Lamentations 5

NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
Remember, O LORD, what has befallen us, look, and see our disgrace:1 Remember, O Lord, what is come upon us: consider and behold our reproach.
Our inherited lands have been turned over to strangers, our homes to foreigners.2 Our inheritance is turned to aliens: our houses to strangers.
We have become orphans, fatherless; widowed are our mothers.3 We are become orphans without a father: our mothers are as widows.
The water we drink we must buy, for our own wood we must pay.4 We have drunk our water for money: we have bought our wood.
On our necks is the yoke of those who drive us; we are worn out, but allowed no rest.5 We were dragged by the necks, we were weary and no rest was given us.
To Egypt we submitted, and to Assyria, to fill our need of bread.6 We have given our hand to Egypt, and to the Assyrians, that we might be satisfied with bread.
Our fathers, who sinned, are no more; but we bear their guilt.7 Our fathers have sinned, and are not: and we have borne their iniquities.
Slaves rule over us; there is no one to rescue us from their hands.8 Servants have ruled over us: there was none to redeem us out of their hand.
At the peril of our lives we bring in our sustenance, in the face of the desert heat;9 We fetched our bread at the peril of our lives, because of the sword in the desert.
Our skin is shriveled up, as though by a furnace, with the searing blasts of famine.10 Our skin was burnt as an oven, by reason of the violence of the famine.
The wives in Zion were ravished by the enemy, the maidens in the cities of Judah;11 They oppressed the women in Sion, and the virgins in the cities of Juda.
Princes were gibbeted by them, elders shown no respect.12 The princes were hanged up by their hand: they did not respect the persons of the ancient.
The youths carry the millstones, boys stagger under their loads of wood;13 They abused the young men indecently: and the children fell under the wood.
The old men have abandoned the gate, the young men their music.14 The ancients have ceased from the gates: the young men from the choir of the singers.
The joy of our hearts has ceased, our dance has turned into mourning;15 The joy of our heart is ceased, our dancing is turned into mourning.
The garlands have fallen from our heads: woe to us, for we have sinned!16 The crown is fallen from our head woe to us, because we have sinned.
Over this our hearts are sick, at this our eyes grow dim:17 Therefore is our heart sorrowful, therefore are our eyes become dim,
That Mount Zion should be desolate, with jackals roaming there!18 For mount Sion, because it is destroyed, foxes have walked upon it.
You, O LORD, are enthroned forever; your throne stands from age to age.19 But thou, O Lord, shalt remain for ever, thy throne from generation to generation.
Why, then, should you forget us, abandon us so long a time?20 Why wilt thou forget us for ever? why wilt thou forsake us for a long time?
Lead us back to you, O LORD, that we may be restored: give us anew such days as we had of old.21 Convert us, O Lord, to thee, and we shall be converted: renew our days, as from the beginning.
For now you have indeed rejected us, and in full measure turned your wrath against us.22 But thou hast utterly rejected us, thou art exceedingly angry against us.
