1 But afterwards, he heard the words of the sons of Laban, saying, “Jacob has taken all that was our father’s, and being enlarged by his ability, he has become famous.”	1 Ma dopo che ebbe udite le parole dei figliuoli di Laban, che dicevano: Giacobbe ha usurpato tutto quello che era di nostro padre, e dei beni di lui si è fatto ricco signore:
2 Likewise, he observed that Laban’s face was not the same toward him as it was yesterday and the day before.	2 Osservò ancora, che Laban non lo guardava collo stesso occhio, che per lo passato,
3 Most importantly, the Lord was saying to him, “Return to the land of your fathers and to your generation, and I will be with you.”	3 Dicendogli di più il Signore: Torna alla terra de' padri tuoi, e a' tuoi parenti, e io sarò teco.
4 He sent and called for Rachel and Leah, in the field where he pastured the flocks,	4 Fece venire Rachele e Lia al campo, dove ei pasceva i greggi,
5 and he said to them: “I see that your father’s face is not the same toward me as it was yesterday and the day before. But the God of my father has been with me.	5 E disse loro: Io veggo, che il padre vostro non mi guarda collo stesso occhio, che per lo passato: ma il Dio di mio padre è stato con me.
6 And you know that I have served your father with all my strength.	6 E voi sapete, come con tutto il mio potere ho servito al padre vostro.
7 Even so, your father has circumvented me, and he has changed my wages ten times. And yet God has not permitted him to harm me.	7 Ma il padre vostro mi gabbò, e ha mutato dieci volte la mia mercede: e con tutto questo Dio non ha permesso, ch'ei mi facesse del male.
8 Whenever he said, ‘The speckled will be your wages,’ all the sheep gave birth to speckled newborns. Yet truly, when he said the contrary, ‘You will take whatever is white for your wages,’ all the flocks gave birth to white ones.	8 Se una volta disse: Quelli di color vario saranno la tua mercede, le pecore figliavano tutte agnelli chiazzati: quando per lo contrario egli disse: Tu prenderai per tuo salario tutti i bianchi, tutti i greggi figliavano agnelli bianchi.
9 And it is God who has taken your father’s substance and given it to me.	9 E Dio ha prese le facoltà del padre vostro, e le ha date a me.
10 For after the time had arrived for the ewes to conceive, I lifted up my eyes, and I saw in my sleep that the males climbing on the females were of variegated, and spotted, and diverse colors.	10 Imperocché quando fu venuto il tempo, in cui le pecore dovean concepire, io alzai gli occhi miei, e vidi dormendo i maschi pezzati, e macchiati, e di colori diversi, i quali coprivano le femmine.
11 And the Angel of God said to me in my sleep, ‘Jacob.’ And I responded, ‘Here I am.’	11 E l'Angelo di Dio mi disse in sogno: Giacobbe? E io risposi: Eccomi qui.
12 And he said: ‘Lift up your eyes, and see that all the males climbing on the females are variegated, spotted, and also speckled. For I have seen all that Laban has done to you.	12 Ed egli disse: Alza gli occhi tuoi, e mira i maschi tutti, che cuopron le femmine, pezzati, e macchiati, e di vario colore: perocché io ho veduto tutto quello che ha fatto a te Laban.
13 I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the stone and made a vow to me. Now therefore arise, and depart from this land, returning to the land of your nativity.’ ”	13 Io sono il Dio di Bethel, dove tu ungesti la pietra, e facesti a me il voto. Adesso adunque levati, e parti da questa terra per tornare alla terra dove sei nato.
14 And Rachel and Leah responded: “Have we anything left behind among the resources and inheritance of our father’s house?	14 Rachele e Lia risposero: Riman egli forse qualche cosa per noi delle facoltà, e dell'eredità della casa di nostro padre?
15 Has he not considered us as foreigners, and sold us, and consumed our price?	15 Non ci ha egli riguardate come straniere, e ci ha vendute, e ha mangiato il prezzo, che di noi ha ritratto?
16 But God has taken our father’s riches and handed these to us and to our sons. Therefore, do all that God has instructed you.”	16 Ma Dio ha prese le ricchezze di nostro padre, e le ha date a noi, e a' nostri figliuoli: fa' adunque tutto quello che Dio ti ha comandato.
17 And so Jacob rose up, and having placed the children and his wives upon camels, he went forth.	17 Si ammannì adunque Giacobbe, e messi i figliuoli, e le mogli sopra i cammelli, se ne partì.
18 And he took all his substance and flocks, and whatever he had acquired in Mesopotamia, and he journeyed to his father Isaac, in the land of Canaan.	18 E prese tutto il suo, e i greggi, e tutto quello che avea guadagnato nella Mesopotamia, incamminandosi verso suo padre Isacco alla terra di Chanaan.
19 At that time, Laban had gone to shear the sheep, and so Rachel stole her father’s idols.	19 Laban in quel tempo era andato a tosare le pecore, e Rachele rubò gl'idoli di suo padre.
20 And Jacob was not willing to confess to his father-in-law that he was fleeing.	20 E Giacobbe non volle accusare a Laban la sua fuga.
21 And when he had gone away with all such things that were justly his, and, having crossed the river, was continuing on toward Mount Gilead,	21 E partito ch'ei fu con tutto quello che a lui apparteneva, mentre passato il fiume (Eufrate) si avanzava verso il monte Galaad,
22 it was reported to Laban on the third day that Jacob had fled.	22 Fu portato avviso a Laban il terzo giorno, che Giacobbe fuggiva.
23 And taking his brothers with him, he pursued him for seven days. And he overtook him at Mount Gilead.	23 Ed egli, presi seco i suoi fratelli, lo seguitò per sette giorni, e lo raggiunse sul monte di Galaad.
24 And he saw in a dream, God saying to him, “Beware that you not speak anything harsh against Jacob.”	24 E vide in sogno Dio, che gli disse: Guardati dal dire una torta parola contro Giacobbe.
25 And now Jacob had pitched his tent at the mountain. And when he, with his brothers, had overtaken him, he set his tent at the same place at Mount Gilead.	25 E Giacobbe avea già teso il suo padiglione sul monte: e sopraggiunto Laban co' suoi fratelli, la sua tenda piantò sullo stesso monte di Galaad.
26 And he said to Jacob: “Why have you acted this way, departing from me in secret, with my daughters like captives of the sword?	26 E disse a Giacobbe: Per qual motivo hai operato in tal guisa, menando via le mie figlie senza mia saputa, come prigioniere di guerra?
27 Why would you want to flee without my knowledge and without telling me, though I might have led you forward with gladness, and songs, and timbrels, and lyres?	27 Perché hai tu voluto fuggire senza ch'io lo sapessi, e non anzi avvertirmi, affinché ti accompagnassi con festa, e cantici, e timpani, e cetre?
28 You have not permitted me to kiss my sons and daughters. You have acted foolishly. And now, indeed,	28 Non mi hai permesso di dare un bacio a' miei figliuoli, e alle mie figlie: ti sei portato da stolto: e certamente adesso
29 my hand has power to repay you with harm. But the God of your father said to me yesterday, ‘Beware that you not speak anything stern against Jacob.’	29 È in poter mio farti pagar il fio. Ma il Dio del padre vostro ieri mi disse: Guardati dal parlare con asprezza contro Giacobbe.
30 It may be that you desired to go to your own, and that you longed for the house of your father. But why have you stolen my gods?”	30 Tu desideravi di andartene a trovare i tuoi, e ti stimolava il desiderio della casa paterna, ti si conceda: perché mi hai rubati i miei dei?
31 Jacob answered: “I set out, unknown to you, because I feared that you might take away your daughters by violence.	31 Rispose Giacobbe: Quanto all'essere partito senza tua saputa, io temei, che non mi togliessi per forza le tue figlie.
32 But, since you accuse me of theft, with whomever you will find your gods, let him be slain in the sight of our brothers. Search; anything of yours that you will find with me, take it away.” Now when he said this, he did not know that Rachel had stolen the idols.	32 Quanto poi al furto, di cui mi riconvieni; chiunque sia colui, presso del quale ritroverai i tuoi dei, sia messo a morte alla presenza de' tuoi fratelli: fa' le tue ricerche: tutto quello che troverai di tuo presso di me, prendilo pure. Dicendo questo, egli ignorava, che Rachele avesse rubato gl'idoli.
33 And so Laban, entering the tent of Jacob, and of Leah, and of both the handmaids, did not find them. And when he had entered the tent of Rachel,	33 Entrato adunque Laban nella tenda di Giacobbe e di Lia, e dell'una e dell'altra schiava, niente trovò. Ma entrando egli nella tenda di Rachele,
34 she quickly hid the idols under the camel’s bedding, and she sat upon them. And when he had searched the entire tent and found nothing,	34 Nascose ella con fretta gl'idoli sotto il basto di un cammello, e vi si pose sopra a sedere: e rifrustando egli tutta la tenda senza trovarli,
35 she said: “Do not be angry, my lord, that I am unable to rise up in your sight, because it has now happened to me according to the custom of women.” So his careful search was thwarted.	35 Ella disse: Non prenda in mala parte il signor mio, se io non posso alzarmi alla tua presenza: perocché ho adesso il solito incomodo delle donne: così fu delusa l'ansietà del cercatore.
36 And Jacob, being inflated, said with contention: “For which fault of mine, or for what sin of mine, have you become so enraged against me	36 E Giacobbe sdegnato disse con agre rampogne: Per qual mia colpa, o per qual mio peccato mi hai tenuto dietro con tanto calore,
37 and searched all the items of my house? What have you found from all the substance of your house? Place it here before my brothers, and your brothers, and let them judge between me and you.	37 E hai rifrustato tutta la mia suppellettile? Che hai tu trovato di roba della tua casa? ponla qui alla presenza de' fratelli miei, e de' tuoi fratelli, ed ei sieno giudici tra me, e te.
38 For what reason have I been with you for twenty years? Your ewes and she-goats were not barren; the rams of your flocks I did not consume.	38 Stetti io per questo venti anni teco? Le tue pecore, e le tue capre non furono sterili; io non mangiai gli arieti del tuo gregge:
39 Neither did I reveal to you what was seized by the wild beast. I replaced all that was damaged. Whatever was lost by theft, you collected it from me.	39 Né io ti facea vedere quelle che avea rapito una fiera; io pagava tutto il danno: tu esigevi da me tutto quel che era rubato:
40 Day and night, I was burned by heat and by frost, and sleep fled from my eyes.	40 Dì, e notte io era arso dal caldo, e dal gelo, e fuggiva il sonno dagli occhi miei.
41 And in this way, for twenty years, I have served you in your house: fourteen for your daughters, and six for your flocks. You have also changed my wages ten times.	41 E in tal guisa a te servìi per venti anni in tua casa, quattordici per le figliuole, e sei pe' tuoi greggi: tu pur cangiasti la mia mercede per dieci volte.
42 If the God of my father Abraham and the fear of Isaac had not been close to me, perhaps by now you would have sent me away naked. But God looked kindly on my affliction and the labor of my hands, and he rebuked you yesterday.”	42 Se Il Dio del padre mio Abramo, e colui, che è temuto da Isacco, non mi avesse assistito, mi avresti forse adesso rimandato ignudo: Dio ha mirato la mia afflizione, e la fatica delle mie mani, e ieri ti sgridò.
43 Laban answered him: “My daughters and sons, and your flocks, and all that you discern are mine. What can I do to my sons and grandchildren?	43 Rispose a lui Laban: Le mie figliuole, e i figliuoli, e greggi tuoi, e quanto tu vedi, son cosa mia: che posso io fare contro de' figli, o sia nipoti miei?
44 Come, therefore, let us enter into a pact, so that it may be a testimony between me and you.”	44 Vieni adunque, e contraiamo alleanza, la quale serva di testimonianza tra me e te.
45 And so Jacob took a stone, and he set it up as a memorial.	45 Prese adunque Giacobbe una pietra, e la eresse in monumento:
46 And he said to his brothers, “Bring stones.” And they, gathering together stones, made a tomb, and they ate upon it.	46 E disse a' suoi fratelli: Portate pietre. E quelli, raunatele, ne fecero un monticello, sopra del quale mangiarono.
47 And Laban called it, ‘Tomb of Witness,’ and Jacob, ‘Pile of Testimony;’ each of them according to the fitness of his own language.	47 E Laban chiamollo il Monticello del testimone, e Giacobbe il Monticello della testimonianza, ciascheduno secondo la proprietà del suo linguaggio.
48 And Laban said: “This tomb will be a witness between me and you this day.” (And for this reason, its name has been called Gilead, that is, ‘Tomb of Witness.’)	48 E Laban disse: Questo monticello sarà oggi testimone tra me e te; e per questo fu dato a quel monticello il nome di Galaad, cioè Monticello del testimone.
49 “May the Lord consider and judge between us, when we will have withdrawn from one another.	49 Il Signore ponga mente, e sia giudice tra di noi, quando ci sarem dipartiti l'uno dall'altro.
50 If you afflict my daughters, and if you bring in other wives over them, no one is a witness of our words except God, who understands beforehand.”	50 Se tu farai oltraggio alle mie figliuole, e se oltre di esse prenderai altre mogli: nissuno è testimone delle nostre parole eccetto Dio, il qual presente ci mira.
51 And again he said to Jacob. “Lo, this tomb and the stone that I have set up between me and you,	51 E di poi disse a Giacobbe: Ecco il monticello, e la pietra, che io ho eretta tra me e te,
52 will be a witness. This tomb,” I say, “and the stone, they are for testimony, in case either I cross beyond it going toward you, or you cross beyond it thinking to harm me.	52 Sarà testimone: questo monticello, io dico, e questa pietra rendan testimonianza, se io l'oltrepasserò istradandomi verso di te, o se tu l'oltrepasserai con intenzione cattiva contro di me.
53 May the God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us.” Therefore, Jacob swore by the fear of his father Isaac.	53 Il Dio d'Abramo, e il Dio di Nachor, il Dio del padre loro sia giudice tra di noi. Giurò adunque Giacobbe per lui, che Isacco suo padre temeva:
54 And after he had immolated sacrifices on the mountain, he called his brothers to eat bread. And when they had eaten, they lodged there.	54 E immolate sul monte le vittime, invitò i suoi fratelli a mangiare del pane. E quelli mangiato che l'ebbero, ivi si fermarono.
55 In truth, Laban rose up in the night, and he kissed his sons and daughters, and he blessed them. And he returned to his place.	55 Quindi Laban alzatosi, che era ancor notte, baciò i figliuoli, e le figlie sue, e li benedisse, e tornossene a casa sua.
