BIBBIA MARTINI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Ma Giobbe rispose, e disse:	1 Job spoke next. He said:
2 Sino a quando affliggerete voi l'anima mia, e mi struggerete co' vostri ragionamenti?	2 How much longer are you going to torment me and crush me by your speeches?
3 Ecco che per la decima volta voi mi svergognate, e non avete rossore di opprimermi.	3 You have insulted me ten times already: have you no shame at maltreating me?
4 Certamente quando io sia nell'ignoranza, l'ignoranza mia resterà con me.	4 Even if I had gone astray, my error would still be my own affair.
5 Ma voi vi alzate contro di me, e mi rimproverate le mie umiliazioni.	5 But, whereas you take this superior attitude and claim that my disgrace is my own fault,
6 Almeno adesso intendete, che Dio non per elletto di suo retto giudicio mi ha afflitto, e mi ha investito co' suoi flagelli.	6 I tel you that God has wronged me and enveloped me in his net.
7 Se violentato ad alta voce io mi querelo, nissuno ascolta, e se getto strida nissuno mi fa ragione.	7 If I protest against such violence, I am not heard, if I appeal against it, judgement is never given.
8 Egli mi ha serrata da tutte parti la strada, onde non ho passaggio, ed ha ingombrato di tenebre il mio cammino.	8 He has built an impassable wal across my path and covered my way with darkness.
9 Mi ha spogliato della mia gloria, e mi ha levata di capo la mia corona.	9 He has deprived me of my glory and taken the crown from my head.
10 Egli d'ogni parte mi strugge, ed io perisco, ed ogni speranza a me toglie come a pianta che è sradicata.	10 He assails me from al directions to make me vanish; he uproots my hope as he might a tree.
11 Il suo furore arde contro di me, ed ei mi ha trattato come nemico.	11 Inflamed with anger against me, he regards me as his foe.
12 Son venute tutte insieme le sue milizie, e si sono fatta strada sopra di me, ed hanno assediata la mia casa da ogni lato.	12 His troops have come in force, directing their line of advance towards me, they are now encampedround my tent.
13 Ha tenuti lungi da me i miei fratelli, e i miei familiari si son ritirati da me quasi fossero estranei.	13 He has alienated my brothers from me, my relatives take care to avoid me,
14 I miei parenti mi han lasciato in abbandono, e chiunque mi conosceva si è scordato di me.	14 my intimate friends have gone away and the guests in my house have forgotten me.
15 Quelli che nella casa mia abitavano, e le mie serve, mi han riguardato, come uomo non più veduto, e agli occhi loro comparisco come straniero.	15 My slave-girls regard me as an intruder, a stranger as far as they are concerned.
16 Chiamai il mio servo, e non mi rispose, benché di propria bocca il pregassi.	16 My servant does not answer when I cal him, I am obliged to beg favours from him!
17 La mia moglie ha avuto a schifo il mio alito; e a' miei figliuoli lo porgeva preghiere.	17 My breath is unbearable to my wife, my stench to my own brothers.
18 Gli stolti ancora mi dispregiavano, e dietro alle mie spalle sparlavan di me.	18 Even the children look down on me, whenever I stand up, they start jeering at me.
19 Quelli che erano una volta miei consiglieri mi hanno in abominio, e l'amico più caro mi ha voltato le spalle.	19 All my dearest friends recoil from me in horror: those I loved best have turned against me.
20 Le ossa mie, consunte le carni, stanno attaccate alla pelle, e le sole labbra sono rimase attorno a' miei denti.	20 My flesh is rotting under my skin, my bones are sticking out like teeth.
21 Abbiate pietà di me, abbiate di me pietà almen voi, amici miei, perocché la man del Signore mi ha percosso.	21 Pity me, pity me, my friends, since I have been struck by the hand of God.
22 Perché mi perseguitate voi come fa Dio, e vi satollate delle mie carni.	22 Must you persecute me just as God does, and give my body no peace?
23 Chi mi darà, che siano scritte le mie parole? Chi mi darà, che siano impresse in un libro con istile di ferro,	23 Will no one let my words be recorded, inscribed on some monument
24 E scolpite rimangano in tavola di piombo, ovver sulla pietra collo scalpello?	24 with iron chisel and engraving tool, cut into the rock for ever?
25 Imperocché io so, che vive il mio Redentore, e che nell'ultimo giorno io risorgerò della terra:	25 I know that I have a living Defender and that he wil rise up last, on the dust of the earth.
26 E di nuovo sarò rivestito di questa mia pelle, e nella mia carne vedrò il mio Dio,	26 After my awakening, he wil set me close to him, and from my flesh I shall look on God.
27 Cui vedrò io medesimo, e non un altro, e in cui fisserò io stesso i miei occhi: questa è la speranza che nel mio seno io tengo riposta.	27 He whom I shal see wil take my part: my eyes will be gazing on no stranger. My heart sinks withinme.
28 Perché adunque dite voi ora: Perseguitiamolo, e attacchiamoci alle sue parole per accusarlo?	28 When you say, 'How can we confound him? What pretext can we discover against him?'
29 Fuggite adunque il lampeggiar della spada; perocché spada vi è ultrice delle iniquità: sappiate che v'ha un giudizio.	29 You yourselves had best beware the sword, since the wrath bursts into flame at wicked deeds andthen you wil learn that there is indeed a judgement!
