. Lungi da me l'opinion di coloro.
19 The just will see and will rejoice, and the innocent will mock them.	19 I giusti vedranno, e ne avranno allegrezza, e l'innocente gli schernirà.
20 Has not their haughtiness been cut down, and has not fire devoured the remnants of them?	20 Non è ella stata gettata a terra la loro altezza, e i loro avanzi non son eglino stati consunti dal fuoco?
21 So, repose yourself with him and be at peace, and, in this way, you will have the best fruits.	21 Adattati adunque a lui, e avrei pace, e da ciò raccorrai ottimi frutti.
22 Accept the law from his mouth, and place his words in your heart.	22 Dalla bocca di lui prendi legge, e nel cuor tuo imprimi le sue parole.
23 If you will return to the Almighty, you will be rebuilt, and you will put sinfulness far from your tabernacle.	23 Se tornerai all'Onnipotente ti rimetterai in piedi, e rimoverai dalla tua casa l'iniquità.
24 He will give you stone in place of dirt, and torrents of gold in place of stone.	24 In vece di terra egli ti darà vivo masso, e in cambio di pietre, torrenti di oro.
25 And the Almighty will be against your enemies, and silver will be gathered together for you.	25 L'Onnipotente sarà teco contro de' tuoi nemici, e avrai l'argento a masse.
26 Then will you flock together in delight over the Almighty, and you will lift up your face to God.	26 Allora nell'Onnipotente troverai copia di delizie, e alzerai a Dio la tua faccia.
27 You will plead with him, and he will listen to you, and you will pay your vows.	27 Lo pregherai, ed egli ti esaudirà, e scioglierai i tuoi voti.
28 You will decide on something, and it will come to you, and the light will shine in your ways.	28 Risolverai una cosa, e sarà ridotta ad effetto, e le tue vie saran luminose.
29 For he who had been humbled, will be in glory; and he who will lower his eyes, will be the one saved.	29 Perocché chi fu umiliato sarà in gloria, e chi portò gli occhi bassi sarà salvato.
30 The innocent will be saved, and he will be saved with purity in his hands.	30 Sarà salvo l'innocente, e sarà salvo per la purezza delle sue mani.
