1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended all these words, he said to his disciples:	1 Ye know that after two days the passover takes place, and the Son of man is delivered up to be crucified.
2 You know that after two days shall be the pasch, and the son of man shall be delivered up to be crucified:	2 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together to the palace of the high priest who was called Caiaphas,
3 Then were gathered together the chief priests and ancients of the people into the court of the high priest, who was called Caiphas:	3 and took counsel together in order that they might seize Jesus by subtlety and kill him;
4 And they consulted together, that by subtilty they might apprehend Jesus, and put him to death.	4 but they said, Not in the feast, that there be not a tumult among the people.
5 But they said: Not on the festival day, lest perhaps there should be a tumult among the people.	5 a woman, having an alabaster flask of very precious ointment, came to him and poured it out upon his head as he lay at table.
6 And when Jesus was in Bethania, in the house of Simon the leper,	6 But the disciples seeing it became indignant, saying, To what end {was} this waste?
7 There came to him a woman having an alabaster box of precious ointment, and poured it on his head as he was at table.	7 for this might have been sold for much and been given to the poor.
8 And the disciples seeing it, had indignation, saying: To what purpose is this waste?	8 But Jesus knowing {it} said to them, Why do ye trouble the woman? for she has wrought a good work toward me.
9 For this might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.	9 For ye have the poor always with you, but me ye have not always.
10 And Jesus knowing it, said to them: Why do you trouble this woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me.	10 For in pouring out this ointment on my body, she has done it for my burying.
11 For the poor you have always with you: but me you have not always.	11 Verily I say to you, Wheresoever these glad tidings may be preached in the whole world, that also which this {woman} has done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.
12 For she in pouring this ointment upon my body, hath done it for my burial.	12 and said, What are ye willing to give me, and *I* will deliver him up to you? And they appointed to him thirty pieces of silver.
13 Amen I say to you, wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, that also which she hath done, shall be told for a memory of her.	13 And from that time he sought a good opportunity that he might deliver him up.
14 Then went one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, to the chief priests,	14 And he said, Go into the city unto such a one, and say to him, The Teacher says, My time is near, I will keep the passover in thy house with my disciples.
15 And said to them: What will you give me, and I will deliver him unto you? But they appointed him thirty pieces of silver.	15 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the passover.
16 And from thenceforth he sought opportunity to betray him.	16 And when the evening was come he lay down at table with the twelve.
17 And on the first day of the Azymes, the disciples came to Jesus, saying: Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the pasch?	17 And as they were eating he said, Verily I say to you, that one of you shall deliver me up.
18 But Jesus said: Go ye into the city to a certain man, and say to him: the master saith, My time is near at hand, with thee I make the pasch with my disciples.	18 And being exceedingly grieved they began to say to him, each of them, Is it *I*, Lord?
19 And the disciples did as Jesus appointed to them, and they prepared the pasch.	19 But he answering said, He that dips his hand with me in the dish, *he* it is who shall deliver me up.
20 But when it was evening, he sat down with his twelve disciples.	20 The Son of man goes indeed, according as it is written concerning him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is delivered up; it were good for that man if he had not been born.
21 And whilst they were eating, he said: Amen I say to you, that one of you is about to betray me.	21 And Judas, who delivered him up, answering said, Is it *I*, Rabbi? He says to him, *Thou* hast said.
22 And they being very much troubled, began every one to say: Is it I, Lord?	22 And having taken {the} cup and given thanks, he gave {it} to them, saying, Drink ye all of it.
23 But he answering, said: He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, he shall betray me.	23 For this is my blood, that of the {new} covenant, that shed for many for remission of sins.
24 The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man shall be betrayed: it were better for him, if that man had not been born.	24 But I say to you, that I will not at all drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in the kingdom of my Father.
25 And Judas that betrayed him, answering, said: Is it I, Rabbi? He saith to him: Thou hast said it.	25 Depois do canto dos Salmos, dirigiram-se eles para o monte das Oliveiras.
26 And whilst they were at supper, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke: and gave to his disciples, and said: Take ye, and eat. This is my body.	26 Disse-lhes então Jesus: Esta noite serei para todos vós uma ocasião de queda; porque está escrito: Ferirei o pastor, e as ovelhas do rebanho serão dispersadas {Zc 13,7}.
27 And taking the chalice, he gave thanks, and gave to them, saying: Drink ye all of this.	27 Mas, depois da minha Ressurreição, eu vos precederei na Galiléia.
28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which shall be shed for many unto remission of sins.	28 Pedro interveio: Mesmo que sejas para todos uma ocasião de queda, para mim jamais o serás.
29 And I say to you, I will not drink from henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I shall drink it with you new in the kingdom of my Father.	29 Disse-lhe Jesus: Em verdade te digo: nesta noite mesma, antes que o galo cante, três vezes me negarás.
30 And a hymn being said, they went out unto mount Olivet.	30 Respondeu-lhe Pedro: Mesmo que seja necessário morrer contigo, jamais te negarei! E todos os outros discípulos diziam-lhe o mesmo.
31 Then Jesus said to them: All you shall be scandalized in me this night. For it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be dispersed.	31 Retirou-se Jesus com eles para um lugar chamado Getsêmani e disse-lhes: Assentai-vos aqui, enquanto eu vou ali orar.
32 But after I shall be risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.	32 E, tomando consigo Pedro e os dois filhos de Zebedeu, começou a entristecer-se e a angustiar-se.
33 And Peter answering, said to him: Although all shall be scandalized in thee, I will never be scandalized.	33 Disse-lhes, então: Minha alma está triste até a morte. Ficai aqui e vigiai comigo.
34 Jesus said to him: Amen I say to thee, that in this night before the cock crow, thou wilt deny me thrice.	34 Adiantou-se um pouco e, prostrando-se com a face por terra, assim rezou: Meu Pai, se é possível, afasta de mim este cálice! Todavia não se faça o que eu quero, mas sim o que tu queres.
35 Peter saith to him: Yea, though I should die with thee, I will not deny thee. And in like manner said all the disciples.	35 Foi ter então com os discípulos e os encontrou dormindo. E disse a Pedro: Então não pudestes vigiar uma hora comigo...
36 Then Jesus came with them into a country place which is called Gethsemani; and he said to his disciples: Sit you here, till I go yonder and pray.	36 Vigiai e orai para que não entreis em tentação. O espírito está pronto, mas a carne é fraca.
37 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to grow sorrowful and to be sad.	37 Afastou-se pela segunda vez e orou, dizendo: Meu Pai, se não é possível que este cálice passe sem que eu o beba, faça-se a tua vontade!
38 Then he saith to them: My soul is sorrowful even unto death: stay you here, and watch with me.	38 Voltou ainda e os encontrou novamente dormindo, porque seus olhos estavam pesados.
39 And going a little further, he fell upon his face, praying, and saying: My Father, if it be possible, let this chalice pass from me. Nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.	39 Deixou-os e foi orar pela terceira vez, dizendo as mesmas palavras.
40 And he cometh to his disciples, and findeth them asleep, and he saith to Peter: What? Could you not watch one hour with me?	40 Voltou então para os seus discípulos e disse-lhes: Dormi agora e repousai! Chegou a hora: o Filho do Homem vai ser entregue nas mãos dos pecadores...
41 Watch ye, and pray that ye enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh weak.	41 Levantai-vos, vamos! Aquele que me trai está perto daqui.
42 Again the second time, he went and prayed, saying: My Father, if this chalice may not pass away, but I must drink it, thy will be done.	42 Jesus ainda falava, quando veio Judas, um dos Doze, e com ele uma multidão de gente armada de espadas e cacetes, enviada pelos príncipes dos sacerdotes e pelos anciãos do povo.
43 And he cometh again and findeth them sleeping: for their eyes were heavy.	43 O traidor combinara com eles este sinal: Aquele que eu beijar, é ele. Prendei-o!
44 And leaving them, he went again: and he prayed the third time, saying the selfsame word.	44 Aproximou-se imediatamente de Jesus e disse: Salve, Mestre. E beijou-o.
45 Then he cometh to his disciples, and saith to them: Sleep ye now and take your rest; behold the hour is at hand, and the Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of sinners.	45 Disse-lhe Jesus: É, então, para isso que vens aqui? Em seguida, adiantaram-se eles e lançaram mão em Jesus para prendê-lo.
46 Rise, let us go: behold he is at hand that will betray me.	46 Mas um dos companheiros de Jesus desembainhou a espada e feriu um servo do sumo sacerdote, decepando-lhe a orelha.
47 As he yet spoke, behold Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the ancients of the people.	47 Jesus, no entanto, lhe disse: Embainha tua espada, porque todos aqueles que usarem da espada, pela espada morrerão.
48 And he that betrayed him, gave them a sign, saying: Whomsoever I shall kiss, that is he, hold him fast.	48 Crês tu que não posso invocar meu Pai e ele não me enviaria imediatamente mais de doze legiões de anjos?
49 And forthwith coming to Jesus, he said: Hail, Rabbi. And he kissed him.	49 Mas como se cumpririam então as Escrituras, segundo as quais é preciso que seja assim?
50 And Jesus said to him: Friend, whereto art thou come? Then they came up, and laid hands on Jesus, and held him.	50 Depois, voltando-se para a turba, falou: Saístes armados de espadas e porretes para prender-me, como se eu fosse um malfeitor. Entretanto, todos os dias estava eu sentado entre vós ensinando no templo e não me prendestes.
51 And behold one of them that were with Jesus, stretching forth his hand, drew out his sword: and striking the servant of the high priest, cut off his ear.	51 Mas tudo isto aconteceu porque era necessário que se cumprissem os oráculos dos profetas. Então os discípulos o abandonaram e fugiram.
52 Then Jesus saith to him: Put up again thy sword into its place: for all that take the sword shall perish with the sword.	52 Os que haviam prendido Jesus levaram-no à casa do sumo sacerdote Caifás, onde estavam reunidos os escribas e os anciãos do povo.
53 Thinkest thou that I cannot ask my Father, and he will give me presently more than twelve legions of angels?	53 Pedro seguia-o de longe, até o pátio do sumo sacerdote. Entrou e sentou-se junto aos criados para ver como terminaria aquilo.
54 How then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that so it must be done?	54 Enquanto isso, os príncipes dos sacerdotes e todo o conselho procuravam um falso testemunho contra Jesus, a fim de o levarem à morte.
55 In that same hour Jesus said to the multitudes: You are come out as it were to a robber with swords and clubs to apprehend me. I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you laid not hands on me.	55 Mas não o conseguiram, embora se apresentassem muitas falsas testemunhas.
56 Now all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then the disciples all leaving him, fled.	56 Por fim, apresentaram-se duas testemunhas, que disseram: Este homem disse: Posso destruir o templo de Deus e reedificá-lo em três dias.
57 But they holding Jesus led him to Caiphas the high priest, where the scribes and the ancients were assembled.	57 Levantou-se o sumo sacerdote e lhe perguntou: Nada tens a responder ao que essa gente depõe contra ti?
58 And Peter followed him afar off, even to the court of the high priest. And going in, he sat with the servants, that he might see the end.	58 Jesus, no entanto, permanecia calado. Disse-lhe o sumo sacerdote: Por Deus vivo, conjuro-te que nos digas se és o Cristo, o Filho de Deus?
59 And the chief priests and the whole council sought false witness against Jesus, that they might put him to death:	59 Jesus respondeu: Sim. Além disso, eu vos declaro que vereis doravante o Filho do Homem sentar-se à direita do Todo-poderoso, e voltar sobre as nuvens do céu.
60 And they found not, whereas many false witnesses had come in. And last of all there came two false witnesses:	60 A estas palavras, o sumo sacerdote rasgou suas vestes, exclamando: Que necessidade temos ainda de testemunhas? Acabastes de ouvir a blasfêmia!
61 And they said: This man said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and after three days to rebuild it.	61 Qual o vosso parecer? Eles responderam: Merece a morte!
62 And the high priest rising up, said to him: Answerest thou nothing to the things which these witness against thee?	62 Cuspiram-lhe então na face, bateram-lhe com os punhos e deram-lhe tapas,
63 But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest said to him: I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us if thou be the Christ the Son of God.	63 dizendo: Adivinha, ó Cristo: quem te bateu?
64 Jesus saith to him: Thou hast said it. Nevertheless I say to you, hereafter you shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of the power of God, and coming in the clouds of heaven.	64 Enquanto isso, Pedro estava sentado no pátio. Aproximou-se dele uma das servas, dizendo: Também tu estavas com Jesus, o Galileu.
65 Then the high priests rent his garments, saying: He hath blasphemed; what further need have we of witnesses? Behold, now you have heard the blasphemy:	65 Mas ele negou publicamente, nestes termos: Não sei o que dizes.
66 What think you? But they answering, said: He is guilty of death.	66 Dirigia-se ele para a porta, a fim de sair, quando outra criada o viu e disse aos que lá estavam: Este homem também estava com Jesus de Nazaré.
67 Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him: and others struck his face with the palms of their hands,	67 Pedro, pela segunda vez, negou com juramento: Eu nem conheço tal homem.
68 Saying: Prophesy unto us, O Christ, who is he that struck thee?	68 Pouco depois, os que ali estavam aproximaram-se de Pedro e disseram: Sim, tu és daqueles; teu modo de falar te dá a conhecer.
69 But Peter sat without in the court: and there came to him a servant maid, saying: Thou also wast with Jesus the Galilean.	69 Pedro então começou a fazer imprecações, jurando que nem sequer conhecia tal homem. E, neste momento, cantou o galo.
70 But he denied before them all, saying: I know not what thou sayest.	70 Pedro recordou-se do que Jesus lhe dissera: Antes que o galo cante, negar-me-ás três vezes. E saindo, chorou amargamente.
71 And as he went out of the gate, another maid saw him, and she saith to them that were there: This man also was with Jesus of Nazareth.
72 And again he denied with an oath, I know not the man.
73 And after a little while they came that stood by, and said to Peter: Surely thou also art one of them; for even thy speech doth discover thee.
74 Then he began to curse and to swear that he knew not the man. And immediately the cock crew.
75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus which he had said: Before the cock crow, thou wilt deny me thrice. And going forth, he wept bitterly.
