| 1 Porém (morto Barac) os filhos de Israel tornaram a fazer o mal diante do Senhor, que os entregou durante sete anos nas mãos dos Madianitas, | 1 The people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD gave them into the hand of Midian seven years. |
| 2 pelos quais foram muito oprimidos. Por medo a Madian, fizeram para si covas e cavernas nos montes, e lugares muito fortes para resistirem. | 2 And the hand of Midian prevailed over Israel; and because of Midian the people of Israel made for themselves the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves and the strongholds. |
| 3 Quando Israel tinha semeado, vinham os Mudinnitas, os Amalecitas e os outros povos orientais, | 3 For whenever the Israelites put in seed the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the East would come up and attack them; |
| 4 e, pondo as tendas junto deles, talavam tudo quanto ainda estava em erva (desde o Jordão) até à entrada de Gaza, e não deixavam aos Israelitas nada do necessário à vida, nem ovelhas, nem bois, nem jumentos. | 4 they would encamp against them and destroy the produce of the land, as far as the neighborhood of Gaza, and leave no sustenance in Israel, and no sheep or ox or ass. |
| 5 Eles vinham com todos os seus rebanhos e tendas, como nuvem de gafanhotos, e casa multidão inumerável de homens e camelos cobria todas as coisas, destruindo tudo o que tocava. | 5 For they would come up with their cattle and their tents, coming like locusts for number; both they and their camels could not be counted; so that they wasted the land as they came in. |
| 6 Israel foi muito humilhado na presença dos Madianitas. | 6 And Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the people of Israel cried for help to the LORD. |
| 7 Quando os israelitas clamaram ao Senhor, pedindo socorro contra os Madianitas, | 7 When the people of Israel cried to the LORD on account of the Midianites, |
| 8 o Senhor mandou-lhes um profeta, que lhes disse; Eis o que diz o Senhor Deus de Israel: Eu vos fiz sair do Egipto e vos tirei da casa da escravidão, | 8 the LORD sent a prophet to the people of Israel; and he said to them, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: I led you up from Egypt, and brought you out of the house of bondage; |
| 9 livrei-vos do poder dos Egípcios e de todos os inimigos, que vos afligiam; lancei-os fora à vossa chegada e entreguei-vos a sua terra. | 9 and I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians, and from the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out before you, and gave you their land; |
| 10 Nessa ocasião, disse-vos: Eu sou o Senhor vosso Deus, não temais os deuses dos Amorreus, em cuja terra habitais. E vós não quisestes ouvir a minha voz. | 10 and I said to you, 'I am the LORD your God; you shall not pay reverence to the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.' But you have not given heed to my voice." |
| 11 Depois (destas palavras) veio o anjo do Senhor e sentou-se debaixo de um terebinto, que havia em Efra e pertencia a Joás, pai da família de Ezri. Estando Gedeão, seu filho, sacudindo e limpando o trigo no lagar, para o esconder dos Madianitas, | 11 Now the angel of the LORD came and sat under the oak at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, as his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press, to hide it from the Midianites. |
| 12 o anjo do Senhor apareceu-Ihe e disse: O Senhor é contigo, valente herói. | 12 And the angel of the LORD appeared to him and said to him, "The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor." |
| 13 Gedeão disse-lhe: Se o Senhor é connosco, peço-te, senhor meu, (que me digas) por que nos aconteceram todas estas coisas? Onde estão aquelas suas maravilhas, que nossos pais nos contaram, dizendo: O Senhor tirou-nos do Egipto? Agora o Senhor abandonou-nos e entregou-nos nas mãos do Madianitas. | 13 And Gideon said to him, "Pray, sir, if the LORD is with us, why then has all this befallen us? And where are all his wonderful deeds which our fathers recounted to us, saying, 'Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt?' But now the LORD has cast us off, and given us into the hand of Midian." |
| 14 Então (o anjo que representava) o Senhor olhou para ele e disse: Vai com essa tua força e livra Israel do poder dos Madianitas. Sabe que sou eu quem te manda. | 14 And the LORD turned to him and said, "Go in this might of yours and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?" |
| 15 Ele respondeu e disse: Diz-me, te peço, meu Senhor, como poderei eu livrar Israel? A minha família é a última de Manassés, e eu sou o menor na casa de meu pai. | 15 And he said to him, "Pray, Lord, how can I deliver Israel? Behold, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family." |
| 16 O Senhor disse-lhe: Eu serei contigo, e tu derrotarás os Madianitas, como se fossem um só homem. | 16 And the LORD said to him, "But I will be with you, and you shall smite the Midianites as one man." |
| 17 Ele replicou: Se eu achei graça diante de ti, dá-me um sinal por onde conheça que és tu quem me fala, | 17 And he said to him, "If now I have found favor with thee, then show me a sign that it is thou who speakest with me. |
| 18 e não te vás daqui, antes que eu volte, trazendo um sacrifício, e to ofereça. Ele respondeu: Eu esperarei a tua volta. | 18 Do not depart from here, I pray thee, until I come to thee, and bring out my present, and set it before thee." And he said, "I will stay till you return." |
| 19 Gedeão foi a sua casa, cozeu um cabrito e pães ázimos duma medida de farinha, e, pondo a carne num cesto e deitando o caldo da carne numa panela, levou tudo ao lugar debaixo do terebinto e ofereceu-lho. | 19 So Gideon went into his house and prepared a kid, and unleavened cakes from an ephah of flour; the meat he put in a basket, and the broth he put in a pot, and brought them to him under the oak and presented them. |
| 20 O anjo do Senhor disse-lhe: Toma a carne e os pães ázimos, põe-nos sobre aquela pedra, e derrama-lhes por cima o caldo. Tendo-o assim feito Gedeão, | 20 And the angel of God said to him, "Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and put them on this rock, and pour the broth over them." And he did so. |
| 21 o anjo do Senhor estendeu a ponta da vara, que tinha na mão, tocou a carne e os pães ázimos, e saiu fogo da pedra, que consumiu a carne e os pães ázimos; e o anjo do Senhor desapareceu de seus olhos. | 21 Then the angel of the LORD reached out the tip of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes; and there sprang up fire from the rock and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of the LORD vanished from his sight. |
| 22 Vendo Gedeão que era um anjo do Senhor, disse: Ai de mim, Senhor meu Deus, que vi o anjo do Senhor face a face. | 22 Then Gideon perceived that he was the angel of the LORD; and Gideon said, "Alas, O Lord GOD! For now I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face." |
| 23 O Senhor disse-lhe: A paz seja contigo; não temas, não morrerás. | 23 But the LORD said to him, "Peace be to you; do not fear, you shall not die." |
| 24 Gedeão edificou ali um altar ao Senhor, e chamou-o Paz do Senhor, (nome que conserva) até ao dia de hoje. Estando ele ainda em Efra, que pertence à família de Ezri, | 24 Then Gideon built an altar there to the LORD, and called it, The LORD is peace. To this day it still stands at Ophrah, which belongs to the Abiezrites. |
| 25 naquela noite disse-lhe o Senhor: Toma o touro de teu pai, e outro touro de sete anos, e destruirás o altar de Baal que é de teu pai, e corta o aschera, que cerca o altar; | 25 That night the LORD said to him, "Take your father's bull, the second bull seven years old, and pull down the altar of Baal which your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is beside it; |
| 26 edificarás um altar ao Senhor teu Deus em cima desta pedra, sobre a qual puseste antes o sacrifício, e tornarás o segundo touro, e o oferecerás em holocausto sobre um monte da lenha, que terás cortado do aschera. | 26 and build an altar to the LORD your God on the top of the stronghold here, with stones laid in due order; then take the second bull, and offer it as a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah which you shall cut down." |
| 27 Gedeão, tendo tomado dez homens dos seus servos, fez o que o Senhor lhe tinha ordenado; porém, temendo a família de seu pai e os homens daquela cidade, não o quis fazer de dia, mas executou tudo de noite. | 27 So Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had told him; but because he was too afraid of his family and the men of the town to do it by day, he did it by night. |
| 28 Os homens daquela cidade, tendo-se levantado pela manhã, viram o altar de Baal destruído, o aschera e o segundo touro posto sobre o altar, que acabava de ser erigido. | 28 When the men of the town rose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah beside it was cut down, and the second bull was offered upon the altar which had been built. |
| 29 Disseram uns para os outros: Quem fez isto? Averiguando o autor da obra, foi-lhes dito: Gedeão, filho de Joás, fez todas estas coisas. | 29 And they said to one another, "Who has done this thing?" And after they had made search and inquired, they said, "Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing." |
| 30 Disseram a Joás: Faz vir aqui teu filho, para que seja morto, porque destruiu o altar de Baal, e cortou o aschera. | 30 Then the men of the town said to Joash, "Bring out your son, that he may die, for he has pulled down the altar of Baal and cut down the Asherah beside it." |
| 31 Joás respondeu-Ihes: Porventura sois vós os vingadores de Baal, para combaterdes por ele? Aquele que é seu inimigo, morra antes que chegue o dia de amanhã; se ele é Deus, vingue-se daquele que destruiu o seu altar. | 31 But Joash said to all who were arrayed against him, "Will you contend for Baal? Or will you defend his cause? Whoever contends for him shall be put to death by morning. If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because his altar has been pulled down." |
| 32 Daquele dia em diante Gedeão foi chamado Jerobaal, por Joás ter dito: Vingue-se Baal daquele que destruiu o seu altar. | 32 Therefore on that day he was called Jerubbaal, that is to say, "Let Baal contend against him," because he pulled down his altar. |
| 33 Entretanto todos os Madianitas, os Amalecitas e os povos do oriente, se juntaram e, tendo passado o Jordão, acamparam no vale de Jezrael. | 33 Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the East came together, and crossing the Jordan they encamped in the Valley of Jezreel. |
| 34 O espírito do Senhor apoderou-se de Gedeão, o qual, tocando a trombeta, convocou a casa de Abiezer, para que o seguisse. | 34 But the Spirit of the LORD took possession of Gideon; and he sounded the trumpet, and the Abiezrites were called out to follow him. |
| 35 E enviou mensageiros por toda a tribo de Manassés, que também o seguiu; e enviou outros mensageiros às tribos de Aser, de Zabulon e Neftali, que foram juntar-se com ele. | 35 And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; and they too were called out to follow him. And he sent messengers to Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali; and they went up to meet them. |
| 36 Gedeão disse a Deus: Se tu salvas Israel, por meio da minha mão, como disseste, | 36 Then Gideon said to God, "If thou wilt deliver Israel by my hand, as thou hast said, |
| 37 eu porei na eira este velo de lã; se o orvalho cair só no velo, e toda a terra ficar seca, reconhecerei nisso que salvarás Israel pela minha mão, como prometeste. | 37 behold, I am laying a fleece of wool on the threshing floor; if there is dew on the fleece alone, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that thou wilt deliver Israel by my hand, as thou hast said." |
| 38 Assim sucedeu. Levantando-se, ainda de noite, espremeu o velo e encheu um vaso de orvalho. | 38 And it was so. When he rose early next morning and squeezed the fleece, he wrung enough dew from the fleece to fill a bowl with water. |
| 39 Gedeão disse de novo a Deus: Não se acenda contra mim o teu furor, se eu ainda fizer outra prova, pedindo um sinal no velo. Peço que só o velo esteja seco, e toda a terra molhada de orvalho. | 39 Then Gideon said to God, "Let not thy anger burn against me, let me speak but this once; pray, let me make trial only this once with the fleece; pray, let it be dry only on the fleece, and on all the ground let there be dew." |
| 40 Naquela noite o Senhor fez como (Gedeão) lhe tinha pedido: só o velo ficou enxuto, havendo orvalho por toda a terra. | 40 And God did so that night; for it was dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground there was dew. |
