1 But Holofernes, on another day, instructed his army to ascend against Bethulia.	1 E Il dì seguente Oloferne comando alle sue schiere di incamminarsi verso Betulia.
2 Moreover, there were one hundred and twenty thousand foot-soldiers, and twenty-two thousand horsemen, besides the contingents of those men who had been taken captive, and all the youths who had been abducted from the provinces and the cities.	2 Or egli avea cento ventimila fanti agguerriti, e ventidue mila cavalli, oltre quelli, che avea levati per forza, e oltre tutta la gioventù condotta dalle provincie, e dalle città.
3 All these prepared themselves together to fight against the sons of Israel, and they came through the foothills of the mountain, even to the apex, which looks down upon Dothain, from the place which is called Belma, up to Chelmon, which is opposite Esdrelon.	3 Tutti si posero egualmente in ordine per combattere contro i figliuoli d'Israele, e si avanzarono per la parte inferiore del monte fino all'altura, che domina (sopra) Dothain dal luogo detto Belma fino a Chelmon, che è dirimpetto ad Esdrelon.
4 But the sons of Israel, when they saw the multitude of them, prostrated themselves upon the ground, scattering ashes over their heads, praying with one accord that the God of Israel would show his mercy upon his people.	4 Ma i figliuoli d'Israele quando ebber veduta quella moltitudine si prostraron boccone per terra, coprendosi la testa di cenere pregando tutti insieme il Dio d'Israele a di mostrare la sua misericordia verso il suo popolo.
5 And, taking up their arms of war, they set up positions at the places that lead along a narrow footpath between the mountains, and they guarded them all day and night.	5 E prendendo le loro armi si piantarono nei luoghi, i quali davan l'accesso ad angusti sentieri per mezzo ai monti; e li custodivano di giorno, e di notte.
6 Now Holofernes, while circling around, discovered that the fountain that flowed in to them, led directly through an aqueduct on the south side, beyond the city. And he instructed their aqueduct to be cut off.	6 Ma Oloferne mentre andava attorno girando osservò, che la fontana, la quale sboccava in città, vi era condotta per mezzo di un acquidotto, che era fuori dalla parte di mezzodì, e ordinò, che quell'acquidotto fosse tagliato.
7 Even so, there were springs not far from the walls, from which they were seen to draw water secretly, to refresh themselves a little rather than to drink their fill.	7 Eranvi nondimeno in poca distanza dalle mura delle sorgenti, dalle quali vedeansi attignere furtivamente dell'acqua più per ristorarsi, che per bere.
8 But the sons of Ammon and Moab approached Holofernes, saying: “The sons of Israel do not trust in their lances, nor in their arrows, but the mountains are their defense, and the steep hills and precipices constitute their fortifications.	8 Mai figliuoli di Jommon, e di Moab andarono, e dissero ad Oloferne: I figliuoli d'Israele ripongono la loro speranza non nelle loro lance, nè nelle loro frecce, ma loro difesa son le montagne, e i ripidi colli li rendono sicuri.
9 Therefore, so that you may be able to overcome them without joining battle, set guards at the springs so that they may not draw water from them, and you will put them to death without the sword, or at least, being weary, they will hand over their city, which they suppose to be, by its position in the mountains, unable to be conquered.”	9 Perchè adunque tu possa superarli senza venir alle mani, metti della gente a custodir le sorgenti, affinchè non ne attingano acqua, e gli ucciderai senza spada, o almeno non potendone più ti daran nelle mani la loro città creduta da essi inespugnabile per esser posta sui monti.
10 And these words were pleasing before Holofernes and before his attendants, and so he stationed a hundred men around every spring.	10 E Oloferme, e i suoi uffiziali approvarono queste parole, ed egli pose cento uomini di guardia intorno a ciascheduna sorgente.
11 And when they had kept this watch through twenty full days, the cisterns and collections of waters failed among all the inhabitants of Bethulia, so that there was within the city not enough to satisfy them for even one day, because water was given out to the people daily by measure.	11 Or dopo che per venti giorni vi furono state in tal guisa le guardie, vennero a mancare le cisterne e i serbatoi di acque a tutti gli abitanti di Betulia talmente che non vi era nella città abbastanza da dissetarsi per un sol giorno; imperocchè davasi di per dì alla gente l'acqua a misura.
12 Then, all the men and women, youths and little ones, gathering together before Uzziah, all with one voice together,	12 Allora si affollarono intorno ad Ozia tutti gli uomini, e le donne, e i giovani, e i ragazzi, e dissero ad una voce:
13 said: “May God be judge between us and you, for you have done evil with us, in not being willing to speak peacefully with the Assyrians, and because of this, God has sold us into their hands.	13 Sia giudice Dio tra noi, e te; perocchè tu ci hai fatti questi mali, non volendo trattare la pace cogli Assiri, e per questo Dio ci ha abbandonati nelle loro mani.
14 And therefore, there is no one to help us, while we are prostrated before their eyes with thirst and great destruction.	14 E per questo siamo privi di soccorso nel tempo, che sotto gli occhi loro siam prostrati a terra per la sete, e per la miseria grande.
15 And now, gather together all who are in the city, so that we may willingly deliver everyone of us to the people of Holofernes.	15 Su via convocate tutti quei, che si trovano nella città, e arrendiamoci volontariamente all'esercito di Oloferne.
16 For it is better that as captives, being alive, we should bless the Lord, than that we should die and become a disgrace to all flesh, after we have seen our wives and our children die before our eyes.	16 Perocchè è meglio,che prigionieri benediciamo il Signore, che perire, ed esser l'obbrobrio di tutti gli uomini, quando vedremo le nostre mogli, e i nostri bambini morire sotto gli occhi nostri.
17 We call to witness this day heaven and earth, and the God of our fathers, who takes vengeance upon us according to our sins, so that now you may deliver the city into the hand of the military of Holofernes. And may our end be brief, by the edge of the sword, that would be made longer by the dryness of thirst.”	17 Noi prendiamo oggi per testimoni il cielo, e la terra, e il Dio de' padri nostri, il quale ci punisce secondo i nostri peccati: rendete omai la città alle schiere di Oloferne, e il nostro penare sia breve sotto la spada, il quale ora è lungo oltre modo nell'arsura della sete.
18 And when they had said these things, there happened a great weeping and a loud lamentation within the assembly. From everyone and for many hours, with one voice, they cried out to God, saying:	18 E quando ebbero dette tali cose si levarono gran gemiti, e urli in tutta l'adunanza, e per molte ore ad una voce gridavano, e dicevano al Signore:
19 “We have sinned like our fathers, we have acted unjustly, we have committed iniquity.	19 Abbiam peccato noi, e i padri nostri, siamo stati ingiusti, abbiam commesso iniquità.
20 May you have mercy on us, for you are pious, or with your own scourges avenge our iniquities, but do not be willing to deliver those trusting in you to a people who are ignorant of you,	20 Tu, perchè se' pio, abbi misericordia di noi, o punisci co' tuoi flagelli le nostre iniquità, ma non abbandonare in potere di un popolo, che non ti conosce, coloro che ti onorano.
21 so that they may not say among the Gentiles, ‘Where is their God?’ ”	21 Affinchè tralle nazioni non abbia a dirsi: Dov'è il loro Dio?
22 And when, being weary from these outcries, and tired from these weepings, they became silent,	22 Or quando,stanchi di gridare, e di gemere, ebber fatto silenzio.
23 Uzziah, rising up covered in tears, said: “Be steadfast in soul, brothers, and let us wait these five days for mercy from the Lord.	23 Si letò Ozìa tutto bagnato di lacrime, e disse: Fratelli fatevi cuore, e aspettiamo ancora per cinque giorni la misericordia del Signore:
24 For perhaps he will break off his indignation and give glory to his own name.	24 Perocchè forse egli taglierà il corso all'ira sua, e glorificherà il suo nome:
25 But if, with five days passing, help does not arrive, we will accomplish the words that you have spoken.”	25 Che se passati i cinque giorni niun soccorso verrà, faremo come voi avete detto.
