| 2 Levanta-te e vai a Nínive, a grande cidade, e faze nela a pregação que eu te ordenar. | 2 "Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you." |
| 3 Jonas levantou-se e foi a Nínive, segundo a ordem do Senhor. Ora Nínive era uma cidade grande, diante de Deus, que tinha três dias de caminho. | 3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days' journey in breadth. |
| 4 Jonas começou a entrar na cidade, andando por ela um dia. Clamava assim: Daqui a quarenta dias será Nínive destruída. | 4 Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's journey. And he cried, "Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!" |
| 5 Os Nínivitas creram em Deus, ordenaram um jejum público e vestiram-se de saco, desde o maior ao menor. | 5 And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them. |
| 6 Chegada esta nova ao rei de Nínive, ele levantou-se do seu trono, tirou o seu manto, cobriu-se de saco e sentou-se sobre a cinza. | 6 Then tidings reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, removed his robe, and covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. |
| 7 Depois fez-se clamar por seus príncipes: Os homens e os animais, os bois e as ovelhas não comam nada, não sejam levados a pastar, nem bebam água. | 7 And he made proclamation and published through Nineveh, "By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything; let them not feed, or drink water, |
| 8 Os homens e os animais cubram-se de saco e clamem ao Senhor com força; cada um se converta do seu mau caminho e da violência que há nas suas mãos. | 8 but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and let them cry mightily to God; yea, let every one turn from his evil way and from the violence which is in his hands. |
| 9 Quem sabe se Deus se virá a arrepender, se aplacará o ardor da sua ira, de sorte que não pereçamos? | 9 Who knows, God may yet repent and turn from his fierce anger, so that we perish not?" |
| 10 Deus viu as suas obras (de penitência), como se convertiam do seu mau caminho, e, arrependendo-se do mal que tinha resolvido fazer-lhes, não lho fez. | 10 When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God repented of the evil which he had said he would do to them; and he did not do it. |
