| 1 Tendo, pois, estas promessas, meus carissimos, purifiquemo-nos de toda a imundície da carne e do espírito, levando ao fim a santificação no temor de Deus. | 1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of the flesh and of the spirit, perfecting sactification in the fear of God. |
| 2 Recebei-nos dentro do vosso coração. A ninguém temos ofendido, a ninguém temos arruinado, a ninguém temos explorado. | 2 Receive us. We have injured no man, we have corrupted no man, we have overreached no man. |
| 3 Não digo isto para vos condenar, pois já vos declarei que estais nos nossos corações, para a vida e para a morte. | 3 I speak not this to your condemnation. For we have said before, that you are in our hearts, to die together, and to live together. |
| 4 Tenho muita confiança em vós, muito me glorio de vós, estou cheio de consolação, inundado de alegria no meio de todas as nossas tribulações. | 4 Great is my confidence for you, great is my glorying for you. I am filled with comfort: I exceedingly abound with joy in all our tribulation. |
| 5 Em realidade, desde a nossa chegada à Macedónia, a nossa carne nenhum repouso teve, antes sofremos toda a tribulação: no exterior, combates; no interior, temores. | 5 For also when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we suffered all tribulation; combats without, fears within. |
| 6 Deus, porém, que consola os humildes, consolou-nos com a chegada de Tito ; | 6 But God, who comforteth the humble, comforted us by the coming of Titus. |
| 7 e, não sòmente com a sua chegada, mas também com a consolação que recebeu de vós, referindo-me ele o vosso desejo (de me ver), o vosso pranto, o vosso zelo por mim, de sorte que a minha alegria aumentou. | 7 And not by his coming only, but also by the consolation, wherewith he was comforted in you, relating to us your desire, your mourning, your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced the more. |
| 8 Desta forma, embora eu vos tenha entristecido com a minha carta, não me arrependo disso; se bem que (a princípio) tenha sentido pesar, vendo que tal carta (ainda que por breve tempo) vos entristeceu, | 8 For although I made you sorrowful by my epistle, I do not repent; and if I did repent, seeing that the same epistle (although but for a time) did make you sorrowful; |
| 9 agora folgo, não de vos ter entristecido, mas de que a vossa tristeza vos levou à penitência. Entristecestes-vos segundo Deus, de sorte que em nada recebestes detrimento de nós, | 9 Now I am glad: not because you were made sorrowful; but because you were made sorrowful unto penance. For you were made sorrowful according to God, that you might suffer damage by us in nothing. |
| 10 porque a tristeza, que é segundo Deus, produz uma penitência estável para a salvação, pelo contrário, a tristeza do século produz a morte (eterna). | 10 For the sorrow that is according to God worketh penance, steadfast unto salvation; but the sorrow of the world worketh death. |
| 11 Vede, pois, o que produziu em vós essa tristeza, segundo Deus: quanta solicitude (em reparar a vossa negligência), que justificação, que indignação, que temor, que desejo (de remediar o mal), que zelo, que (desejo de) severidade (pela injúria feita à Igreja)! Vós mostrastes em tudo que éreis inocentes neste negócio. | 11 For behold this selfsame thing, that you were made sorrowful according to God, how great carefulness it worketh in you; yea defence, yea indignation, yea fear, yea desire, yea zeal, yea revenge: in all things you have shewed yourselves to be undefiled in the matter. |
| 12 Portanto, se vos escrevi, não o fiz por causa do que fez a injúria, nem por causa do que a padeceu, mas sim para que a vossa solicitude por nós se manifestasse, entre vós, diante de Deus. | 12 Wherefore although I wrote to you, it was not for his sake that I did the wrong, nor for him that suffered it; but to manifest our carefulness that we have for you |
| 13 Eis o que nos consolou. Mas, na nossa consolação, ainda mais nos alegramos pela alegria de Tito, porque o seu espírito foi tranquilizado por todos vós. | 13 Before God: therefore we were comforted. But in our consolation, we did the more abundantly rejoice for the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed by you all. |
| 14 Se, diante dele, me mostrei um pouco orgulhoso de vós, não me envergonho disso; pelo contrário, como tudo o que vos temos dito foi com verdade, assim também o elogio, que de vós fizemos a Tito, viu-se (pelos factos) ser verdade. | 14 And if I have boasted any thing to him of you, I have not been put to shame; but as we have spoken all things to you in truth, so also our boasting that was made to Titus is found a truth. |
| 15 Por isso a sua ternura por vós é cada vez maior, ao lembrar-se da obediência de todos vós e de como o recebestes com temor e tremor, | 15 And his bowels are more abundantly towards you; remembering the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling you have received him. |
| 16 Eu me alegro de poder contar em tudo convosco. | 16 I rejoice that in all things I have confidence in you. |
