1 The LORD said to Moses,	1 Habló Yahveh a Moisés y le dijo:
2 "Avenge the Israelites on the Midianites, and then you shall be taken to your people."	2 «Haz que los israelitas tomen venganza de los madianitas. Luego irás a reunirte con tu parentela.»
3 So Moses told the people, "Select men from your midst and arm them for war, to attack the Midianites and execute the LORD'S vengeance on them.	3 Moisés habló al pueblo y le dijo: «Que se armen algunos de vosotros para la guerra de Yahveh contra Madián, para tomar de Madián la venganza de Yahveh.
4 From each of the tribes of Israel you shall send a band of one thousand men to war."	4 Pondréis sobre las armas mil de cada tribu, de todas las tribus de Israel.»
5 From the clans of Israel, therefore, a thousand men of each tribe were levied, so that there were twelve thousand men armed for war.	5 Los millares de Israel suministraron, a razón de mil por cada tribu, 12.000 hombres armados para la guerra.
6 Moses sent them out on the campaign, a thousand from each tribe, with Phinehas, son of Eleazar, the priest for the campaign, who had with him the sacred vessels and the trumpets for sounding the alarm.	6 Moisés envió al combate mil por cada tribu, y con ellos a Pinjás, hijo del sacerdote Eleazar, que llevaba en su mano los objetos sagrados y las trompetas del clamoreo.
7 They waged war against the Midianites, as the LORD had commanded Moses, and killed every male among them.	7 Atacaron a Madián como había mandado Yahveh a Moisés y mataron a todos los varones.
8 Besides those slain in battle, they killed the five Midianite kings: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba; and they also executed Balaam, son of Beor, with the sword.	8 Mataron también a los reyes de Madián: Eví, Réquem, Sur, Jur y Rebá, cinco reyes madianitas; y a Balaam, hijo de Beor, lo mataron a filo de espada.
9 But the Israelites kept the women of the Midianites with their little ones as captives, and all their herds and flocks and wealth as spoil,	9 Los israelitas hicieron cautivas a las mujeres de Madián y a sus niños y saquearon su ganado, sus rebaños, y todos sus bienes.
10 while they set on fire all the towns where they had settled and all their encampments.	10 Dieron fuego a todas las ciudades en que habitaban y a todos sus campamentos.
11 Then they took all the booty, with the people and beasts they had captured, and brought the captives, together with the spoils and booty,	11 Reunieron todo el botín que habían capturado, hombres y bestias,
12 to Moses and the priest Eleazar and to the Israelite community at their camp on the plains of Moab, along the Jericho stretch of the Jordan.	12 y llevaron los cautivos, la presa y el botín ante Moisés, ante el sacerdote Eleazar y ante toda la comunidad de los israelitas, al campamento, en las Estepas de Moab, que están cerca del Jordán, a la altura de Jericó.
13 When Moses and the priest Eleazar, with all the princes of the community, went outside the camp to meet them,	13 Moisés, el sacerdote Eleazar y todos los principales de la comunidad salieron a su encuentro hasta fuera del campamento.
14 Moses became angry with the officers of the army, the clan and company commanders, who were returning from combat.	14 Moisés se encolerizó contra los jefes de las tropas, jefes de millar y jefes de cien, que volvían de la expedición guerrera.
15 "So you have spared all the women!" he exclaimed.	15 Les dijo Moisés: «¿Pero habéis dejado con vida a todas las mujeres?
16 "Why, they are the very ones who on Balaam's advice prompted the unfaithfulness of the Israelites toward the LORD in the Peor affair, which began the slaughter of the LORD'S community.	16 Precisamente ellas fueron las que indujeron a prevaricar contra Yahveh a los israelitas, siguiendo el consejo de Balaam, cuando lo de Peor; por eso azotó la plaga a la comunidad de Yahveh.
17 Slay, therefore, every male child and every woman who has had intercourse with a man.	17 Matad, pues, a todos los niños varones. Y a toda mujer que haya conocido varón, que haya dormido con varón, matadla también.
18 But you may spare and keep for yourselves all girls who had no intercourse with a man.	18 Pero dejad con vida para vosotros a todas las muchachas que no hayan dormido con varón.
19 "Moreover, you shall stay outside the camp for seven days, and those of you who have slain anyone or touched anyone slain in battle shall purify yourselves on the third and on the seventh day. This applies both to you and to your captives.	19 Y vosotros, todos los que hayáis matado a alguno y todos los que hayáis tocado a algún muerto, acampad fuera del campamento siete días. Purificaos vosotros y vuestros cautivos, el día tercero y el día séptimo.
20 You shall also purify every article of cloth, leather, goats' hair, or wood."	20 Purificad también todos los vestidos, todos los objetos de cuero, todo tejido de pelo de cabra y todo objeto de madera.»
21 Eleazar the priest told the soldiers who had returned from combat: "This is what the law, as prescribed by the LORD to Moses, ordains:	21 Dijo el sacerdote Eleazar a los hombres de la tropa que habían ido a la guerra: «Este es el precepto de la Ley que ordenó Yahveh a Moisés.
22 Whatever can stand fire, such as gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin and lead,	22 El oro, la plata, el bronce, el hierro, el estaño y el plomo,
23 you shall put into the fire, that it may become clean; however, it must also be purified with lustral water. But whatever cannot stand fire you shall put into the water.	23 todo lo que puede pasar por el fuego, lo pasaréis por el fuego y quedará puro. Pero será purificado con las aguas lustrales. Pero todo lo que no pueda pasar por el fuego lo pasaréis por las aguas.»
24 On the seventh day you shall wash your clothes, and then you will again be clean. After that you may enter the camp."	24 Lavaréis vuestros vestidos el día séptimo y quedaréis puros. Luego podréis entrar en el campamento.
25 The LORD said to Moses:	25 Habló Yahveh a Moisés y le dijo:
26 "With the help of the priest Eleazar and of the heads of the ancestral houses, count up all the human captives and the beasts that have been taken;	26 «Sacad la cuenta, tú, el sacerdote Eleazar y los principales de las familias de la comunidad, del botín y de los cautivos, hombres y bestias.
27 then divide them evenly, giving half to those who took active part in the war by going out to combat, and half to the rest of the community.	27 Luego repartirás el botín, la mitad para los combatientes que fueron a la guerra y la otra mitad para toda la comunidad.
28 You shall levy a tax for the LORD on the warriors who went out to combat: one out of every five hundred persons, oxen, asses and sheep	28 Reservarás para Yahveh, de la parte de los combatientes que fueron a la guerra, uno por cada quinientos, sean hombres, bueyes, asnos u ovejas.
29 in their half of the spoil you shall turn over to the priest Eleazar as a contribution to the LORD.	29 Lo tomarás de la mitad que les corresponde y se lo darás al sacerdote Eleazar, como reserva para Yahveh.
30 From the Israelites' half you shall take one out of every fifty persons, and the same from the different beasts, oxen, asses and sheep, and give them to the Levites, who have charge of the LORD'S Dwelling."	30 Y de la mitad de los israelitas, uno por cada cincuenta, sean hombres, bueyes, asnos u ovejas, cualquier clase de bestias, y se lo darás a los levitas, que están encargados del ministerio de la Morada de Yahveh.
31 So Moses and the priest Eleazar did this, as the LORD had commanded Moses.	31 Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar hicieron como había mandado Yahveh a Moisés.
32 This booty, what was left of the loot which the soldiers had taken, amounted to six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep,	32 Fue el botín, el remanente de lo que la gente de guerra había saqueado: 675.000 cabezas de ganado lanar,
33 seventy-two thousand oxen,	33 72.000 de vacuno
34 sixty-one thousand asses,	34 y 61.000 de ganado asnal.
35 and thirty-two thousand girls who were still virgins.	35 En cuanto a las personas, las mujeres que no habían dormido con varón eran, en total, 32.000.
36 The half that fell to those who had gone out to combat was: three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,	36 La mitad correspondiente a los que fueron al combate: 337.500 cabezas de ganado lanar,
37 of which six hundred and seventy-five fell as tax to the LORD;	37 siendo la parte de Yahveh de ganado lanar, 675 cabezas;
38 thirty-six thousand oxen, of which seventy-two fell as tax to the LORD;	38 36.000 de vacuno, siendo la parte de Yahveh 72,
39 thirty thousand five hundred asses, of which sixty-one fell as tax to the LORD;	39 30.500 de asnal, siendo la parte de Yahveh 61.
40 and sixteen thousand persons, of whom thirty-two fell as tax to the LORD.	40 Las personas eran 16.000, correspondiendo a Yahveh, 32.
41 The taxes contributed to the LORD, Moses gave to the priest Eleazar, as the LORD had commanded him.	41 Moisés dio al sacerdote Eleazar la reserva de Yahveh, como había ordenado Yahveh a Moisés.
42 The half for the other Israelites, which fell to the community when Moses had taken it from the soldiers, was:	42 La mitad perteneciente a los israelitas, que había separado Moisés de la de los combatientes,
43 three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,	43 esta mitad correspondiente a la comunidad era de 337.500 cabezas de ganado lanar;
44 thirty-six thousand oxen,	44 36.000 de vacuno;
45 thirty thousand five hundred asses,	45 30.500 de asnal,
46 and sixteen thousand persons.	46 y 16.000 personas.
47 From this, the Israelites' share, Moses, as the LORD had ordered, took one out of every fifty, both of persons and of beasts, and gave them to the Levites, who had charge of the LORD'S Dwelling.	47 Tomó Moisés de la mitad de los israelitas, a razón de uno por cincuenta, hombres y bestias, y se los dio a los levitas, que se encargan del ministerio de la Morada de Yahveh, como había ordenado Yahveh a Moisés.
48 Then the officers who had been clan and company commanders of the army came up to Moses	48 Se presentaron ante Moisés los jefes de las tropas de Israel que habían ido a la guerra, jefes de millar y jefes de cien,
49 and said to him, "Your servants have counted up the soldiers under our command, and not one is missing.	49 y dijeron a Moisés: «Tus siervos han sacado la cuenta de los combatientes que tenían a sus órdenes, y no falta ni uno.
50 So, to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD, each of us will bring as an offering to the LORD some gold article he has picked up, such as an anklet, a bracelet, a ring, an earring, or a necklace."	50 Por eso traemos de ofrenda a Yahveh lo que cada uno de nosotros ha encontrado en objetos de oro, brazaletes, ajorcas, anillos, arracadas y collares, para hacer expiación por nosotros delante de Yahveh.»
51 Moses and the priest Eleazar accepted this gold from them, all of it in well-wrought articles.	51 Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar recibieron de ellos el oro y las joyas.
52 The gold that they gave as a contribution to the LORD amounted in all to sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels. This was from the clan and company commanders;	52 El total del oro de la reserva que reservaron para Yahveh, de parte de los jefes de millar y de cien, fue 16.750 siclos.
53 what the common soldiers had looted each one kept for himself.	53 Los combatientes habían tomado cada uno su botín.
54 Moses, then, and the priest Eleazar accepted the gold from the clan and company commanders, and put it in the meeting tent as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD.	54 Pero Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar recibieron el oro de los jefes de millar y de cien y lo llevaron a la Tienda del Encuentro, para que sirviera ante Yahveh de memorial en favor de los israelitas.
