| 1 O que tocar o pez, ficará manchado dele; o que trata com o soberbo, revestir-se-á de soberba. | 1 He that toucheth pitch, shall be defiled with it: and he that hath fellowship with the proud, shall put on pride. |
| 2 Impõe-se uma pesada carga o que trata com outro mais poderoso que ele; (por isso) não te associes com o que é mais rico do que tu. | 2 He shall take a burden upon him that hath fellowship with one more honourable than himself. And have no fellowship with one that is richer than thyself. |
| 3 Como se associará uma panela (de barro) com um caldeirão? Quando estes vasos derem um no outro, ela se quebrará. | 3 What agreement shall the earthen pot have with the kettle? for if they knock one against the other, it shall be broken. |
| 4 O rico faz uma injustiça, e (ainda por cima) solta clamores; o pobre, porém, maltratado, guarda silêncio. | 4 The rich man hath done wrong, and yet he will fume: but the poor is wronged and must hold his peace. |
| 5 Enquanto lhe fores útil, utilizará os teus serviços; quando não valeres nada, abandonar-te-á. | 5 If thou give, he will make use of thee: and if thou have nothing, he will forsake thee. |
| 6 Se tens, fará convivência contigo, e te esgotará sem nenhuma pena ter de ti. | 6 If thou have any thing, he will live with thee, and will make thee bare, and he will not be sorry for thee. |
| 7 Se lhe fores necessário, ele te enganará, e, sorrindo-se, te dará boas esperanças; falando-te com boas palavras, dir-te-á: De que necessitas tu ? | 7 If he have need of thee he will deceive thee, and smiling upon thee will put thee in hope; he will speak thee fair, and will say: What wantest thou? |
| 8 Confundir-te-á com os seus banquetes, até que te esgote em duas ou três vezes (que o convides), e, por último, zombará de ti; depois, vendo-te, abandonar-te-á e abanará a cabeça escarnecendo de ti. | 8 And he will shame thee by his meats, till he have drawn thee dry twice or thrice, and at last he will laugh at thee: and afterward when he seeth thee, he will forsake thee, and shake his head at thee. |
| 9 Humilha-te diante de Deus, e espera (que) a sua mão (obre). | 9 Humble thyself to God, and wait for his hands. |
| 10 Tem cuidado, não te deixes seduzir para que não caias numa loucura que te humilhe. | 10 Beware that thou be not deceived Into folly, and be humbled. |
| 11 Não te humilhes na tua sabedoria, não suceda que este abaixamento te arraste para a loucura. | 11 Be not lowly in thy wisdom, lest being humbled thou be deceived into folly. |
| 12 Se fores chamado por algum grande, retira-te, porque isso o excitará mais a chamar-te. | 12 If thou be invited by one that is mightier, withdraw thyself: for so he will invite thee the more. |
| 13 Não lhe sejas importuno, para que ele se não desgoste de ti; e não te afastes demasiado, para que te não esqueça. | 13 Be not troublesome to him, lest thou be put back: and keep not far from him, lest thou be forgotten. |
| 14 Não pretendas falar com ele, como se fosses seu igual, nem te fies nas suas muitas palavras, porque ele te experimentará, fazendo-te falar muito, e, sorrindo, te interrogará sobre os teus segredos, | 14 Affect not to speak with him as an equal: and believe not his many words: for by much talk he will sift thee, and smiling will examine thee concerning thy secrets. |
| 15 O seu coração desapiedado conservará todas as tuas palavras, e não te poupará, nem aos maus tratos, nem às prisões. | 15 His cruel mind will lay up thy words: and he will not spare to do thee hurt, and to cast thee into prison. |
| 16 Tem cuidado contigo, e presta bem atenção aos teus ouvidos. pois andas em risco de te perder. | 16 Take heed to thyself, and attend diligently to what thou hearest: for thou walkest in danger of thy ruin. |
| 17 Mas, ouvindo essas coisas (as suas palavras), toma-as por um sonho, e vigiarás. | 17 When thou hearest those things, see as it were in sleep, and thou shalt awake. |
| 18 Ama a Deus durante toda a tua vida, e invoca-o para tua salvação. | 18 Love God all thy life, and call upon him for thy salvation. |
| 19 Todo o ser vivo ama o seu semelhante; igualmente todo o homem ama o seu próximo. | 19 Every beast loveth its like: so also every man him that is nearest to himself. |
| 20 Toda a carne se une à que se lhe assemelha, e todo o homem se une com o seu semelhante. | 20 All flesh shall consort with the like to itself, and every man shall associate himself to his like. |
| 21 Quando o lobo tiver amizade com o cordeiro, então a terá o pecador com o justo. | 21 If the wolf shall at any time have fellowship with the lamb, so the sinner with the just. |
| 22 Que relações pode ter um homem santo com um cão? Ou que sociedade pode ter um homem rico com um pobre? | 22 What fellowship hath a holy man with a dog, or what part hath the rich with the poor? |
| 23 O asno montês é a presa do leão no deserto; assim também os pobres são a presa dos ricos. | 23 The wild ass is the lion's prey in the desert: so also the poor are devoured by the rich. |
| 24 E, assim como a humildade é a abominação do soberbo, assim também o pobre é a execração do rico. | 24 And as humility is an abomination to the proud: so also the rich man abhorreth the poor. |
| 25 O rico, se for abalado, é sustido pelos seus amigos; mas o pobre, quando cai, será repelido até pelos seus amigos. | 25 When a rich man is shaken, he is kept up by his friends: but when a poor man is fallen down, he is thrust away even by his acquaintance. |
| 26 Se o rico se engana, tem muitos defensores; se fala com arrogância, justificam-no. Se o pobre se engana, ainda em cima é repreendido; se fala avisadamente, não fazem caso. | 26 When a rich man hath been deceived, he hath many helpers: he hath spoken proud things, and they have justified him. |
| 27 The poor man was deceived, and he is rebuked also: he hath spoken wisely, and could have no place. |
| 28 Se fala o rico, todos se calam, e exaltam até às nuvens as suas palavras. | 28 The rich man spoke, and all held their peace, and what he said they extol even to the clouds. |
| 29 Se fala o pobre, dizem: Quem é este? Se puser um pé em falso, acabá-lo-ão de derrubar. | 29 The poor man spoke, and they say: Who is this? and if he stumble, they will overthrow him. |
| 30 As riquezas são boas para o que não tem pecado na sua consciência; a pobreza é péssima na boca do ímpio. | 30 Riches are good to him that hath no sin in his conscience: and poverty is very wicked in the mouth of the ungodly. |
| 31 O coração do homem muda-lhe o rosto, quer para bem, quer para mal. | 31 The heart of a man changeth his countenance, either for good, or for evil. |
| 32 O sinal dum bom coração, que é um rosto satisfeito, encontra-se dificilmente e com trabalho. | 32 The token of a good heart, and a good countenance thou shalt hardly find, and with labour. |
