| 1 Por causa da pobreza muitos delinquiram; aquele que procura enriquecer-se afasta os olhos. Como se finca um pau no meio da juntura de duas pedras, assim também se introduzirá o pecado entre a venda e a compra. | 1 Many have sinned for a small matter; and he that seeketh for abundance will turn his eyes away. |
| 2 As a nail sticketh fast between the joinings of the stones; so doth sin stick close between buying and selling. |
| 3 O delito será destruído com o delinquente. | 3 Unless a man hold himself diligently in the fear of the Lord, his house shall soon be overthrown. |
| 4 Se te não mantiveres firmemente no temor do Senhor, depressa a tua casa será arruinada. | 4 As when one sifteth with a sieve, the refuse remaineth; so the filth of man in his talk. |
| 5 Como quando se abana o crivo apenas ficam as alimpas, assim a perplexidade do homem fica no seu pensamento. | 5 The furnace proveth the potter's vessels; so the trial of man is in his reasoning. |
| 6 O forno prova os vasos do oleiro, e a prova dá tribulação, os homens justos. Como o cuidado que se tem da árvore se dá a conhecer no fruto, assim a palavra manifesta o que vai no coração do homem. | 6 The fruit declareth if the tree have been dressed; so is the utterance of a conceit in the heart of man. |
| 7 Praise no man before thou hearest him speak; for this is the trial of men. |
| 8 Não louves um homem antes de ele falar, porque esta é a prova dos homens. | 8 If thou followest righteousness, thou shalt obtain her, and put her on, as a glorious long robe. |
| 9 Se fores atrás da justiça, alcançá-la-ás, dela te revestirás como duma vestidura talar de glória; com ela habitarás, ela te protegerá para sempre, e no dia do juízo acharás nela apoio. | 9 The birds will resort unto their like; so will truth return unto them that practise in her. |
| 10 As aves chegam-se para os seus semelhantes; assim a verdade volta para aqueles que a praticam. | 10 As the lion lieth in wait for the prey; so sin for them that work iniquity. |
| 11 O leão está sempre à espreita da presa; assim os pecados armam laços aos que praticam a iniquidade. | 11 The discourse of a godly man is always with wisdom; but a fool changeth as the moon. |
| 12 O homem santo persevera na sabedoria como o Sol; o insensato, porém, muda como a lua. | 12 If thou be among the indiscreet, observe the time; but be continually among men of understanding. |
| 13 No meio dos insensatos guarda a palavra para outro tempo; (evita-os e) permanece, antes, de continuo entre os que pensam (bem). | 13 The discourse of fools is irksome, and their sport is the wantonness of sin. |
| 14 A conversação dos pecadores é odiosa, e o seu riso é nas delicias do pecado. | 14 The talk of him that sweareth much maketh the hair stand upright; and their brawls make one stop his ears. |
| 15 O discurso do que muito jura fará arripiar os cabelos da cabeça, e a sua irreverência fará tapar os ouvidos. | 15 The strife of the proud is bloodshedding, and their revilings are grievous to the ear. |
| 16 Na bulha dos soberbos há efusão de sangue; é penoso ouvir as suas maldições. | 16 Whoso discovereth secrets loseth his credit; and shall never find friend to his mind. |
| 17 Aquele que descobre os segredos do amigo, perde o crédito e não encontrará mais um amigo a seu gosto. | 17 Love thy friend, and be faithful unto him: but if thou betrayest his secrets, follow no more after him. |
| 18 Ama o teu próximo e sê leal na amizade com ele. | 18 For as a man hath destroyed his enemy; so hast thou lost the love of thy neighbor. |
| 19 Se descobrires os seus segredos, não o voltarás a ganhar. | 19 As one that letteth a bird go out of his hand, so hast thou let thy neighbour go, and shalt not get him again |
| 20 Como um homem que mata o seu amigo, assim é o que destrói a amizade do seu próximo. | 20 Follow after him no more, for he is too far off; he is as a roe escaped out of the snare. |
| 21 Como aquele que deixa ir da sua mão o pássaro. assim tu deixaste ir o teu próximo, e não o conciliarás mais. | 21 As for a wound, it may be bound up; and after reviling there may be reconcilement: but he that betrayeth secrets is without hope. |
| 22 Não o sigas, porque já está muito distante; fugiu do laço como uma gazela. Porque foi ferida a sua alma, | 22 He that winketh with the eyes worketh evil: and he that knoweth him will depart from him. |
| 23 não poderás mais atraí-lo a ti. Depois duma injúria há reconciliação; | 23 When thou art present, he will speak sweetly, and will admire thy words: but at the last he will writhe his mouth, and slander thy sayings. |
| 24 mas o revelar os segredos do amigo tira toda a esperança a uma alma infeliz. | 24 I have hated many things, but nothing like him; for the Lord will hate him. |
| 25 O que pisca os olhos forja maus desígnios, e ninguém o pode afastar de si. | 25 Whoso casteth a stone on high casteth it on his own head; and a deceitful stroke shall make wounds. |
| 26 Na tua presença falará com doçura, admirará o que tu disseres, mas depois mudará de linguagem e armará laços às tuas palavras. | 26 Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that setteth a trap shall be taken therein. |
| 27 Muitas coisas aborreço, mas nenhuma como um tal homem; o Senhor o aborrece também. | 27 He that worketh mischief, it shall fall upon him, and he shall not know whence it cometh. |
| 28 Quando alguém lança uma pedra ao alto, ela cairá sobre a sua cabeça; assim a ferida traiçoeira abrirá feridas no traidor. | 28 Mockery and reproach are from the proud; but vengeance, as a lion, shall lie in wait for them. |
| 29 O que abre a cova, cairá nela; o que põe uma pedra no caminho para tropeço do próximo, tropeçará nela; o que arma um laço a outrem, nele perecerá. | 29 They that rejoice at the fall of the righteous shall be taken in the snare; and anguish shall consume them before they die. |
| 30 O desígnio perverso recairá sobre o que o forja, que não saberá donde lhe vem o mal. | 30 Malice and wrath, even these are abominations; and the sinful man shall have them both. |
| 31 O escárnio e o ultraje são próprios dos soberbos, e a vingança, como um leão, armar-lhe-á ciladas. | |
