Deuteronomio 25

1 Se nasce lite tra due uomini, e si fa ricorso ai giudici, questi daranno laude di giustizia al giusto, e l'empio condanneranno di empietà.	1 "When men have a dispute and bring it to court, and a decision is handed down to them acquitting the innocent party and condemning the guilty party,
2 E se vedranno, che colui, che ha peccato, sia degno di essere battuto, lo faran distendere per terra, e lo faran battere in loro presenza. La quantità delle battiture sarà secondo la misura del peccato.	2 if the latter deserves stripes, the judge shall have him lie down and in his presence receive the number of stripes his guilt deserves.
3 Con questo però, che non oltrepassino il numero di quaranta: affinché non abbia a ritirarsi il tuo fratello lacerato sconciamente sotto i tuoi occhi.	3 Forty stripes may be given him, but no more; lest, if he were beaten with more stripes than these, your kinsman should be looked upon as disgraced because of the severity of the beating.
4 Non metterai la musoliera al bue, che tribbia le tue biade nell’aia.	4 "You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out grain.
5 Quando due fratelli staranno insieme, e uno di essi sarà morto senza figliuoli, la moglie del defunto non si mariterà a un estraneo: ma la prenderà l’altro fratello, il quale darà discendenza al fratello morto:	5 "When brothers live together and one of them dies without a son, the widow of the deceased shall not marry anyone outside the family; but her husband's brother shall go to her and perform the duty of a brother-in-law by marrying her.
6 E al primo figliuolo che avrà da lei, darà il nome di quello, affinché il nome di lui non si estingua in Israele.	6 The first-born son she bears shall continue the line of the deceased brother, that his name may not be blotted out from Israel.
7 Ma se quegli non vorrà sposar la moglie del fratello, che debb'essere sua in vigor della legge, andrà la donna alla porta della città, e interpellerà i seniori, e dirà: Non vuole il fratello del mio marito far rivivere il nome del suo fratello in Israele, né prendermi in moglie.	7 If, however, a man does not care to marry his brother's wife, she shall go up to the elders at the gate and declare, 'My brother-in-law does not intend to perform his duty toward me and refuses to perpetuate his brother's name in Israel.'
8 E tosto lo faranno citare, e lo interrogheranno. Se risponderà: Non voglio sposarla:	8 Thereupon the elders of his city shall summon him and admonish him. If he persists in saying, 'I am not willing to marry her,'
9 Si appresserà a lui la donna alla presenza de' seniori, e gli leverà dal piede la scarpa, e gli sputerà in faccia e dirà: Così sia fatto a colui che non vuole mantener la casa di suo fratello.	9 his sister-in-law, in the presence of the elders, shall go up to him and strip his sandal from his foot and spit in his face, saying publicly, 'This is how one should be treated who will not build up his brother's family!'
10 E la casa di lui sarà chiamata in Israele la Casa dello scalzato.	10 And his lineage shall be spoken of in Israel as 'the family of the man stripped of his sandal.'
11 Se due uomini verranno a contesa tra di loro, e l’uno principierà ad attaccare l’altro, e volendo la moglie di questo salvare il marito dalle mani di quello, che è più forte, stenderà la mano per prenderlo in parte, che non si nomina;	11 "When two men are fighting and the wife of one intervenes to save her husband from the blows of his opponent, if she stretches out her hand and seizes the latter by his private parts,
12 Tu le farai tagliar la mano, e non avrai niente di compassione per lei.	12 you shall chop off her hand without pity.
13 Non porterai nella sacchetta stadere diverse, una più forte, l’altra meno:	13 "You shall not keep two differing weights in your bag, one large and the other small;
14 Non avrai in casa tua il moggio più grande, e il più piccolo:	14 nor shall you keep two different measures in your house, one large and the other small.
15 Terrai stadera giusta, e vera, e moggio giusto e vero: affinché tu viva lungo tempo sopra la terra, che sarà a te data dal Signore Dio tuo:	15 But use a true and just weight, and a true and just measure, that you may have a long life on the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you.
16 Perocché il Signore Dio tuo ha in abbominazione chi pecca in questo, e odia ogni ingiustizia.	16 Everyone who is dishonest in any of these matters is an abomination to the LORD, your God.
17 Ricordati di quello che fece a te Amalec, quando tu eri in viaggio uscendo dall'Egitto:	17 "Bear in mind what Amalek did to you on the journey after you left Egypt,
18 Com'egli si mosse inverso di te, e mise a fil di spada gli ultimi del tuo esercito, che si erano per la stanchezza arrestati, quando tu eri rifinito dalle fatiche, e dalla fame, ed egli non ebbe timore di Dio.	18 how without fear of any god he harassed you along the way, weak and weary as you were, and cut off at the rear all those who lagged behind.
19 Quando adunque il Signore Dio tuo ti avrà dato requie, e avrà rendute soggette tutte all’intorno le genti del paese ch'ei ti ha promesso, tu farai sì, ch'egli più non si nomini sotto del cielo. Bada di non dimenticartene.	19 Therefore, when the LORD, your God, gives you rest from all your enemies round about in the land which he is giving you to occupy as your heritage, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under the heavens. Do not forget!
