| 1 Foi dirigida a palavra do Senhor a Jonas, filho de Amati, a qual dizia: | 1 The word of Yahweh was addressed to Jonah son of Amittai: |
| 2 Levanta-te, vai a Nínive, a grande cidade, e prega nela, porque a sua malícia subiu até à minha presença. | 2 'Up!' he said, 'Go to Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim to them that their wickedness has forced itselfupon me.' |
| 3 Jonas, porém, pôs-se a caminho, resolvido a ir para Tarsis, para fugir da face do Senhor. Chegou a Jope, onde encontrou um navio que ia para Tarsis; pagou a sua passagem e entrou nele para ir com os outros passageiros a Tarsis, fugindo da face do Senhor. | 3 Jonah set about running away from Yahweh, and going to Tarshish. He went down to Jaffa and found aship bound for Tarshish; he paid his fare and boarded it, to go with them to Tarshish, to get away from Yahweh. |
| 4 Porém o Senhor enviou sobre o mar nm vento furioso, levantou no mar uma tão grande tempestade, que estava o navio em perigo de se fazer era pedaços, | 4 But Yahweh threw a hurricane at the sea, and there was such a great storm at sea that the shipthreatened to break up. |
| 5 Então os marinheiros temeram, clamando cada um ao seu deus, e alijaram ao mar toda a carga que traziam no navio para o aliviarem. Entretanto Jonas tinha descido ao porão do navio e lá dormia um profundo sono. | 5 The sailors took fright, and each of them called on his own god, and to lighten the ship they threw thecargo overboard. Jonah, however, had gone below, had lain down in the hold and was fast asleep, |
| 6 Foi ter com ele o capitão e disse-lhe: Como é que estás aqui a dormir? Levanta-te, invoca o teu Deus, a ver se porventura se lembra de nós e nos livra da morte. | 6 when the boatswain went up to him and said, 'What do you mean by sleeping? Get up! Call on yourgod! Perhaps he wil spare us a thought and not leave us to die.' |
| 7 Em seguida disseram uns para os outros: Vinde e deitemos sortes, para sabermos por que nos acontece este mal. Lançaram sortes, e caiu a sorte sobre Jonas. | 7 Then they said to each other, 'Come on, let us draw lots to find out who is to blame for bringing us thisbad luck.' So they cast lots, and the lot pointed to Jonah. |
| 8 Então disseram-lhe: Declara-nos qual é a causa deste perigo em que estamos. Qual a tua ocupação? Donde vens? Qual a tua terra? A que povo pertences? | 8 Then they said to him, 'Tel us, what is your business? Where do you come from? What is your country?What is your nationality?' |
| 9 Jonas respondeu-lhes: Sou Hebreu e adoro o Senhor, Deus do céu, que fez o mar e a terra. | 9 He replied, 'I am a Hebrew, and I worship Yahweh, God of Heaven, who made both sea and dry land.' |
| 10 Então os homens ficaram possuídos de grande medo e disseram-lhe: Por que fizeste isto? Com efeito compreenderam que ele ia fugindo da face do Senhor, pois, lho havia declarado. | 10 The sailors were seized with terror at this and said, 'Why ever did you do this?' since they knew that hewas trying to escape from Yahweh, because he had told them so. |
| 11 Disseram-lhe: Que te havemos de fazer, para que consigamos calar o mar? Porque o mar se elevava e embravecia cada vez mais. | 11 They then said, 'What are we to do with you, to make the sea calm down for us?' For the sea wasgrowing rougher and rougher. |
| 12 (Jonas) respondeu-lhes: Pegai em mim e lançai-me ao mar, e o mar se calará, porque sei que por minha causa é que vos sobreveio esta grande tempestade. | 12 He replied, 'Take me and throw me into the sea, and then it wil calm down for you. I know it is my faultthat this great storm has struck you.' |
| 13 Entretanto remavam os marinheiros para ver se conseguiam ganhar terra; mas não podiam, porque o mar cada vez mais se empolava e se embravecia contra eles. | 13 The sailors rowed hard in an effort to reach the shore, but in vain, since the sea was growing rougherand rougher. |
| 14 Então clamaram ao Senhor, dizendo: Senhor, que este homem não seja causa da nossa perdição; não faças cair sobre nós um sangue inocente, porque foste tu, Senhor, que isto fizeste como te aprouve. | 14 So at last they cal ed on Yahweh and said, 'O, Yahweh, do not let us perish for the sake of this man'slife, and do not hold us responsible for causing an innocent man's death; for you, Yahweh, have acted as yousaw fit.' |
| 15 Depois pegaram em Jonas e lançaram-no ao mar; no mesmo ponto cessou a fúria do mar. | 15 And taking hold of Jonah they threw him into the sea; and the sea stopped raging. |
| 16 Então conceberam estes homens um grande temor ao Senhor, ofereceram-lhe um sacrifício e fizeram-lhe votos. | 16 At this, the men were seized with dread of Yahweh; they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh and made vowsto him. |
