1 But after this, when there was a festival of the Lord, and a good dinner was prepared in Tobias's house,	1 - Or dopo queste cose, essendo una solennità del Signore, e fattosi in casa di Tobia un buon pranzo,
2 He said to his son: Go, and bring some of our tribe that fear God, to feast with us.	2 disse egli al figliuolo: « Va' e conduci qualcuno della nostra tribù, timorato di Dio, perchè faccia banchetto con noi ».
3 And when he had gone, returning he told him, that one of the children of Israel lay slain in the street. And he forthwith leaped up from his place at the table, and left his dinner, and came fasting to the body:	3 Partitosi quegli, tornò raccontando che uno de' figli d'Israele giaceva assassinato su una piazza. Subito Tobia, alzatosi dal suo divano, e lasciato il pranzo, digiuno si recò a quel corpo,
4 And taking it up carried it privately to his house, that after the sun was down, he might bury him cautiously.	4 lo prese, e lo portò nascostamente nella sua casa, per dargli sepoltura segretamente dopo il tramonto del sole.
5 And when he had hid the body, he ate bread with mourning and fear,	5 Nascosto il cadavere, prese cibo piangendo e tremando,
6 Remembering the word which the Lord spoke by Amos the prophet: Your festival days shall be turned into lamentation and mourning.	6 ripensando alle parole dette dal Signore per bocca del profeta Amos: « Le vostre feste si cambieranno in lamenti ed in lutto ».
7 So when the sun was down, he went and buried him.	7 Quando poi il sole fu tramontato, andò e lo seppellì.
8 Now all his neighbours blamed him, saying: Once already commandment was given for thee to be slain because of this matter, and thou didst scarce escape the sentence of death, and dost thou again bury the dead?	8 Ora di ciò lo rimproveravano tutt' i suoi parenti, dicendogli: « Già per questa cosa fu dato ordine d'ucclderti, ed a fatica scampasti alla morte; ed ora di nuovo seppellisci i morti? ».
9 But Tobias fearing God more than the king, carried off the bodies of them that were slain, and hid them in his house, and at midnight buried them.	9 Ma Tobia, temendo più Iddio che il re, portava via i corpi degli uccisi, li nascondeva nella sua casa, e nel cuor della notte li seppelliva.
10 Now it happened one day, that being wearied with burying, he came to his house, and cast himself down by the wall and slept,	10 Accadde dunque un certo giorno che, stanco del lavoro della sepoltura, tornato a casa, si sdraiò presso il muro, e s'addormentò.
11 And as he was sleeping, hot dung out of a swallow's nest fell upon his eyes, and he was made blind.	11 Ora, mentre dormiva, da un nido di rondini gli cadde sugli occhi dello sterco caldo, e lo rese cieco.
12 Now this trial the Lord therefore permitted to happen to him, that an example might be given to posterity of his patience, as also of holy Job.	12 Questa prova permise il Signore che gli sopravvenisse, acciò i posteri avessero l'esempio della pazienza di lui, come di quella del santo Giobbe.
13 For whereas he had always feared God from his infancy, and kept his commandments, he repined not against God because the evil of blindness had befallen him,	13 Difatti, avendo sempre sin dall'infanzia temuto Dio ed osservato i suoi comandamenti, non si lamentò con Dio per essergli avvenuta la disgrazia di perder la vista;
14 But continued immoveable in the fear of God, giving thanks to God all the days of his life.	14 ma stette fermo nel timore di Dio, rendendo a Dio grazie in tutti i giorni della sua vita.
15 For as the kings insulted over holy Job: so his relations and kinsmen mocked at his life, saying:	15 Come al beato Giobbe facevano insulto 1 re, così questi parenti e prossimi di Tobia schernivano la sua condotta, dicendogli:
16 Where is thy hope, for which thou gavest alms, and buriedst the dead?	16 « Dov' è andata la tua speranza, per la quale davi elemosine, e seppellivi i morti?».
17 But Tobias rebuked them, saying: Speak not so:	17 Ma egli li sgridava, e' diceva loro: « Non dite così;
18 For we are the children of the saints, and look for that life which God will give to those that never change their faith from him.	18 perchè noi siamo figli di santi, ed aspettiamo la vita che Dio darà a quelli che non perdono mai la loro fede in lui ».
19 Now Anna his wife went daily to weaving work, and she brought home what she could get for their living by the labour of her hands.	19 Anna poi, sua moglie, lavorava ogni giorno al telaio, e col lavoro delle sue mani ricavava da vivere come poteva.
20 Whereby it came to pass, that she received a young kid, and brought it home:	20 Ora accadde che avendo preso un capretto, lo portò a casa.
21 And when her husband heard it bleating, he said: Take heed, lest perhaps it be stolen: restore ye it to its owners, for it is not lawful for us either to eat or to touch any thing that cometh by theft.	21 Ed il suo marito, sentendolo belare, disse: «Badate bene ch' e' non sìa rubato, e rendetelo a' suoi padroni; perchè non c' è permesso mangiare o toccare cosa alcuna rubata ».
22 At these words his wife being angry answered: It is evident thy hope is come to nothing, and thy alms now appear.	22 Al che la sua moglie incollerita rispose: « Proprio si vede che la tua speranza è stata vana, e si vede il frutto delle tue elemosine ».
23 And with these, and other such like words she upbraided him.	23 Con queste ed altre simili parole lo rimproverava.
