1 If any man steal an ox or a sheep, and kill or sell it: he shall restore five oxen for one ox, and four sheep for one sheep.	1 Si un voleur surpris la nuit en train de percer le mur est frappé à mort, son sang ne sera pas vengé.
2 If a thief be found breaking open a house or undermining it, and be wounded so as to die: he that slew him shall not be guilty of blood.	2 Mais si le soleil était déjà levé, son sang sera vengé. Celui qui a volé devra rembourser, et s’il n’a pas de quoi payer, il sera vendu en échange de ce qu’il a volé.
3 But if he did this when the sun is risen, he hath committed murder, and he shall die. If he have not wherewith to make restitution for the theft, he shall be sold.	3 Si l’on retrouve chez lui ce qu’il a volé, que ce soit un bœuf, un âne ou un agneau, il rendra le double.
4 If that which he stole be found with him, alive, either ox, or ass, or sheep: he shall restore double.	4 Si un homme laisse ses bêtes brouter dans son champ ou dans sa vigne et qu’elles broutent dans le champ d’un autre, il devra le dédommager selon ce que rapportait ce champ ou cette vigne.
5 If any man hurt a field or a vineyard, and put in his beast to feed upon that which is other men's: he shall restore the best of whatsoever he hath in his own field, or in his vineyard, according to the estimation of the damage.	5 Si un feu éclate, gagne les broussailles, et qu’une meule ou des épis ou un champ soient brûlés, celui qui a allumé l’incendie devra dédommager.
6 If a fire breaking out light upon thorns, and catch stacks of corn, or corn standing in the fields, he that kindled the fire shall make good the loss.	6 Si un homme donne à son prochain de l’argent ou des objets à garder dans sa maison, et qu’un vol y soit commis, le voleur, s’il est trouvé, rendra le double.
7 If a man deliver money, or any vessel unto his friend to keep, and they be stolen away from him that received them: if the thief be found he shall restore double:	7 Mais si le voleur n’est pas retrouvé, le maître de la maison s’approchera de Dieu et jurera que ce n’est pas lui qui a volé le bien de son prochain.
8 If the thief be not known, the master of the house shall be brought to the gods, and shall swear that he did not lay his hand upon his neighbour's goods,	8 Quelle que soit la chose volée, que ce soit un bœuf, un âne, un agneau, un vêtement ou toute autre chose, l’affaire sera portée devant Dieu et celui qui aura été condamné par Dieu rendra le double à son prochain.
9 To do any fraud, either in ox, or in ass, or sheep, or raiment, or any thing that may bring damage: the cause of both parties shall come to the gods: and if they give judgment, he shall restore double to his neighbour.	9 Si un homme a donné en garde à son prochain un âne, ou un bœuf, ou une brebis, ou toute autre bête, et que l’animal est mort, ou a été blessé ou volé sans témoin,
10 If a man deliver ass, ox, sheep, or any beast, to his neighbour's custody, and it die, or be hurt, or be taken by enemies, and no man saw it:	10 l’affaire sera réglée par un serment devant Yahvé. Celui qui gardait l’animal jurera qu’il n’a pas volé le bien de son prochain et le maître de l’animal se contentera du serment: l’autre n’aura pas à payer.
11 There shall be an oath between them, that he did not put forth his hand to his neighbour's goods: and the owner shall accept of the oath; and he shall not be compelled to make restitution.	11 Mais si l’animal est trouvé en sa possession, il en donnera le prix à son maître.
12 But if it were taken away by stealth, he shall make the loss good to the owner.	12 Si l’animal a été déchiré par des fauves, il en donnera les preuves et n’aura pas à payer pour l’animal mis en pièces.
13 If it were eaten by a beast, let him bring to him that which was slain, and he shall not make restitution.	13 Si quelqu’un a emprunté à son prochain un animal, et que cet animal soit blessé ou meure en l’absence de son maître, celui qui l’a emprunté devra en payer le prix.
14 If a man borrow of his neighbour any of these things, and it be hurt or die, the owner not being present, he shall be obliged to make restitution.	14 Mais si le propriétaire de l’animal était sur place, il n’aura rien à payer, l’autre se contentera de la location de la bête.
15 But if the owner be present, he shall not make restitution, especially if it were hired and came for the hire of his work.	15 Si un homme tombe amoureux d’une vierge qui n’est pas encore fiancée et couche avec elle, il en paiera le prix et elle sera sa femme.
16 If a man seduce a virgin not yet espoused, and lie with her: he shall endow her, and have her to wife.	16 Mais si son père refuse de la donner en mariage, l’autre versera en argent l’équivalent d’une dot.
17 If the maid's father will not give her to him, he shall give money according to the dowry, which virgins are wont to receive.	17 Tu ne laisseras pas vivre une sorcière.
18 Wizards thou shalt not suffer to live.	18 Celui qui couche avec une bête sera mis à mort.
19 Whosoever copulateth with a beast shall be put to death.	19 Celui qui offre des sacrifices en l’honneur de dieux autres que Yahvé, sera mis à mort.
20 He that sacrificeth to gods, shall be put to death, save only to the Lord.	20 Vous ne maltraiterez pas l’étranger et vous ne l’opprimerez pas, car vous avez été des étrangers en Égypte.
21 Thou shalt not molest a stranger, nor afflict him: for yourselves also were strangers in the land of Egypt.	21 Vous ne maltraiterez pas la veuve ni l’orphelin.
22 You shall not hurt a widow or an orphan.	22 Si vous les maltraitez et qu’ils crient vers moi, j’entendrai leur cri.
23 If you hurt them they will cry out to me, and I will hear their cry:	23 Alors ma colère s’enflammera contre vous: je vous ferai périr par l’épée, vos femmes resteront veuves, et vos fils orphelins.
24 And my rage shall be enkindled, and I will strike you with the sword, and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.	24 Si tu prêtes de l’argent à quelqu’un de ton peuple, à un pauvre qui vit au milieu de vous, tu ne te conduiras pas envers lui comme un créancier, tu ne lui imposeras pas d’intérêts.
25 If thou lend money to any of my people that is poor, that dwelleth with thee, thou shalt not be hard upon them as an extortioner, nor oppress them with usuries.	25 Si tu as pris en gage le manteau de ton prochain, tu le lui rendras au coucher du soleil,
26 If thou take of thy neighbour a garment in pledge, thou shalt give it him again before sunset.	26 car il n’a pas d’autre couverture, rien d’autre que ce manteau pour se couvrir: et comment dormira-t-il? Si jamais il crie vers moi, je l’entendrai, car moi j’ai pitié.
27 For that same is the only thing wherewith he is covered, the clothing of his body, neither hath he any other to sleep in: if he cry to me, I will hear him, because I am compassionate.	27 Tu ne blasphèmeras pas le Nom de Dieu et tu ne maudiras pas le chef de ton peuple.
28 Thou shalt not speak ill of the gods, and the prince of thy people thou shalt not curse.	28 Tu m’offriras sans tarder la sève de ton champ et le jus de ton pressoir; tu me donneras le premier-né de tes fils.
29 Thou shalt not delay to pay thy tithes and thy firstfruits: thou shalt give the firstborn of thy sons to me.	29 Tu feras de même pour ton bœuf et pour ton petit bétail: durant sept jours ils resteront avec la mère, et le huitième jour tu me les offriras.
30 Thou shalt do the same with the firstborn of thy oxen also and sheep: seven days let it be with its dam, the eighth day thou shalt give it to me.	30 Vous serez pour moi un peuple saint. Vous ne mangerez pas la viande d’une bête mise en pièces dans les champs, mais vous la donnerez aux chiens.
31 You shall be holy men to me: the flesh that beasts have tasted of before, you shall not eat, but shall cast it to the dogs.
