1 But Holofernes, on another day, instructed his army to ascend against Bethulia.	1 Al día siguiente ordenó Holofernes a todo su ejército y a todos los pueblos que iban como tropas auxiliares mover el campo contra Betulia, ocupar los accesos de la montaña y comenzar las hostilidades contra los israelitas.
2 Moreover, there were one hundred and twenty thousand foot-soldiers, and twenty-two thousand horsemen, besides the contingents of those men who had been taken captive, and all the youths who had been abducted from the provinces and the cities.	2 El mismo día levantaron el campo todos los hombres de su ejército; el número de sus guerreros era de 120.000 infantes y 12.000 jinetes, sin contar los encargados del bagaje y la gran cantidad de hombres que iban a pie con ellos.
3 All these prepared themselves together to fight against the sons of Israel, and they came through the foothills of the mountain, even to the apex, which looks down upon Dothain, from the place which is called Belma, up to Chelmon, which is opposite Esdrelon.	3 Acamparon en el valle que hay cerca de Betulia, junto a la fuente, y se desplegaron en profundidad desde Dotán hasta Belbáin, y en longitud desde Betulia hasta Kiamón, que está frente a Esdrelón.
4 But the sons of Israel, when they saw the multitude of them, prostrated themselves upon the ground, scattering ashes over their heads, praying with one accord that the God of Israel would show his mercy upon his people.	4 Cuando los israelitas vieron su muchedumbre, quedaron sobrecogidos y se dijeron unos a otros: «Estos ahora van a arrasar toda la tierra y ni los montes más altos ni los barrancos ni las colinas podrán soportar su peso».
5 And, taking up their arms of war, they set up positions at the places that lead along a narrow footpath between the mountains, and they guarded them all day and night.	5 Tomó cada cual su equipo de guerra, encendieron hogueras en las torres y permanecieron sobre las armas toda aquella noche.
6 Now Holofernes, while circling around, discovered that the fountain that flowed in to them, led directly through an aqueduct on the south side, beyond the city. And he instructed their aqueduct to be cut off.	6 Al segundo día, Holofernes hizo desfilar toda su caballería ante los israelitas que había en Betulia.
7 Even so, there were springs not far from the walls, from which they were seen to draw water secretly, to refresh themselves a little rather than to drink their fill.	7 Inspeccionó todas las subidas de la ciudad, reconoció las fuentes y las ocupó, dejando en ellas guarniciones de soldados; y él se volvió donde su ejército.
8 But the sons of Ammon and Moab approached Holofernes, saying: “The sons of Israel do not trust in their lances, nor in their arrows, but the mountains are their defense, and the steep hills and precipices constitute their fortifications.	8 Se acercaron entonces a él los príncipes de los hijos de Esaú, todos los jefes de los moabitas y los generales del litoral, y le dijeron:
9 Therefore, so that you may be able to overcome them without joining battle, set guards at the springs so that they may not draw water from them, and you will put them to death without the sword, or at least, being weary, they will hand over their city, which they suppose to be, by its position in the mountains, unable to be conquered.”	9 «Que nuestro señor escuche una palabra y no habrá ni un solo herido en tu ejército.
10 And these words were pleasing before Holofernes and before his attendants, and so he stationed a hundred men around every spring.	10 Este pueblo de los israelitas no confía tanto en sus lanzas como en las alturas de los montes en que habitan. De hecho no es fácil escalar la cumbre de estos montes.
11 And when they had kept this watch through twenty full days, the cisterns and collections of waters failed among all the inhabitants of Bethulia, so that there was within the city not enough to satisfy them for even one day, because water was given out to the people daily by measure.	11 «Por eso, señor, no pelees contra ellos en el orden de batalla acostumbrado, para que no caiga ni un solo hombre de los tuyos.
12 Then, all the men and women, youths and little ones, gathering together before Uzziah, all with one voice together,	12 Quédate en el campamento y conserva todos los hombres de tu ejército. Que tus siervos se apoderen de la fuente que brota en la falda de la montaña,
13 said: “May God be judge between us and you, for you have done evil with us, in not being willing to speak peacefully with the Assyrians, and because of this, God has sold us into their hands.	13 porque de ella se abastecen todos los habitantes de Betulia. La sed los destruirá y tendrán que entregarte la ciudad. Nosotros y nuestro pueblo ocuparemos las alturas de los montes cercanos y acamparemos en ellas, vigilando para que no salga de la ciudad ni un solo hombre.
14 And therefore, there is no one to help us, while we are prostrated before their eyes with thirst and great destruction.	14 Ellos, sus mujeres y sus hijos, serán consumidos por el hambre y, aun antes de que la espada les alcance, caerán tendidos por las plazas de su ciudad.
15 And now, gather together all who are in the city, so that we may willingly deliver everyone of us to the people of Holofernes.	15 Entonces les impondrás un duro castigo por haberse rebelado y no haber salido a tu encuentro en son de paz».
16 For it is better that as captives, being alive, we should bless the Lord, than that we should die and become a disgrace to all flesh, after we have seen our wives and our children die before our eyes.	16 Parecieron bien estos consejos a Holofernes y a todos sus oficiales, y ordenó que se ejecutara lo que proponían.
17 We call to witness this day heaven and earth, and the God of our fathers, who takes vengeance upon us according to our sins, so that now you may deliver the city into the hand of the military of Holofernes. And may our end be brief, by the edge of the sword, that would be made longer by the dryness of thirst.”	17 Se puso en marcha el ejército moabita, reforzado por 5.000 asirios, acamparon en el valle y se apoderaron de los depósitos de agua y de las fuentes de los israelitas.
18 And when they had said these things, there happened a great weeping and a loud lamentation within the assembly. From everyone and for many hours, with one voice, they cried out to God, saying:	18 Los edomitas y ammonitas, por su parte, acamparon en el monte, frente a Dotán, y enviaron destacamentos hacia el sur y el este, frente a Egrebel, que está al lado de Jus, sobre el torrente Mojmur. El resto del ejército asirio quedó acampado en la llanura y cubría toda la superficie del suelo. Sus tiendas y bagajes formaban un campamento inmenso, porque eran una enorme muchedumbre.
19 “We have sinned like our fathers, we have acted unjustly, we have committed iniquity.	19 Clamaron los israelitas al Señor su Dios, pues su ánimo empezaba a flaquear, viendo que el enemigo les había cercado y cortado toda retirada.
20 May you have mercy on us, for you are pious, or with your own scourges avenge our iniquities, but do not be willing to deliver those trusting in you to a people who are ignorant of you,	20 34 días estuvieron cercados por todo el ejército asirio, infantes, carros y jinetes. A todos las habitantes de Betulia se les acabaron las reservas de agua;
21 so that they may not say among the Gentiles, ‘Where is their God?’ ”	21 las cisternas se agotaron; ni un solo día podían beber a satisfacción, porque se les daba el agua racionada.
22 And when, being weary from these outcries, and tired from these weepings, they became silent,	22 Los niños aparecían abatidos, las mujeres y los adolescentes desfallecían de sed y caían en las plazas y a las salidas de las puertas de la ciudad, faltos de fuerzas.
23 Uzziah, rising up covered in tears, said: “Be steadfast in soul, brothers, and let us wait these five days for mercy from the Lord.	23 Todo el pueblo, los adolescentes, las mujeres y los niños, se reunieron en torno a Ozías y a los jefes de la ciudad y clamaron a grandes voces, diciendo delante de los ancianos:
24 For perhaps he will break off his indignation and give glory to his own name.	24 «Juzgue Dios entre nosotros y vosotros, pues habéis cometido una gran injusticia contra nosotros, por no haber hecho tentativas de paz con los asirios.
25 But if, with five days passing, help does not arrive, we will accomplish the words that you have spoken.”	25 Y ahora no hay nadie que pueda valernos. Dios nos ha vendido en sus manos, para sucumbir ante ellos de sed y destrucción total.
	26 Llamadles ahora mismo y entregad toda la ciudad al saqueo de la gente de Holofernes y de todo su ejército.
	27 Mejor nos es convertirnos en botín suyo. Seremos sus esclavos, pero salvaremos la vida y no tendremos que ver cómo, a nuestros ojos, se mueren nuestros niños y expiran nuestras mujeres y nuestros hijos.
	28 Os conjuramos por el cielo y por la tierra, y por nuestro Dios, Señor de nuestros padres, que nos ha castigado por nuestros pecados, y por los pecados de nuestros padres, que cumpláis ahora mismo nuestros deseos».
	29 Y toda la asamblea, a una, prorrumpió en gran llanto y clamaron, a grandes voces, al Señor Dios.
	30 Ozías les dijo: «Tened confianza, hermanos; resistamos aún cinco días, y en este tiempo el Señor Dios nuestro volverá su compasión hacia nosotros, porque no nos ha de abandonar por siempre.
	31 Pero si pasan estos días sin recibir ayuda cumpliré vuestros deseos».
	32 Y despidió a la gente, cada cual a su puesto. Los hombres fueron a las murallas y torres de la ciudad, y a las mujeres y niños los enviaron a casa. Había en la ciudad un gran abatimiento.
