1 Better is childlessness with virtue; for immortal is its memory: because both by God is it acknowledged, and by men.	1 Meglio essere senza figli e avere la virtù, l’immortalità infatti sta nel ricordo di essa, perché essa è nota a Dio e agli uomini:
2 When it is present men imitate it, and they long for it when it is gone; And forever it marches crowned in triumph, victorious in unsullied deeds of valor.	2 imitata se presente e desiderata se lontana; coronata di un trionfo eterno, perché vittoriosa sul campo di lotte immacolate.
3 But the numerous progeny of the wicked shall be of no avail; their spurious offshoots shall not strike deep root nor take firm hold.	3 La prole feconda degli empi, poi, non serve a nulla. Pollone bastardo, essa non getterà profonde radici né metterà basi sicure.
4 For even though their branches flourish for a time, they are unsteady and shall be rocked by the wind and, by the violence of the winds, uprooted;	4 Anche se per certo tempo rinverdisce nei rami, quei getti meschini saranno scossi dal vento e sradicati dalla violenza dei venti.
5 Their twigs shall be broken off untimely, and their fruit be useless, unripe for eating, and fit for nothing.	5 Saranno strappati i rami non sviluppati e i loro frutti non buoni sono ancora acerbi e per nulla utili.
6 For children born of lawless unions give evidence of the wickedness of their parents, when they are examined.	6 Ecco, i figli nati da unione illegittima, essi, al rendiconto, attestano la cattiveria dei genitori!
7 But the just man, though he die early, shall be at rest.	7 Il giusto invece, anche se finisce di morte immatura, avrà riposo.
8 For the age that is honorable comes not with the passing of time, nor can it be measured in terms of years.	8 La vecchiaia stimabile, infatti, non è la longevità né viene misurata dal numero degli anni:
9 Rather, understanding is the hoary crown for men, and an unsullied life, the attainment of old age.	9 canizie, per l’uomo, è l’essere saggio ed età senile è una vita senza macchia.
10 He who pleased God was loved; he who lived among sinners was transported--	10 Divenuto molto caro a Dio, fu amato da lui, e, poiché viveva tra i peccatori, fu trasferito.
11 Snatched away, lest wickedness pervert his mind or deceit beguile his soul;	11 Fu rapito perché la malizia non gli mutasse la mente l’inganno non gli sviasse l’anima.
12 For the witchery of paltry things obscures what is right and the whirl of desire transforms the innocent mind.	12 L’incanto delle cose vili sfigura i beni; il turbine delle passioni perverte le menti ingenue.
13 Having become perfect in a short while, he reached the fullness of a long career;	13 Arrivato in breve a perfezione, egli aveva percorso un tempo lungo;
14 for his soul was pleasing to the LORD, therefore he sped him out of the midst of wickedness. But the people saw and did not understand, nor did they take this into account.	14 ma era grata al Signore la sua anima ed egli si affrettò a liberarlo dalla malizia. Ora i popoli vedono e non intendono né vi riflettono:
15	15 benevolenza e misericordia vanno sugli eletti di lui e la tutela è per i suoi santi!
16 Yes, the just man dead condemns the sinful who live, and youth swiftly completed condemns the many years of the wicked man grown old.	16 Il giusto che è morto condanna gli empi che ancora vivono; e una gioventù divenuta presto perfetta accusa una vita iniqua longeva.
17 For they see the death of the wise man and do not understand what the LORD intended for him, or why he made him secure.	17 Vedranno, così, essi la fine del saggio e non capiranno quali disegni Dio abbia su di lui, e perché il Signore lo abbia posto al sicuro.
18 They see, and hold him in contempt; but the LORD laughs them to scorn.	18 Vedranno e lo riterranno un nulla; ma il Signore li schernirà.
19 And they shall afterward become dishonored corpses and an unceasing mockery among the dead. For he shall strike them down speechless and prostrate and rock them to their foundations; They shall be utterly laid waste and shall be in grief and their memory shall perish.	19 In seguito, essi saranno un cadavere disonorato e ludibrio tra i morti, per sempre, perché egli li scaglierà, senza fiato, a capofitto, e li schianterà dalle fondamenta; saranno essi ridotti all’estremo della rovina, e saranno in doglia e la loro memoria scomparirà.
20 Fearful shall they come, at the counting up of their sins, and their lawless deeds shall convict them to their face.	20 Verranno costernati alla disamina delle loro colpe e le loro iniquità saranno contro di essi per accusarli.
