Nehemiah 4

1 When Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the restoration of the walls of Jerusalem was progressing--for the gaps were beginning to be closed up--they became extremely angry.	1 Quando Sanballat, Tobia, gli Arabi, gli Ammoniti e gli Ashdoditi vennero a sapere che la riparazione delle mura di Gerusalemme progrediva e già si cominciava a chiudere le brecce, si adirarono fortemente
2 Thereupon they all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and thus to throw us into confusion.	2 e, tutti insieme, decisero di attaccare Gerusalemme e di sconvolgerci.
3 We prayed to our God and posted a watch against them day and night for fear of what they might do.	3 Noi allora supplicammo il nostro Dio e stabilimmo una sorveglianza contro di loro giorno e notte per difenderci da un loro assalto.
4 Meanwhile the Judahites were saying: "Slackened is the bearers' strength, there is no end to the rubbish; Never shall we be able the wall to rebuild."	4 Giuda però andava dicendo: «Viene meno la forza del portatore e sono ancora molti i detriti; ma noi non possiamo più restaurare È muraglia!»
5 Our enemies thought, "Before they are aware of it or see us, we shall come into their midst, kill them, and put an end to the work."	5 I nostri nemici invece ripetevano: «Non sapranno e non vedranno finché non piomberemo in mezzo a loro: li massacreremo e così faremo loro troncare il lavoro».
6 When the Jews who lived near them had come to us from one place after another, and had told us ten times over that they were about to attack us,	6 Allora vennero da noi i Giudei che abitavano vicino a loro e ci ripeterono dieci volte: «Quelli si muovono contro di noi da ogni loro dimora;
7 I stationed guards down below, behind the wall, near the exposed points, assigning them by family groups with their swords, their spears, and their bows.	7 anzi, si sono accampati all’aperto, in fondo allo spazio fuori le mura». Stabilii pertanto il popolo secondo le famiglie, con le loro spade, lance e archi.
8 I made an inspection, then addressed these words to the nobles, the magistrates, and the rest of the people: "Have no fear of them! Keep in mind the LORD, who is great and to be feared, and fight for your brethren, your sons and daughters, your wives and your homes."	8 Quindi, dopo aver considerato la situazione, mi levai e parlai ai notabili, ai magistrati e al resto del popolo: «Non spaventatevi di fronte a loro; ricordatevi del Signore grande e terribile e perciò combattete per i vostri fratelli, i vostri figli, le vostre figlie, je vostre donne e le vostre Case».
9 When our enemies became aware that we had been warned and that God had upset their plan, we all went back, each to his own task at the wall.	9 Appena i nostri nemici seppero che noi eravamo al corrente delle loro intenzioni, Dio dissipò la loro trama e noi tutti ritornammo alle mura, ciascuno al proprio lavoro.
10 From that time on, however, only half my able men took a hand in the work, while the other half, armed with spears, bucklers, bows, and breastplates, stood guard behind the whole house of Judah	10 Da quel giorno, la metà dei miei giovani attendeva al Javoro; l’altra metà imbracciava le lance, gli scudi, gli archi e le corazze, mentre i capi dirigevano i lavori dietro tutta la casa di Giuda,
11 as they rebuilt the wall. The load carriers, too, were armed; each did his work with one hand and held a weapon with the other.	11 che stava ricostruendo la muraglia. Anche coloro che portavano pesi erano in armi: con una mano lavoravano e nell’altra avevano il giavellotto.
12 Every builder, while he worked, had his sword girt at his side. Also, a trumpeter stood beside me,	12 Così pure ogni costruttore cingeva al fianco la spada durante il lavoro, mentre il trombettiere se ne stava pronto, accanto a me.
13 for I had said to the nobles, the magistrates, and the rest of the people: "Our work is scattered and extensive, and we are widely separated from one another along the wall;	13 Dissi ai notabili, ai magistrati e al resto del popolo: «Il lavoro è grande ed esteso: noi ci troviamo sparsi lungo la muraglia e lontani l’uno dall’altro.
14 wherever you hear the trumpet sound, join us there; our God will fight with us."	14 Dovunque sentirete il suono della tromba, accorrete vicino a noi: il nostro Dio combatterà per noi!»
15 Thus we went on with the work, half of the men with spears at the ready, from daybreak till the stars came out.	15 Così noi potevamo continuare il lavoro dal sorgere dell’aurora fino allo spuntare delle stelle.
16 At the same time I told the people to spend the nights inside Jerusalem, each man with his own attendant, so that they might serve as a guard by night and a working force by day.	16 Ancora in quella occasione, avevo impartito al popolo quest’ordine: «Ognuno con il proprio giovane passi la notte entro Gerusalemme; così ci sarà per noi la guardia di notte e si lavorerà durante la giornata».
17 Neither I, nor my kinsmen, nor any of my attendants, nor any of the bodyguard that accompanied me took off his clothes; everyone kept his weapon at his right hand.	17 né io né i miei fratelli né i miei giovani né gli uomini di guardia, che mi seguivano, ci toglievamo mai le vesti e ognuno teneva sempre il giavellotto nella destra.
