1 And now, O Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, the soul in anguish, and the troubled spirit crieth to thee:	1 Per questo, il Signore ha realizzato la parola che pronunciò su di noi, sui nostri giudici che giudicavano Israele, sui nostri re e sui nostri principi, sugli uomini di Israele e di Giuda.
2 Hear, O Lord, and have mercy, for thou art a merciful God, and have pity on us: for we have sinned before thee.	2 Non avvenne mai sotto il cielo quanto egli compì in Gerusalemme, secondo quanto era scritto nella legge di Mosè,
3 For thou remainest for ever, and shall we perish everlastingly?	3 ossia che fra noi un uomo mangiasse le carni del proprio figlio e le carni della propria filia.
4 O Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, hear now the prayer of the dead of Israel, and of their children, that have sinned before thee, and have not hearkened to the voice of the Lord their God, wherefore evils have cleaved fast to us.	4 E li diede in mano a tutti i regni che ci stanno intorno, a scherno e a desolazione fra tutti i popoli vicini, fra i quali il Signore li ha dispersi.
5 Remember not the iniquities of our fathers, but think upon thy hand, and upon thy name at this time:	5 E divennero schiavi, non padroni, perché abbiamo peccato contro il Signore nostro Dio, non ascoltando la sua voce».
6 For thou art the Lord our God, and we will praise thee, O Lord:	6 Al Signore nostro Dio la giustizia, a noi e ai nostri padri la confusione dei volti, come avviene oggi.
7 Because for this end thou hast put thy fear in our hearts, to the intent that we should call upon thy name, and praise thee in our captivity, for we are converted from the iniquity of our fathers, who sinned before thee.	7 Quanto aveva predetto il Signore contro di noi, cioè tutti questi mali, ci è sopraggiunto;
8 And behold we are at this day in our captivity, whereby thou hast scattered us to be a reproach, and a curse, and an offence, according to all the iniquities of our fathers, who departed from thee, O Lord our God.	8 ma noi non abbiamo placato il volto del Signore, così da desistere ciascuno dal seguire i sentimenti del nostro cuore perverso.
9 Hear, O Israel, the commandments of life: give ear, that thou mayst learn wisdom.	9 E il Signore vigilò sopra i mali; il Signore li fece piombare su di noi, perché il Signore è giusto in tutte le opere che ci ha comandato.
10 How happeneth it, O Israel, that thou art in thy enemies' land?	10 Noi, invece, non abbiamo ascoltato la sua voce che ammoniva di seguire i comandamenti dati dal Signore.
11 Thou art grown old in a strange country, thou art defiled with the dead: thou art counted with them that go down into hell.	11 Ora, Signore Dio d’Israele, che facesti uscire dall’Egitto il tuo popolo con mano forte, con segni e con prodigi, con grande potenza e con braccio teso, rendendo famoso il tuo nome come lo è oggi,
12 Thou hast forsaken the fountain of wisdom :	12 noi abbiamo peccato, siamo stati empi e iniqui, o Signore nostro Dio, riguardo a tutti i tuoi precetti.
13 For if thou hadst walked in the way of God, thou hadst surely dwelt in peace for ever.	13 Si allontani il tuo sdegno da noi, perché siamo rimasti solo pochi fra le genti in mezzo alle quali ci hai disperso.
14 Learn where is wisdom, where is strength, where is understanding: that thou mayst know also where is length of days and life, where is the light of the eyes, and peace.	14 Esaudisci, o Signore, la nostra preghiera e la nostra supplica, liberaci per il tuo onore e facci trovare grazia agli occhi di coloro che ci hanno deportato,
15 Who hath found out her place? and who hath gone in to her treasures?	15 affinché tutta la terra sappia che tu sei il Signore nostro Dio e che il tuo nome è stato invocato su Israele e sulla sua discendenza.
16 Where are the princes of the nations, and they that rule over the beasts that are upon the earth?	16 Signore, guardaci dalla tua santa casa e prenditi cura di noi; porgi, o Signore, il tuo orecchio ed esaudiscici.
17 That take their diversion with the birds of the air.	17 Apri, o Signore, i tuoi occhi e vedi, perché non saranno i morti nell’Ade, il cui spirito è stato separato dalle loro viscere, a rendere gloria e omaggio alla giustizia del Signore;
18 That hoard up silver and gold, wherein men trust, and there is no end of their getting? who work in silver and are solicitous, and their works are unsearchable.	18 ma piuttosto l’anima rattristata oltre misura, chi cammina curvo e infermo, gli occhi che vengono meno e l’anima affamata ti renderanno gloria e giustizia, o Signore.
19 They are cut off, and are gone down to hell, and others are risen up in their place.	19 Poiché non per i meriti dei nostri padri e dei nostri re rivolgiamo la nostra invocazione a te, o Signore nostro Dio,
20 Young men have seen the light, and dwelt upon the earth: but the way of knowledge they have not known,	20 ma perché hai riversato su di noi il tuo furore e la tua ira, come avevi predetto per mezzo dei tuoi servitori i profeti, dicendo:
21 Nor have they understood the paths thereof, neither have their children received it, it is far from their face.	21 «Così dice il Signore: Piegate le vostre spalle e servite il re di Babilonia, così potrete restare nella terra che io ho concesso ai vostri padri.
22 It hath not been heard of in the land of Chanaan, neither hath it been seen in Theman.	22 Se poi non ascolterete la voce del Signore che comanda di servire il re di Babilonia,
23 The children of Agar also, that search after the wisdom that is of the earth, the merchants of Merrha, and of Theman, and the tellers of fables, and searchers of prudence and understanding: but the way of wisdom they have not known, neither have they remembered her paths.	23 farò cessare nelle città di Giuda e a Gerusalemme la voce della gioia e del giubilo, la voce dello sposo e della sposa, e la terra non recherà più tracce di abitanti».

27 The Lord chose not them, neither did they find the way of knowledge: therefore did they perish.	27 Eppure, hai agito con noi, o Signore nostro Dio, con ogni bontà e con tutta la tua grande misericordia,
28 And because they had not wisdom, they perished through their folly.	28 come avevi predetto per mezzo del tuo servitore Mosè, nel giorno in cui gli comandasti di scrivere la tua legge in presenza dei figli di Israele, dicendo:
29 Who hath gone up into heaven, and taken her, and brought her down from the clouds?	29 «Se non ascolterete la mia voce, in verità tutta questa numerosissima moltitudine sarà resa piccola fra le genti in mezzo alle quali la disperderò;
30 Who hath passed over the sea, and found her, and brought her preferably to chosen gold?	30 poiché so che non mi ascolteranno, essendo un popolo dalla dura cervice. Rientreranno in se stessi nella terra del loro esilio
31 There is none that is able to know her ways, nor that can search out her paths :	31 e riconosceranno che io sono il Signore loro Dio. Io darò loro un cuore e orecchie che ascoltino.
32 But he that knoweth all things, knoweth her, and hath found her out with his understanding: he that prepared the earth for evermore, and filled it with cattle and fourfooted beasts:	32 Essi mi loderanno nella terra del loro esilio e ricorderanno il mio nome;
33 He that sendeth forth light, and it goeth: and hath called it, and it obeyeth him with trembling.	33 abbandoneranno la loro ostinazione inflessibile e i loro propositi cattivi, ricordando la sorte dei loro padri, che peccarono contro il Signore.
34 And the stars have given light in their watches, and rejoiced:	34 lo li farò tornare nella terra che promisi con giuramento ai loro padri, ad Abramo, Isacco e Giacobbe, e ne riprenderanno possesso. Io li renderò numerosi e non diminuiranno più.
35 They were called, and they said: Here we are: and with cheerfuIness they have shined forth to him that made them.	35 Stabilirò con loro un’alleanza eterna, cioè io sarò il loro Dio ed essi il mio popolo né smuoverò più il mio popolo di Israele dalla terra che diedi loro».
36 This is our God, and there shall no other be accounted of in comparison of him.
37 He found out all the way of knowledge, and gave it to Jacob his servant, and to Israel his beloved.
38 Afterwards he was seen upon earth, and conversed with men.
