1 Passing through Amphipolis and Apol onia, they eventual y reached Thessalonica, where there was aJewish synagogue.	1 Toccando poi Anfipoli e Apollonia, arrivarono a Tessalonica, dove c’era una sinagoga ebraica.
2 Paul as usual went in and for three consecutive Sabbaths developed the arguments from scripture forthem,	2 Secondo le sue abitudini, Paolo vi si recò e per tre sabati consecutivi discusse con loro traendo argomento dalle Scritture.
3 explaining and proving how it was ordained that the Christ should suffer and rise from the dead. 'Andthe Christ', he said, 'is this Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you.'	3 Le spiegava e allegava a provare che era necessario che il Messia soffrisse e poi risuscitasse da morte, concludendo: «È questi il Messia, quel Gesù che io vi sto annunziando».
4 Some of them were convinced and joined Paul and Silas, and so did a great many godfearing peopleand Greeks, as wel as a number of the leading women.	4 Alcuni di essi sì lasciarono persuadere e guadagnare da Paolo e Sila, insieme con un bel numero di pagani credenti in Dio e non poche delle dame dell’alta società.
5 The Jews, ful of resentment, enlisted the help of a gang from the market place, stirred up a crowd, andsoon had the whole city in an uproar. They made for Jason's house, hoping to bring them before the People'sAssembly;	5 Ma i Giudei ingelositi, con l’aiuto di alcuni scellerati della piazza, organizzarono una dimostrazione e misero in subbuglio la città, poi fattisi sotto la casa di Giasone cercavano Paolo e Sila per condurli all’assemblea del popolo.
6 however, they found only Jason and some of the brothers, and these they dragged before the citycouncil, shouting, 'The people who have been turning the whole world upside down have come here now;	6 Non trovatili, trascinarono Giasone e alcuni fratelli dai politarchi, gridando: «Codesti sovvertitori del mondo sono arrivati anche qui
7 they have been staying at Jason's. They have broken Caesar's edicts by claiming that there is anotherking, Jesus.'	7 e sono ospiti di Giasone. È tutta gente che agisce contro i decreti imperiali, perché dicono che c’è un altro imperatore, Gesù».
8 Hearing this, the citizens and the city council ors were alarmed,	8 Con tali parole riuscirono a incitar la folla e i politarchi,
9 and they made Jason and the rest give security before setting them free.	9 ma questi, ricevuta una garanzia da Giasone e dagli altri fratelli, li rilasciarono.
10 When it was dark the brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away to Beroea, where they went tothe Jewish synagogue as soon as they arrived.	10 La stessa notte però i fratelli fecero partire Paolo e Sila per Berea, ed essi, appena arrivati, si recarono nella sinagoga ebraica.
11 Here the Jews were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they welcomed the wordvery readily; every day they studied the scriptures to check whether it was true.	11 I Giudei di qui erano di idee più larghe di quelli di Tessalonica, tant'è vero che accolsero la parola con entusiasmo, anzi ogni giorno esaminavano sulla Scrittura se così stavano le cose.
12 Many of them became believers, and so did many Greek women of high standing and a number ofthe men.	12 Così abbracciarono la fede molti di loro, e inoltre non poche distinte signore pagane e anche uomini.
13 When the Jews of Thessalonica came to learn that the word of God was being preached by Paul inBeroea as wel , they went there to make trouble and stir up the people.	13 Ma appena gli Ebrei di Tessalonica vennero a sapere che anche a Berea era stato annunziato da Paolo l’evangelo, si portarono anche lì per agitare e sommuovere la cittadinanza.
14 So the brothers arranged for Paul to go immediately as far as the coast, leaving Silas and Timothybehind.	14 Stavolta però i fratelli fecero andar subito Paolo, perché continuasse il viaggio, fino al mare, e là restarono solo Sila e Timoteo.
15 Paul's escort took him as far as Athens, and went back with instructions for Silas and Timothy torejoin Paul as soon as they could.	15 Gli accompagnatori di Paolo lo condussero fino ad Atene, poi ne ripartirono con l’incarico di dire a Sila e Timoteo di raggiungerlo al più presto in quella città.
16 Paul waited for them in Athens and there his whole soul was revolted at the sight of a city given overto idolatry.	16 Ad Atene, nell’attesa dei due, Paolo sentiva nell’animo uno sdegno profondo all’osservare che la città era piena di idoli.
17 In the synagogue he debated with the Jews and the godfearing, and in the market place he debatedevery day with anyone whom he met.	17 Passava perciò il tempo a discutere in sinagoga con gli Ebrei e con i credenti in Dio e nell’agorà tutti i giorni con chi gli capitava.
18 Even a few Epicurean and Stoic philosophers argued with him. Some said, 'What can this parrotmean?' And, because he was preaching about Jesus and Resurrection, others said, 'He seems to be apropagandist for some outlandish gods.'	18 Anche alcuni filosofi epicurei e stoici discutevano con lui, mentre altri dicevano: «Che cosa saprebbe dire codesto semi-analfabeta?» Altri invece, sentendolo annunziare Gesù e la risurrezione, dicevano: «Sembrerebbe un predicatore di divinità esotiche!»
19 They got him to accompany them to the Areopagus, where they said to him, 'Can we know what thisnew doctrine is that you are teaching?	19 Allora lo presero e lo condussero innanzi all’areopago e lo interrogarono: «Potremmo sapere qual è la dottrina nuova che vai insegnando ?
20 Some of the things you say seemed startling to us and we would like to find out what they mean.'	20 Dal momento che tu ci annunzi cose strane, vogliamo sapere di che si tratta».
21 The one amusement the Athenians and the foreigners living there seem to have is to discuss andlisten to the latest ideas.	21 Gli Ateniesi in genere e gli stranieri ivi residenti a ogni altro passatempo preferivano questo: dire e ascoltare le ultime novità.
22 So Paul stood before the whole council of the Areopagus and made this speech: 'Men of Athens, Ihave seen for myself how extremely scrupulous you are in all religious matters,	22 Paolo quindi, ritto in mezzo all’areopago, cominciò: «Ateniesi! Vedo in voi un gran timore degli dèi.
23 because, as I strol ed round looking at your sacred monuments, I noticed among other things an altarinscribed: To An Unknown God. In fact, the unknown God you revere is the one I proclaim to you.	23 Passando infatti e osservando i vostri monumenti religiosi, ho trovato anche un’ara con la dedica “A un dio sconosciuto”. Ebbene, io vi voglio appunto annunziare quello che voi onorate senza conoscere.
24 'Since the God who made the world and everything in it is himself Lord of heaven and earth, he doesnot make his home in shrines made by human hands.	24 Il Dio che ha creato il mondo e ciò che contiene, essendo Signore del cielo e della terra, non abita in templi materiali;
25 Nor is he in need of anything, that he should be served by human hands; on the contrary, it is he whogives everything -- including life and breath -- to everyone.	25 né può essere servito dalle nostre mani, come se avesse bisogno di qualcosa, egli che a tutti dà la vita, il respiro e ogni altro bene.
26 From one single principle he not only created the whole human race so that they could occupy theentire earth, but he decreed the times and limits of their habitation.	26 Anzi è lui che da un solo uomo ha prodotto l’intero genere umano affinché popolasse tutta la terra, fissando nello spazio e nel tempo i limiti della loro vita.
27 And he did this so that they might seek the deity and, by feeling their way towards him, succeed infinding him; and indeed he is not far from any of us,	27 È per questo che essi cercano Dio, tentando di sentirlo e di afferrarlo, egli che davvero non è lontano da ciascuno di noi.
28 since it is in him that we live, and move, and exist, as indeed some of your own writers have said: Weare al his children.	28 Per opera sua infatti abbiamo vita, moto ed esistenza, come certuni dei vostri poeti hanno cantato: “Noi siamo ‘infatti della sua stirpe”.
29 'Since we are the children of God, we have no excuse for thinking that the deity looks like anything ingold, silver or stone that has been carved and designed by a man.	29 Ebbene, giacchè siamo della stirpe di; Dio, non dobbiamo ritenere che la divinità sia rassomigliabile a un blocco d’oro o d’argento o di sasso, scolpito dall’arte e dal genio umano.
30 'But now, overlooking the times of ignorance, God is tel ing everyone everywhere that they mustrepent,	30 Dio, dunque, dopo aver tollerato le epoche dell’ignoranza, al presente chiama il genere umano a un ravvedimento generale e universale.
31 because he has fixed a day when the whole world will be judged in uprightness by a man he hasappointed. And God has publicly proved this by raising him from the dead.'	31 Poiché ha stabilito un giorno in cui giudicherà il mondo con giustizia per mezzo di un uomo da lui designato e accreditato davanti a tutti col risuscitarlo da morte...».
32 At this mention of rising from the dead, some of them burst out laughing; others said, 'We would liketo hear you talk about this another time.'	32 All’udire parlare di risurrezione dei morti, parte si misero a beffarlo, parte dissero: «Su questo argomento ti ascolteremo un’altra volta».
33 After that Paul left them,	33 Così Paolo dovette lasciare la loro assemblea.
34 but there were some who attached themselves to him and became believers, among them Dionysiusthe Aeropagite and a woman cal ed Damaris, and others besides.	34 Alcuni di loro, tuttavia, non vollero staccarsi da lui e abbracciarono la fede, tra cui Dionigi, l’areopagita, più una donna chiamata Damaris e altri ancora.
