Genesis 31

1 But afterwards, he heard the words of the sons of Laban, saying, “Jacob has taken all that was our father’s, and being enlarged by his ability, he has become famous.”	1 Jacob apprit que les fils de Laban disaient: "Jacob a pris tout ce qui était à notre père et c'est auxdépens de notre père qu'il a constitué toute cette richesse."
2 Likewise, he observed that Laban’s face was not the same toward him as it was yesterday and the day before.	2 Jacob vit à la mine de Laban qu'il n'était plus avec lui comme auparavant.
3 Most importantly, the Lord was saying to him, “Return to the land of your fathers and to your generation, and I will be with you.”	3 Yahvé dit à Jacob: "Retourne au pays de tes pères, dans ta patrie, et je serai avec toi."
4 He sent and called for Rachel and Leah, in the field where he pastured the flocks,	4 Jacob fit appeler Rachel et Léa aux champs où étaient ses troupeaux,
5 and he said to them: “I see that your father’s face is not the same toward me as it was yesterday and the day before. But the God of my father has been with me.	5 et il leur dit: "Je vois à la mine de votre père qu'il n'est plus à mon égard comme auparavant, maisle Dieu de mon père a été avec moi.
6 And you know that I have served your father with all my strength.	6 Vous savez vous-mêmes que j'ai servi votre père de toutes mes forces.
7 Even so, your father has circumvented me, and he has changed my wages ten times. And yet God has not permitted him to harm me.	7 Votre père s'est joué de moi, il a changé dix fois mon salaire, mais Dieu ne lui a pas permis de mefaire du tort.
8 Whenever he said, ‘The speckled will be your wages,’ all the sheep gave birth to speckled newborns. Yet truly, when he said the contrary, ‘You will take whatever is white for your wages,’ all the flocks gave birth to white ones.	8 Chaque fois qu'il disait: Ce qui est moucheté sera ton salaire, toutes les bêtes mettaient bas despetits mouchetés; chaque fois qu'il disait: Ce qui est rayé sera ton salaire, toutes les bêtes mettaient bas des petitsrayés,
9 And it is God who has taken your father’s substance and given it to me.	9 et Dieu a enlevé son bétail à votre père et me l'a donné.
10 For after the time had arrived for the ewes to conceive, I lifted up my eyes, and I saw in my sleep that the males climbing on the females were of variegated, and spotted, and diverse colors.	10 Il arriva, au temps où les bêtes entrent en chaleur, que je levai les yeux et je vis en songe que lesboucs en passe de saillir les bêtes étaient rayés, tachetés ou tavelés.
11 And the Angel of God said to me in my sleep, ‘Jacob.’ And I responded, ‘Here I am.’	11 L'Ange de Dieu me dit en songe: Jacob, et je répondis: Oui.
12 And he said: ‘Lift up your eyes, and see that all the males climbing on the females are variegated, spotted, and also speckled. For I have seen all that Laban has done to you.	12 Il dit: Lève les yeux et vois: tous les boucs qui saillissent les bêtes sont rayés, tachetés ou tavelés,car j'ai vu tout ce que Laban te fait.
13 I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the stone and made a vow to me. Now therefore arise, and depart from this land, returning to the land of your nativity.’ ”	13 Je suis le Dieu qui t'est apparu à Béthel, où tu as oint une stèle et où tu m'as fait un vœu.Maintenant debout, sors de ce pays et retourne dans ta patrie."
14 And Rachel and Leah responded: “Have we anything left behind among the resources and inheritance of our father’s house?	14 Rachel et Léa lui répondirent ainsi: "Avons-nous encore une part et un héritage dans la maison denotre père?
15 Has he not considered us as foreigners, and sold us, and consumed our price?	15 Ne sommes-nous pas considérées par lui comme des étrangères, puisqu'il nous a vendues et qu'il aensuite mangé notre argent?
16 But God has taken our father’s riches and handed these to us and to our sons. Therefore, do all that God has instructed you.”	16 Oui, toute la richesse que Dieu a retirée à notre père est à nous et à nos enfants. Fais doncmaintenant tout ce que Dieu t'a dit."
17 And so Jacob rose up, and having placed the children and his wives upon camels, he went forth.	17 Jacob se leva, fit monter ses enfants et ses femmes sur des chameaux,
18 And he took all his substance and flocks, and whatever he had acquired in Mesopotamia, and he journeyed to his father Isaac, in the land of Canaan.	18 et poussa devant lui tout son bétail, -- avec tous les biens qu'il avait acquis, le bétail qui luiappartenait et qu'il avait acquis en Paddân-Aram, -- pour aller chez son père Isaac, au pays de Canaan.
19 At that time, Laban had gone to shear the sheep, and so Rachel stole her father’s idols.	19 Laban était allé tondre son troupeau et Rachel déroba les idoles domestiques qui étaient à sonpère.
20 And Jacob was not willing to confess to his father-in-law that he was fleeing.	20 Jacob abusa l'esprit de Laban l'Araméen en ne lui laissant pas soupçonner qu'il fuyait.
21 And when he had gone away with all such things that were justly his, and, having crossed the river, was continuing on toward Mount Gilead,	21 Il s'enfuit avec tout ce qu'il avait, il partit, passa le Fleuve et se dirigea vers le mont Galaad.
22 it was reported to Laban on the third day that Jacob had fled.	22 Le troisième jour, on apprit à Laban que Jacob s'était enfui.
23 And taking his brothers with him, he pursued him for seven days. And he overtook him at Mount Gilead.	23 Il prit ses frères avec lui, le poursuivit sept jours de chemin et l'atteignit au mont Galaad.
24 And he saw in a dream, God saying to him, “Beware that you not speak anything harsh against Jacob.”	24 Dieu visita Laban l'Araméen dans une vision nocturne et lui dit: "Garde-toi de dire à Jacob quoique ce soit."
25 And now Jacob had pitched his tent at the mountain. And when he, with his brothers, had overtaken him, he set his tent at the same place at Mount Gilead.	25 Laban rejoignit Jacob qui avait planté sa tente dans la montagne, et Laban planta sa tente au montGalaad.
26 And he said to Jacob: “Why have you acted this way, departing from me in secret, with my daughters like captives of the sword?	26 Laban dit à Jacob: "Qu'as-tu fait d'abuser mon esprit et d'emmener mes filles comme des captivesde guerre?
27 Why would you want to flee without my knowledge and without telling me, though I might have led you forward with gladness, and songs, and timbrels, and lyres?	27 Pourquoi as-tu fui en secret et m'as-tu abusé au lieu de m'avertir, pour que je te reconduise dansl'allégresse et les chants, avec tambourins et lyres?
28 You have not permitted me to kiss my sons and daughters. You have acted foolishly. And now, indeed,	28 Tu ne m'as pas laissé embrasser mes fils et mes filles. Vraiment, tu as agi en insensé!
29 my hand has power to repay you with harm. But the God of your father said to me yesterday, ‘Beware that you not speak anything stern against Jacob.’	29 Il serait en mon pouvoir de te faire du mal, mais le Dieu de ton père, la nuit passée, m'a dit ceci:Garde-toi de dire à Jacob quoi que ce soit.
30 It may be that you desired to go to your own, and that you longed for the house of your father. But why have you stolen my gods?”	30 Maintenant, tu es donc parti, parce que tu languissais tellement après la maison de ton père! Maispourquoi as-tu volé mes dieux?"
31 Jacob answered: “I set out, unknown to you, because I feared that you might take away your daughters by violence.	31 Jacob répondit ainsi à Laban: "J'ai eu peur, je me suis dit que tu allais m'enlever tes filles.
32 But, since you accuse me of theft, with whomever you will find your gods, let him be slain in the sight of our brothers. Search; anything of yours that you will find with me, take it away.” Now when he said this, he did not know that Rachel had stolen the idols.	32 Mais celui chez qui tu trouveras tes dieux ne restera pas vivant: devant nos frères, reconnais cequi est à toi chez moi, et prends-le." Jacob ignorait en effet que Rachel les avait dérobés.
33 And so Laban, entering the tent of Jacob, and of Leah, and of both the handmaids, did not find them. And when he had entered the tent of Rachel,	33 Laban alla chercher dans la tente de Jacob, puis dans la tente de Léa, puis dans la tente des deuxservantes, et il ne trouva rien. Il sortit de la tente de Léa et entra dans celle de Rachel.
34 she quickly hid the idols under the camel’s bedding, and she sat upon them. And when he had searched the entire tent and found nothing,	34 Or Rachel avait pris les idoles domestiques, les avait mises dans le palanquin du chameau ets'était assise dessus; Laban fouilla toute la tente et ne trouva rien.
35 she said: “Do not be angry, my lord, that I am unable to rise up in your sight, because it has now happened to me according to the custom of women.” So his careful search was thwarted.	35 Rachel dit à son père: "Que Monseigneur ne voie pas avec colère que je ne puisse me lever en taprésence, car j'ai ce qui est coutumier aux femmes." Laban chercha et ne trouva pas les idoles.
36 And Jacob, being inflated, said with contention: “For which fault of mine, or for what sin of mine, have you become so enraged against me	36 Jacob se mit en colère et prit à partie Laban. Et Jacob adressa ainsi la parole à Laban: "Quel estmon crime, quelle est ma faute, que tu te sois acharné après moi?
37 and searched all the items of my house? What have you found from all the substance of your house? Place it here before my brothers, and your brothers, and let them judge between me and you.	37 Tu as fouillé toutes mes affaires: as-tu rien trouvé de toutes les affaires de ta maison? Produis-leici, devant mes frères et tes frères, et qu'ils jugent entre nous deux!
38 For what reason have I been with you for twenty years? Your ewes and she-goats were not barren; the rams of your flocks I did not consume.	38 Voici vingt ans que je suis chez toi, tes brebis et tes chèvres n'ont pas avorté et je n'ai pas mangéles béliers de ton troupeau.
39 Neither did I reveal to you what was seized by the wild beast. I replaced all that was damaged. Whatever was lost by theft, you collected it from me.	39 Les animaux déchirés par les fauves, je ne les rapportais pas, c'était moi qui compensais leurperte; tu me les réclamais, que j'aie été volé de jour ou que j'aie été volé de nuit.
40 Day and night, I was burned by heat and by frost, and sleep fled from my eyes.	40 J'ai été dévoré par la chaleur pendant le jour, par le froid pendant la nuit, et le sommeil a fui mesyeux.
41 And in this way, for twenty years, I have served you in your house: fourteen for your daughters, and six for your flocks. You have also changed my wages ten times.	41 Voici vingt ans que je suis dans ta maison: je t'ai servi quatorze ans pour tes deux filles et six anspour ton troupeau, et tu as changé dix fois mon salaire.
42 If the God of my father Abraham and the fear of Isaac had not been close to me, perhaps by now you would have sent me away naked. But God looked kindly on my affliction and the labor of my hands, and he rebuked you yesterday.”	42 Si le Dieu de mon père, le Dieu d'Abraham, le Parent d'Isaac, n'avait pas été avec moi, tu m'auraisrenvoyé les mains vides. Mais Dieu a vu mes fatigues et le labeur de mes bras et, la nuit passée, il a rendu sonjugement."
43 Laban answered him: “My daughters and sons, and your flocks, and all that you discern are mine. What can I do to my sons and grandchildren?	43 Laban répondit ainsi à Jacob: "Ces filles sont mes filles, ces enfants sont mes enfants, ce bétail estmon bétail, tout ce que tu vois est à moi. Mais que pourrais-je faire aujourd'hui à mes filles que voici et auxenfants qu'elles ont mis au monde?
44 Come, therefore, let us enter into a pact, so that it may be a testimony between me and you.”	44 Allons, concluons un traité, moi et toi..., et que cela serve de témoin entre moi et toi."
45 And so Jacob took a stone, and he set it up as a memorial.	45 Alors Jacob prit une pierre et la dressa comme une stèle.
46 And he said to his brothers, “Bring stones.” And they, gathering together stones, made a tomb, and they ate upon it.	46 Et Jacob dit à ses frères: "Ramassez des pierres." Ils ramassèrent des pierres et en firent unmonceau et ils mangèrent là, sur le monceau.
47 And Laban called it, ‘Tomb of Witness,’ and Jacob, ‘Pile of Testimony;’ each of them according to the fitness of his own language.	47 Laban le nomma Yegar Sahadûta et Jacob le nomma Galéed.
48 And Laban said: “This tomb will be a witness between me and you this day.” (And for this reason, its name has been called Gilead, that is, ‘Tomb of Witness.’)	48 Laban dit: "Que ce monceau soit aujourd'hui un témoin entre moi et toi." C'est pourquoi il lenomma Galéed,
49 “May the Lord consider and judge between us, when we will have withdrawn from one another.	49 et Miçpa, parce qu'il dit: "Que Yahvé soit un guetteur entre moi et toi, quand nous ne serons plusen vue l'un de l'autre.
50 If you afflict my daughters, and if you bring in other wives over them, no one is a witness of our words except God, who understands beforehand.”	50 Si tu maltraites mes filles ou si tu prends d'autres femmes en sus de mes filles, et que personne nesoit avec nous, vois:Dieu est témoin entre moi et toi."
51 And again he said to Jacob. “Lo, this tomb and the stone that I have set up between me and you,	51 Et Laban dit à Jacob: "Voici ce monceau que j'ai entassé entre moi et toi, et voici la stèle.
52 will be a witness. This tomb,” I say, “and the stone, they are for testimony, in case either I cross beyond it going toward you, or you cross beyond it thinking to harm me.	52 Ce monceau est témoin, la stèle est témoin, que moi je ne dois pas dépasser ce monceau vers toi etque toi tu ne dois pas dépasser ce monceau et cette stèle, vers moi, avec de mauvaises intentions.
53 May the God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us.” Therefore, Jacob swore by the fear of his father Isaac.	53 Que le Dieu d'Abraham et le Dieu de Nahor jugent entre nous."Et Jacob prêta serment par leParent d'Isaac, son père.
54 And after he had immolated sacrifices on the mountain, he called his brothers to eat bread. And when they had eaten, they lodged there.	54 Jacob fit un sacrifice sur la montagne et invita ses frères au repas. Ils prirent le repas et passèrentla nuit sur la montagne.
55 In truth, Laban rose up in the night, and he kissed his sons and daughters, and he blessed them. And he returned to his place.
