Corinthians 11

DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Be ye followers of me, as I also am of Christ.1 Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.
Now I praise you, brethren, that in all things you are mindful of me: and keep my ordinances as I have delivered them to you.2 I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold fast to the traditions, just as I handed them on to you.
But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.3 But I want you to know that Christ is the head of every man, and a husband the head of his wife, and God the head of Christ.
Every man praying or prophesying with his head covered, disgraceth his head.4 Any man who prays or prophesies with his head covered brings shame upon his head.
But every woman praying or prophesying with her head not covered, disgraceth her head: for it is all one as if she were shaven.5 But any woman who prays or prophesies with her head unveiled brings shame upon her head, for it is one and the same thing as if she had had her head shaved.
For if a woman be not covered, let her be shorn. But if it be a shame to a woman to be shorn or made bald, let her cover her head.6 For if a woman does not have her head veiled, she may as well have her hair cut off. But if it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should wear a veil.
The man indeed ought not to cover his head, because he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of the man.7 A man, on the other hand, should not cover his head, because he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man.
For the man is not of the woman, but the woman of the man.8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man;
For the man was not created for the woman, but the woman for the man.9 nor was man created for woman, but woman for man;
Therefore ought the woman to have a power over her head, because of the angels.10 for this reason a woman should have a sign of authority on her head, because of the angels.
But yet neither is the man without the woman, nor the woman without the man, in the Lord.11 Woman is not independent of man or man of woman in the Lord.
For as the woman is of the man, so also is the man by the woman: but all things of God.12 For just as woman came from man, so man is born of woman; but all things are from God.
You yourselves judge: doth it become a woman, to pray unto God uncovered?13 Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head unveiled?
Doth not even nature itself teach you, that a man indeed, if he nourish his hair, it is a shame unto him?14 Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears his hair long it is a disgrace to him,
But if a woman nourish her hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her for a covering.15 whereas if a woman has long hair it is her glory, because long hair has been given (her) for a covering?
But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor the church of God.16 But if anyone is inclined to be argumentative, we do not have such a custom, nor do the churches of God.
Now this I ordain: not praising you, that you come together not for the better, but for the worse.17 In giving this instruction, I do not praise the fact that your meetings are doing more harm than good.
For first of all I hear that when you come together in the church, there are schisms among you; and in part I believe it.18 First of all, I hear that when you meet as a church there are divisions among you, and to a degree I believe it;
For there must be also heresies: that they also, who are approved, may be made manifest among you.19 there have to be factions among you in order that (also) those who are approved among you may become known.
When you come therefore together into one place, it is not now to eat the Lord's supper.20 When you meet in one place, then, it is not to eat the Lord's supper,
For every one taketh before his own supper to eat. And one indeed is hungry and another is drunk.21 for in eating, each one goes ahead with his own supper, and one goes hungry while another gets drunk.
What, have you not houses to eat and to drink in? Or despise ye the church of God; and put them to shame that have not ? What shall I say to you? Do I praise you? In this I praise you not.22 Do you not have houses in which you can eat and drink? Or do you show contempt for the church of God and make those who have nothing feel ashamed? What can I say to you? Shall I praise you? In this matter I do not praise you.
For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus, the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread.23 For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread,
And giving thanks, broke, and said: Take ye, and eat: this is my body, which shall be delivered for you: this do for the commemoration of me.24 and, after he had given thanks, broke it and said, "This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me."
In like manner also the chalice, after he had supped, saying: This chalice is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as often as you shall drink, for the commemoration of me.25 In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me."
For as often as you shall eat this bread, and drink the chalice, you shall shew the death of the Lord, until he come.26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes.
Therefore whosoever shall eat this bread, or drink the chalice of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and of the blood of the Lord.27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will have to answer for the body and blood of the Lord.
But let a man prove himself: and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of the chalice.28 A person should examine himself, and so eat the bread and drink the cup.
For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh judgment to himself, not discerning the body of the Lord.29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself.
Therefore are there many inform and weak among you, and many sleep.30 That is why many among you are ill and infirm, and a considerable number are dying.
But if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.31 If we discerned ourselves, we would not be under judgment;
But whilst we are judged, we are chastised by the Lord, that we be not condemned with this world.32 but since we are judged by (the) Lord, we are being disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.
Wherefore, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another.33 Therefore, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another.
If any man be hungry, let him eat at home; that you come not together unto judgment. And the rest I will set in order, when I come.34 If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that your meetings may not result in judgment. The other matters I shall set in order when I come.
