| 1 Todo pontífice, tomado dentre os homens, é constituído a favor dos homens naquelas coisas que se referem a Deus, para que ofereça dons e sacrifícios pelos pecados, | 1 For every high priest taken from among men, is ordained for men in the things that appertain to God, that he may offer up gifts and sacrifices for sins: |
| 2 o qual se possa condoer daqueles que ignoram e erram, porque também está cercado de enfermidade; | 2 Who can have compassion on them that are ignorant and that err: because he himself also is compassed with infirmity. |
| 3 por isso deve oferecer sacrifícios pelos seus próprios pecados, como pelos do povo. | 3 And therefore he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. |
| 4 E nenhum se arroga esta honra, senão o que é chamado por Deus, como Aarão. | 4 Neither doth any man take the honour to himself, but he that is called by God, as Aaron was. |
| 5 Por isso mesmo, Cristo não se deu a si mesmo a glória de ser pontífice, mas recebeu-a daquele que lhe disse: Tu és meu Filho, eu hoje te gerei (Ps. 2, 7). | 5 So Christ also did not glorify himself, that he might be made a high priest: but he that said unto him: Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. |
| 6 Como também diz noutro lugar: Tu és sacerdote eternamente, segundo a ordem de Melquisedeque (Ps. 109, 4). | 6 As he saith also in another place: Thou art a priest for ever, according to the order of Melchisedech. |
| 7 Nos dias da sua vida mortal, oferecendo, com grande brado e com lágrimas, preces e súplicas, ao que o podia salvar da morte (pela ressurreição), foi atendido pela sua piedade (para com Deus), | 7 Who in the days of his flesh, with a strong cry and tears, offering up prayers and supplications to him that was able to save him from death, was heard for his reverence. |
| 8 e, embora fosse Filho de Deus, (e conhecesse tudo), aprendeu (por experiência própria) a obediência pelas coisas que sofreu; | 8 And whereas indeed he was the Son of God, he learned obedience by the things which he suffered: |
| 9 consumado em perfeição, tornou-se a causa da salvação eterna para todos os que lhe obedecem, | 9 And being consummated, he became, to all that obey him, the cause of eternal salvation. |
| 10 sendo chamado por Deus pontífice segundo a ordem de Melquisedeque. | 10 Called by God a high priest according to the order of Melchisedech. |
| 11 Sobre este assunto (do sacerdócio de Cristo) tínhamos muitas coisas que dizer, e coisas difíceis de explicar, porque vos tornastes tardos para compreender. | 11 Of whom we have much to say, and hard to be intelligibly uttered: because you are become weak to hear. |
| 12 Com efeito, devendo vós ser já mestres, atendendo ao tempo (decorrido desde que vos convertestes), tendes ainda necessidade de que novamente vos ensinem os primeiros rudimentos da palavra de Deus: tornaste-vos tais que tendes necessidade de leite, e não de alimento sólido. | 12 For whereas for the time you ought to be masters, you have need to be taught again what are the first elements of the words of God: and you are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. |
| 13 Ora o que está ainda a leite, é incapaz da doutrina da justiça, porque é menino. | 13 For every one that is a partaker of milk, is unskillful in the word of justice: for he is a little child. |
| 14 O alimento sólido, porém, é para os perfeitos, para aqueles que pelo hábito têm os sentidos exercitados para discernir o bem e o mal. | 14 But strong meat is for the perfect; for them who by custom have their senses exercised to the discerning of good and evil. |
