1 What then shall we say? Shall we persist in sin that grace may abound? Of course not!	1 Concluderemo, dunque, che dobbiamo restare nel peccato perché abbondi la grazia?
2 How can we who died to sin yet live in it?	2 È assurdo! Noi, morti ormai al peccato, come potremo ancora vivere in esso?
3 Or are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?	3 Non sapete forse che tutti noi che fummo battezzati in Cristo Gesù, fummo battezzati nella sua morte?
4 We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life.	4 Fummo, col battesimo, sepolti con lui nella morte, affinché, come Cristo fu risuscitato da morte dalla potenza gloriosa del Padre, così noi pure vivessimo di una vita nuova.
5 For if we have grown into union with him through a death like his, we shall also be united with him in the resurrection.	5 Se infatti siamo diventati un essere solo con lui nella somiglianza della sua morte, lo diventeremo altresì nella somiglianza della sua risurrezione;
6 We know that our old self was crucified with him, so that our sinful body might be done away with, that we might no longer be in slavery to sin.	6 poiché, sappiamo bene, il nostro vecchio uomo fu crocifisso con lui, affinché fosse distrutto il corpo dominato dal peccato e noi non si fosse più schiavi del peccato.
7 For a dead person has been absolved from sin.	7 Ora chi è morto è affrancato dal peccato.
8 If, then, we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him.	8 È se con Cristo siamo morti, crediamo che con lui parimenti vivremo,
9 We know that Christ, raised from the dead, dies no more; death no longer has power over him.	9 ben consci però che Cristo, una volta risuscitato dai morti, più non morrà, non avendo la morte più alcun dominio su di lui.
10 As to his death, he died to sin once and for all; as to his life, he lives for God.	10 Chi è morto, è morto al peccato una volta per sempre: e chi vive, vive ormai per Iddio.
11 Consequently, you too must think of yourselves as (being) dead to sin and living for God in Christ Jesus.	11 Così voi pure consideratevi morti sì al peccato, ma vivi per Dio in Cristo Gesù.
12 Therefore, sin must not reign over your mortal bodies so that you obey their desires.	12 Il peccato, dunque, non regni più nel vostro corpo mortale sì da piegarvi alle sue voglie,
13 And do not present the parts of your bodies to sin as weapons for wickedness, but present yourselves to God as raised from the dead to life and the parts of your bodies to God as weapons for righteousness.	13 né vogliate offrire le vostre membra quali armi d’ingiustizia al servizio del peccato; offrite invece a Dio voi stessi, come vivi risorti da morte, donate le vostre membra quali armi di giustizia al servizio di Dio.
14 For sin is not to have any power over you, since you are not under the law but under grace.	14 Poiché il peccato non eserciterà più il suo dominio sopra di voi, non essendo voi sotto la legge, ma sotto la grazia.
15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? Of course not!	15 E che, dunque? dovremmo forse peccare per il fatto che non siamo più sotto la legge ma sotto la grazia? Sarebbe mostruoso!
16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?	16 Se vi offrite ad uno come schiavi per prestargli obbedienza, sia esso il peccato che mena alla morte o l’obbedienza che conduce alla giustizia, voi siete suoi schiavi e a lui dovete ubbidire.
17 But thanks be to God that, although you were once slaves of sin, you have become obedient from the heart to the pattern of teaching to which you were entrusted.	17 Ma siano rese grazie a Dio che voi, già schiavi del peccato avete ubbidito di cuore a quella norma di vita cui siete stati affidati
18 Freed from sin, you have become slaves of righteousness.	18 e, una volta affrancati dal peccato, vi siete messi al servizio della giustizia.
19 I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your nature. For just as you presented the parts of your bodies as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness for lawless ness, so now present them as slaves to righteousness for sanctification.	19 Adopero una similitudine umana, in considerazione della vostra debolezza: come un tempo offriste le vostre membra schiave dell’immondezza e della ribellione per essere dei ribelli, così ora offrite le vostre membra schiave della giustizia per santificarvi.
20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free from righteousness.	20 Un giorno, schiavi del peccato, eravate liberi di fronte alla giustizia.
21 But what profit did you get then from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.	21 Ebbene, qual frutto ne traevate? Cose di cui ora arrossite! La morte ne è infatti il risultato finale.
22 But now that you have been freed from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit that you have leads to sanctification, and its end is eternal life.	22 Ora al contrario, affrancati dal peccato e fatti servi di Dio, avete per frutto la santità e per fine la vita eterna. E naturalmente:
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.	23 poiché se il salario del peccato è la morte, il dono di Dio è la vita eterna nel Cristo Gesù, nostro Signore.
