| 1 Eu, Nabucodonosor, estava tranquilo em minha casa, feliz no meu palácio. | 1 Nabuchodonosor the king, to all peoples, nations, and tongues, that dwell in all the earth, peace be multiplied unto you. |
| 2 Tive um sonho que me atemorizou; estando na minha cama, os meus pensamentos e as visões da minha cabeça perturbaram-me. | 2 The most high God hath wrought signs and wonders toward me. It hath seemed good to me therefore to publish |
| 3 Por esta causa publiquei um decreto para que viessem à minha presença todos os sábios de Babilônia, a fim de me darem a explicação do meu sonho. | 3 His signs, because they are great: and his wonders, because they are mighty: and his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, I and his power to all generations. |
| 4 Então vieram à minha presença os adivinhos, os magos, os Caldeus e os feiticeiros, e eu contei-lhes o meu sonho mas eles não me deram a sua interpretação. | 4 I Nabuchodonosor was at rest in my house, and flourishing in my palace: |
| 5 Finalmente apresentou-se diante de mim Daniel, que tem por nome Baltasar, segundo o nome do meu deus, o qual tem em si mesmo o espírito dos deuses santos, ao qual expus assim o meu sonho: | 5 I saw a dream that affrighted me: and my thoughts in my bed, and the visions of my head troubled me. |
| 6 Baltasar, príncipe dos adivinhos, como sei que tens em ti o espírito dos deuses santos e que nenhum segredo te é impenetrável expõe-me as visões do sonho que tive e dá-me a sua interpretação. | 6 Then I set forth a decree, that all the wise men of Babylon should be brought in before me, and that they should shew me the interpretation of the dream. |
| 7 As visões da minha cabeça, que tive na minha cama, foram assim: Estava a olhar, e eis (que vi) no meio da terra uma árvore altíssima. | 7 Then came in the diviners, the wise men, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers, and I told the dream before them: but they did not shew me the interpretation thereof: |
| 8 A árvore cresceu e pôs-se forte; a sua altura chegava até ao céu: via-se das extremidades de toda a terra. | 8 Till their colleague Daniel came in before me, whose name is Baltassar, according to the name of my god, who hath in him the spirit of the holy gods: and I told the dream before him. |
| 9 A sua folhagem era formosa e os seus frutos copiosos; dela todos se podiam sustentar; os animais dos campos acolhiam-se à sua sombra, as aves do céu pousavam sobre os seus ramos, e dela se sustentava toda a carne. | 9 Baltassar, prince of the diviners, because I know that thou hast in thee the spirit of the holy gods, and that no secret is impossible to thee: tell me the visions of my dreams that I have seen, and the interpretation of them. |
| 10 Eu contemplava estas visões da minha cabeça, no meu leito, e eis que um (anjo) vigilante, um santo, desceu do céu. | 10 This was the vision of my head in my bed: I saw, and behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and the height thereof was exceeding great. |
| 11 Clamou com voz forte: Deitai abaixo esta árvore, cortai-lhe os ramos, fazei-lhe cair as folhas e atirai para longe os seus frutos; fujam os animais, que estão debaixo dela, e as aves que estão sobre os seus ramos. | 11 The tree was great, and strong: and the height thereof reached unto heaven: the sight thereof was even to the ends of all the earth. |
| 12 Deixai todavia na terra o toco com as suas raízes; seja ele atado com cadeias de ferro e de bronze entre as ervas dos campos, seja molhado com o orvalho do céu e tenha, com os animais, parte na erva da terra. | 12 Its leaves were most beautiful, and its fruit exceeding much: and in it was food for all: under it dwelt cattle, and beasts, and in the branches thereof the fowls of the air had their abode: and all flesh did eat of it. |
| 13 O seu coração não seja mais um coração de homem, dê-se-lhe um coração de animal, e passem (permanecendo ele neste estado) sete tempos por cima dele. | 13 I saw in the vision of my head upon my bed, and behold a watcher, and a holy one came down from heaven. |
| 14 Por sentença dos (anjos) vigilantes assim foi decretado, esta decisão é uma ordem dos santos, para que conheçam os viventes que o Altíssimo tem o domínio sobre a realeza dos homens, que a dá a quem quer e eleva a ela (se quiser) o mais humilde dos homens. | 14 He cried aloud, and said thus: Cut down the tree, and chop off the branches thereof: shake off its leaves, and scatter its fruits: let the beasts fly away that are under it, and the birds from its branches. |
| 15 Eis o sonho que eu. rei Nabucodonosor, tive. Tu, Baltasar, interpreta-mo, porque nenhum dos sábios do meu reino me pode dizer o que significa; tu, porém, podes, porque o espírito dos deuses santos está em ti. | 15 Nevertheless leave the stump of its roots in the earth, and let it be tied with a band of iron, and of brass, among the grass, that is without, and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let its portion be with the wild beasts in the grass of the earth. |
| 16 Então Daniel, por outro nome Baltasar, ficou, de momento embaraçado, e os seus pensamentos perturbavam-no. Mas o rei, tomando a palavra, disse-lhe: Baltasar, não te turbe o sonho, nem a sua interpretação. Baltasar respondeu-lhe: Meu senhor, (oxalá que) o sonho seja contra os que te têm ódio, e a sua interpretação contra os teus inimigos. | 16 Let his heart be changed from man's, and let a beast's heart be given him; and let seven times pass over him. |
| 17 A árvore que tu viste alta e robusta, que chegava até ao céu e se via de toda a terra, | 17 This is the decree by the sentence of the watchers, and the word And demand of the holy ones; till the living know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men; and he will give it to whomsoever it shall please him, and he will appoint the basest man over it. |
| 18 (essa árvore) de folhagem formosa e frutos abundantes, na qual todos achavam com que se sustentar, a cuja sombra os animais do campo se acolhiam e em cujos ramos as aves do céu pousavam, | 18 I king Nabuchodonosor saw this dream: thou, therefore, O Baltassar, tell me quickly the interpretation: for all the wise men of my kingdom axe not able to declare the meaning of it to me: but thou art able, because the spirit of the holy gods is in thee. |
| 19 (essa árvore) és tu, ó rei, que te engrandeceste e te fizeste poderoso, cuja grandeza crescente chegou até ao céu, cujo poder se estendeu até às extremidades da terra. | 19 Then Daniel, whose name was Baltassar, began silently to think within himself for about one hour: and his thoughts troubled him. But the king answering, said: Baltassar, let not the dream and the interpretation thereof trouble thee. Baltassar answered, and said: My lord, the dream be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thy enemies. |
| 20 E quanto ao ter o rei visto o (anjo) vigilante, o santo, baixar do céu e dizer: Deitai abaixo esta árvore e cortai-lhe os ramos, mas deixai na terra o toco com as suas raízes, atado com cadeias de ferro e de bronze entre as ervas dos campos; que seja molhado com o orvalho do céu, e o seu pasto seja (comum) com os animais dos campos, até se terem passado sete tempos por cima dele — eis a interpretação, ó rei; | 20 The tree which thou sawest which was high and strong, whose height reached to the skies, and the sight thereof into all tire earth: |
| 21 É uma sentença do Altíssimo, que foi pronunciada contra o rei, meu senhor: | 21 And the branches thereof were most beautiful, and its fruit exceeding much, and in it was food for all, under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and the birds of the air had their abode in its branches. |
| 22 Lançar-te-ão fora da companhia dos homens, e a tua habitação será com os animais dos campos; comerás erva como os bois e serás molhado com o orvalho do céu; passar-se-ão assim sete tempos por cima de ti até que reconheças que o Altíssimo domina sobre a realeza dos homens, e a dá a quem lhe apraz. | 22 It is thou, O king, who art grown great and become mighty: for thy greatness hath grown, and hath reached to heaven, and thy power unto the ends of the earth. |
| 23 Quanto à ordem de deixar o toco com as raízes da árvore, (isso significa que) a tua realeza te voltará a ser dada, quando tiveres reconhecido que a soberania vem do céu. | 23 And whereas the king saw a watcher, and a holy one come down from heaven, and say: Cut down the tree and destroy it, but leave the stump of the roots thereof in the earth, and let it be bound with iron and brass among the grass without, and let it be sprinkled with the dew of heaven, and let his feeding be with the wild beasts, till seven times pass over him. |
| 24 Portanto segue, ó rei, o conselho que te dou: resgata os teus pecados com boas obras, as tuas iniquidades pela misericórdia para com os pobres; talvez (assim) se prolongue a tua segurança. | 24 This is the interpretation of the sentence of the most High, which is come upon my lord the king. |
| 25 Todas estas coisas aconteceram ao rei Nabucodonosor. | 25 They shall cast thee out from among men, and thy dwelling shall be with cattle and with wild beasts, and thou shalt eat grass as an ox, and shalt be wet with the dew of heaven: and seven times shall pass over thee, till thou know that the most High ruleth over the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will. |
| 26 Ao cabo de doze meses, passeando ele no palácio de Babilônia, | 26 But whereas he commanded, that the stump of the roots thereof, that is, of the tree, should be left: thy kingdom shall remain to thee after thou shalt have known that power is from heaven. |
| 27 começou a falar deste modo: Não é esta aquela grande Babilônia, que edifiquei para residência real, com a força do meu poder, para glória da minha majestade? | 27 Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to thee, and redeem thou thy sins with alms, and thy iniquities with works of mercy to the poor: perhaps he will forgive thy offences. |
| 28 Estando ainda estas palavras na boca do rei, caiu do céu uma voz; Eis o que se te anuncia, ó rei Nabucodonosor: A tua realeza ser-te-á tirada, | 28 All these things came upon king Nabuchodonosor. |
| 29 expulsar-te-ão do meio dos homens, e a tua habitação será com os animais dos campos; comerás erva como os bois, e sete tempos passarão por cima de ti, até que reconheças que o Altíssimo domina sobre a realeza dos homens e a dá a quem lhe apraz. | 29 At the end of twelve months he was walking in the palace of Babylon. |
| 30 Na mesma hora se cumpriu esta palavra na pessoa de Nabucodonosor: foi expulso do meio dos homens, comeu erva como os bois, e o seu corpo foi molhado com o orvalho do céu, de sorte que lhe cresceram os cabelos como as (plumas das) águias, e se tornaram as suas unhas como as das aves. | 30 And the king answered, and said: Is not this the great Babylon, which I have built to be the seat of the kingdom, by the strength of my power, and in the glory of my excellence? |
| 31 Mas depois que se passou o tempo, eu, Nabucodonosor, levantei os meus olhos ao céu, e voltou a mim a razão; (então) bem-disse o Altíssimo, louvei e glorifiquei o que vive eternamente, cujo império é um império eterno, cujo reino se estende de geração em geração. | 31 And while the word was yet in the king's mouth, a voice came down from heaven: To thee, O king Nabuchodonosor, it is said: Thy kingdom shall pass from thee, |
| 32 Todos os habitantes da terra são diante dele como um nada; ele faz tudo o que quer, tanto dos exércitos do céu, como dos habitantes da terra; não há quem resista à sua mão e lhe diga: Por que fizeste assim? | 32 And they shall cast thee out from among men, and thy dwelling shall be with cattle and wild beasts: thou shalt eat grass like an ox, and seven times shall pass over thee, till thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will. |
| 33 Ao mesmo tempo voltou a mim a razão, recobrei o esplendor e toda a glória do meu reino; os meus conselheiros e os grandes da minha corte vieram buscar-me e eu fui restabelecido no meu reino, e foi acrescentada a minha grandeza. | 33 The same hour the word was fulfilled upon Nabuchodonosor, and he was driven away from among men, and did eat grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven: till his hairs grew like the feathers of eagles, and his nails like birds' claws. |
| 34 Agora, pois, eu Nabucodonosor, louvo, exalto e glorifico o rei do céu, porque todas as suas obras são verdadeiras, e os seus caminhos cheios de justiça, e ele pode humilhar os que andam na soberba. | 34 Now at the end of the days, I Nabuchodonosor lifted up my eyes to heaven, and my sense was restored to me: and I blessed the most High, and I praised and glorified him that liveth for ever: for his power is an everlasting power, and his kingdom is to all generations. |
| 35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing before him: for he doth according to his will, I as well with the powers of heaven, as among the inhabitants of the earth: and there is none that can resist his hand, and say to him: Why hast thou done it? |
| 36 At the same time my sense returned to me, and I came to the honour and glory of my kingdom: and my shape returned to me: and my nobles, and my magistrates sought for me, and I was restored to my kingdom: and greater majesty was added to me. |
| 37 Therefore I Nabuchodonosor do now praise, and magnify, and glorify the King of heaven: because all his works are true, and his ways judgments, and them that walk in pride he is able to abase. |
