| 2 e resolveram exterminar os da linhagem de Jacob, que viviam entre elas; (consequentemente) começaram a matar alguns do povo e a perseguir (outros). | 2 So they decided to destroy the descendants of Jacob who were among them, and they began to massacre and persecute the people. |
| 3 Entretanto Judas fazia guerra aos filhos de Esaú na Idumeia, em Acrabatane, porque perseguiam Israel; infligiu-lhes uma grande derrota, esmagou-os e levou os seus despojos. | 3 Then Judas attacked the sons of Esau at Akrabattene in Idumea, because they were blockading Israel; he defeated them heavily, overcame and despoiled them. |
| 4 Lembrou-se também da malícia dos filhos de Bean, que serviam como de laço e de tropeço para apanhar o povo, armando-lhe emboscadas no caminho. | 4 He also remembered the malice of the sons of Baean, who had become a snare and a stumbling block to the people by ambushing them along the roads. |
| 5 Foram repelidos para as suas torres, a que pôs cerco; votou-os ao extermínio, lançando fogo às suas torres, que queimou com todos os que estavam nelas. | 5 He forced them to take refuge in towers, which he besieged; he vowed their annihilation and burned down the towers along with all the persons in them. |
| 6 De lá passou para entre os filhos de Amon, onde encontrou fortes tropas, e um povo numeroso, de que Timóteo era o chefe. | 6 Then he crossed over to the Ammonites, where he found a strong army and a large body of people with Timothy as their leader. |
| 7 Teve com eles diversos recontros, derrotou-os e despedaçou-os. | 7 He fought many battles with them, routed them, and struck them down. |
| 8 Tomou a cidade de Gazer e as povoações dependentes dela, e voltou para a Judeia. | 8 After seizing Jazer and its villages, he returned to Judea. |
| 9 Entretanto os gentios, que viviam em Galaad, uniram-se contra os Israelitas, que estavam no seu país, para os exterminar, mas estes fugiram para a fortaleza de Dateman | 9 The Gentiles in Gilead assembled to attack and destroy the Israelites who were in their territory; these then fled to the stronghold of Dathema. |
| 10 e mandaram cartas a Judas e aos seus, irmãos, em que lhes diziam : Juntaram-se contra nós as nações circunvizinhas, para nos exterminarem: | 10 They sent a letter to Judas and his brothers saying: "The Gentiles around us have combined against us to destroy us, |
| 11 preparam-se para vir tomar a fortaleza, onde nos refugiámos; Timóteo comanda o seu exército. | 11 and they are preparing to come and seize this stronghold to which we have fled. Timothy is the leader of their army. |
| 12 Vem, pois, agora, livrar-nos das suas mãos, porque muitos dos nossos já pereceram. | 12 Come at once and rescue us from them, for many of us have fallen. |
| 13 Todos os nossos irmãos, que habitavam na região de Tob, foram mortos; levaram cativas as suas mulheres e os seus filhos, tomaram os seus despojos e mataram lá perto de mil homens. | 13 All our kinsmen who were among the Tobiads have been killed; the Gentiles have carried away their wives and children and their goods, and they have slain there about a thousand men." |
| 14 Quando ainda se estavam lendo estas cartas, eis que chegaram outros mensageiros da Galileia, com as vestes rasgadas, trazendo novas semelhantes, | 14 While they were reading this letter, suddenly other messengers, in torn clothes, arrived from Galilee to deliver a similar message: |
| 15 pois diziam que os de Ptolemaida, de Tiro, de Sidónia e de toda a Galileia dos estrangeiros se tinham coligado com o fim de os perder. | 15 that the inhabitants of Ptolemais, Tyre, and Sidon, and the whole of Gentile Galilee had joined forces to destroy them. |
| 16 Logo que Judas e o povo ouviram estas novas, convocaram uma grande assembleia, para- deliberarem o que se devia fazer em favor dos seus irmãos, que se achavam na angústia e que eram atacados por aqueles homens. | 16 When Judas and the people heard this, a great assembly convened to consider what they should do for their unfortunate kinsmen who were being attacked by enemies. |
| 17 Disse Judas a seu irmão Simão: Escolhe homens e vai livrar os teus irmãos que estão na Galileia; eu e o meu irmão Jónatas iremos a Galaad. | 17 Judas said to his brother Simon: "Choose men for yourself, and go, rescue your kinsmen in Galilee; I and my brother Jonathan will go to Gilead." |
| 18 Deixou José, filho de Zacarias, e Azarias, à frente do povo, para guardarem a Judeia com o resto das tropas, | 18 In Judea he left Joseph, son of Zechariah, and Azariah, leader of the people, with the rest of the army to guard it. |
| 19 dando-lhes esta ordem; Governai este povo, mas não deis batalha contra os gentios, enquanto não regressarmos. | 19 "Take charge of these people," he commanded them, "but do not fight against the Gentiles until we return." |
| 20 Foram dados a Simão três mil homens, para ir à Galileia, e a Judas oito mil, para ir a Galaad. | 20 Three thousand men were allotted to Simon, to go into Galilee, and eight thousand men to Judas, for Gilead. |
| 21 Simão marchou para a Galileia e deu muitas vezes batalha às nações, que foram derrotadas na sua presença; perseguiu-as até à porta | 21 Simon went into Galilee and fought many battles with the Gentiles. They were crushed before him, |
| 22 de Ptolemaida; morreram daqueles gentios perto de três mil homens, de cujos despojos se apoderou. | 22 and he pursued them to the very gate of Ptolemais. About three thousand men of the Gentiles fell, and he gathered their spoils. |
| 23 Depois tomou consigo os (Judeus) que estavam na Galileia e em Arbates, com suas mulheres, seus filhos e tudo quanto tinham, e conduziu-os para a Judeia com grande regozijo. | 23 He took with him the Jews who were in Galilee and in Arbatta, with their wives and children and all that they had, and brought them to Judea with great rejoicing. |
| 24 Por seu lado, Judas Macabeu e seu irmão Jónatas passaram o Jordão e marcharam durante três dias pelo deserto. | 24 Judas Maccabeus and his brother Jonathan crossed the Jordan and marched for three days through the desert. |
| 25 Os Nabateus saíram-lhes ao encontro, receberam-nos pacificamente e contaram-lhes tudo o que tinha acontecido a seus irmãos em Galaad, | 25 There they met some Nabateans, who received them peacefully and told them all that had happened to the Jews in Gilead: |
| 26 como muitos deles tinham sido encerrados em Bosra e em Bosor, em Alimas, em Casfor, em Maked e em Carnaim, as quais todas eram cidades fortificadas e grandes. | 26 "Many of them have been imprisoned in Bozrah, in Bosor near Alema, in Chaspho, Maked, and Carnaim"--all of these are large, fortified cities-- |
| 27 (Acrescentaram) que da mesma sorte se achavam encerrados outros nas restantes cidades de Galaad, e (que os seus inimigos) tinham resolvido fazer marchar no dia seguinte o seu exército contra essas fortalezas, com o fim de os apanhar e os exterminar a todos num só dia. | 27 "and some have been imprisoned in other cities of Gilead. Tomorrow their enemies plan to attack the strongholds and to seize and destroy all these people in one day." |
| 28 Então Judas com o seu exército, mudando de direcção, marchou imediatamente pelo caminho do deserto de Bosor e tomou a cidade; mandou passar ao fio da espada todos os varões, tomou todos os despojos e pôs fogo a cidade. | 28 Thereupon Judas suddenly changed direction with his army, marched across the desert to Bozrah, and captured the city. He slaughtered all the male population, took all their possessions, and set fire to the city. |
| 29 Saiu de lá de noite e marchou até à fortaleza. | 29 He led his army from that place by night, and they marched toward the stronghold of Dathema. |
| 30 Ao romper do dia, tendo levantado os olhos, viram uma multidão inumerável de gente, que transportava escadas e máquinas para tomar a fortaleza, começando já o assalto. | 30 When morning came, they looked ahead and saw a countless multitude of people, with ladders and devices for capturing the stronghold, and beginning to attack the people within. |
| 31 Judas ao ver que o ataque estava já começado, ao ouvir o clamor dos combatentes que, da cidade subia até ao céu, com o som das trombetas, | 31 When Judas perceived that the struggle had begun and that the noise of the battle was resounding to heaven with trumpet blasts and loud shouting, |
| 32 disse ao seu exército: Pelejai hoje por vossos irmãos. | 32 he said to the men of his army, "Fight for our kinsmen today." |
| 33 Marchou em três corpos sobre a rectaguarda do inimigo. Ao mesmo tempo tocaram as trombetas e levantaram gritos a Deus, dirigindo-lhe as suas orações. | 33 He came up behind them with three columns blowing their trumpets and shouting in prayer. |
| 34 As tropas de Timóteo, ao conhecerem que aquele era Macabeu, fugiram diante dele; Judas fez neles grande estrago, caindo naquele dia cerca de oito mil homens. | 34 When the army of Timothy realized that it was Maccabeus, they fell back before him, and he inflicted on them a crushing defeat. About eight thousand of their men fell that day. |
| 35 Dali passou Judas a Masfa, assaltou-a, tomou-a, matou todos os varões que achou nela, levou os seus despojos e pôs fogo à cidade. | 35 Then he turned toward Alema and attacked and captured it; he killed all the male population, plundered the place, and burned it down. |
| 36 Continuou depois a sua expedição, tomando Casbon, Maked, Bosor e outras cidades de Galaad. | 36 From there he moved on and took Chaspho, Maked, Bosor, and the other cities of Gilead. |
| 37 Depois disto, Timóteo juntou outro exército, e acampou defronte de Bafon, da banda de além da torrente. | 37 After these events Timothy assembled another army and camped opposite Raphon, on the other side of the stream. |
| 38 Judas mandou reconhecer este exército. Tendo voltado os mensageiros, disseram-lhe: Todas as nações que nos cercam juntaram-se com Timóteo, (formando) um exército muito numeroso; | 38 Judas sent men to spy on the camp, and they reported to him: "All the Gentiles around us have rallied to him, making a very large force; |
| 39 trouxeram em seu auxílio mercenários árabes e acamparam da banda de além da torrente, apercebidos para vir atacar-te. Judas marchou ao seu encontro. | 39 they have also hired Arabs to help them, and have camped beyond the stream, ready to attack you." So Judas went forward to attack them. |
| 40 Então Timóteo disse aos chefes do seu exército; Quando Judas tiver chegado com o seu exército junto da torrente, se ele a atravessar primeiro, vindo atacar-nos, não lhe poderemos resistir, porque terá vantagem sobre nós; | 40 As Judas and his army were approaching the running stream, Timothy said to the officers of his army: "If he crosses over to us first, we shall not be able to resist him; he will certainly defeat us. |
| 41 mas, se ele temer passar, e acampar da outra banda do rio, passemos nós a eles e teremos vantagem sobre ele. | 41 But if he is afraid and camps on the other side of the river, we will cross over to him and defeat him." |
| 42 Nisto Judas chegou à torrente, pôs ao longo da torrente os escribas do povo e deu-lhes esta ordem; Não deixeis ficar aqui homem algum; venham todos ao combate. | 42 But when Judas reached the running stream, he stationed the officers of the people beside the stream and gave them this order: "Do not allow any man to pitch a tent; all must go into battle." |
| 43 E foi ele o primeiro que passou a eles, e todo o povo após ele. Derrotou todos os gentios, os quais arrojaram as suas armas e fugiram para um templo, que havia em Carnaim. | 43 He was the first to cross to the attack, with all the people behind him, and the Gentiles were crushed before them; they threw away their arms and fled to the temple enclosure at Carnaim. |
| 44 Os Judeus apoderam-se da cidade e queimaram o templo com todos os que estavam dentro. Carnaim foi assolada, sem poder resistir ao ímpeto de Judas. | 44 The Jews captured that city and burnt the enclosure with all who were in it. So Carnaim was subdued, and Judas met with no more resistance. |
| 45 Então Judas congregou todos os Israelitas, que havia em Galaad, desde o mais pequeno ao maior, com suas mulheres, filhos e bens imensa multidão! para os conduzir à terra de Judá. | 45 Then he assembled all the Israelites, great and small, who were in Gilead, with their wives and children and their goods, a great crowd of people, to go into the land of Judah. |
| 46 Chegaram a Efron, cidade grande, situada no caminho de retorno, e muito forte; não se podia declinar dela nem para a direita, nem para a esquerda, pois o caminho passava pelo seu meio. | 46 When they reached Ephron, a large and strongly fortified city along the way, they found it impossible to encircle it on either the right or the left; they would have to march right through it. |
| 47 Os que estavam na cidade fecharam-se dentro e obstruíram as portas com pedras. Judas enviou-lhes mensageiros com palavras de paz; | 47 But the men in the city shut them out and blocked up the gates with stones. |
| 48 Sede servidos de nos deixar passar pelo vosso país, à fim de irmos para a nossa terra, e ninguém vos fará mal algum. Apenas passaremos. Eles, porém, não quiseram abrir-lhes. | 48 Then Judas sent them this peaceful message: "We wish to cross your territory in order to reach our own; no one will harm you; we will only march through." But they would not open to him. |
| 49 Então Judas mandou apregoar pelo acampamento que cada um fosse atacar a cidade pelo lugar em que estivesse. | 49 So Judas ordered a proclamation to be made in the camp that everyone make an attack from the place where he was. |
| 50 Os homens de guerra, portanto, prepararam-se. Judas deu o assalto àquela cidade durante todo o dia e toda a noite, e a cidade caiu nas suas mãos. | 50 When the men of the army took up their positions, he assaulted the city all that day and night, and it was delivered to him. |
| 51 Passaram ao fio da espada todos os varões; (Judas) destruiu a cidade até aos fundamentos, levou os seus despojos e atravessou a cidade por cima de cadáveres. | 51 He slaughtered every male, razed and plundered the city, and passed through it over the slain. |
| 52 Depois passaram o Jordão chegando à grande planície que está defronte de Betsan. | 52 Then they crossed the Jordan to the great plain in front of Beth-shan; |
| 53 Judas ia na retaguarda reunindo os atrasados e animando o povo por todo o caminho, até que chegassem ao país de Judá. | 53 and Judas kept rounding up the stragglers and encouraging the people the whole way, until he reached the land of Judah. |
| 54 Subiram ao monte Sião com alegria e regozijo e ofereceram holocaustos em acção de graças, por terem voltado em paz, sem que nenhum deles tivesse perecido. | 54 They ascended Mount Zion in joy and gladness and offered holocausts, because not one of them had fallen; they had returned in safety. |
| 55 Durante o tempo em que Judas e Jónatas estavam no país de Galaad, e Simão, irmão deles, na Galileia, diante de Ptolemaida, | 55 During the time that Judas and Jonathan were in the land of Gilead, and Simon his brother was in Galilee opposite Ptolemais, |
| 56 José, filho de Zacarias, e Azarias chefes do exército, souberam os bons sucessos que eles tinham tido, as batalhas que se tinham dado, | 56 Joseph, son of Zechariah, and Azariah, the leaders of the army, heard about the brave deeds and the fighting that they were doing. |
| 57 e disseram um para o outro: Façamos também célebre o nosso nome, indo pelejar contra as nações que estão à roda de nós. | 57 They said, "Let us also make a name for ourselves by going out and fighting against the Gentiles around us." |
| 58 Deram ordens aos que compunham o seu exército e marcharam contra Jamnia. | 58 They gave orders to the men of their army who were with them, and marched toward Jamnia. |
| 59 Górgias saiu da cidade, com os seus soldados, a encontrar-se com eles, oferecendo-lhes batalha. | 59 But Gorgias and his men came out of the city to meet them in battle. |
| 60 José e Azarias foram derrotados e postos em fuga até à fronteira da Judeia, perecendo naquele dia, do povo de Israel, cerca de dois mil homens. Foi grande a derrota que o povo sofreu, | 60 Joseph and Azariah were beaten, and were pursued to the frontiers of Judea, and about two thousand Israelites fell that day. |
| 61 por eles não terem seguido as ordens de Judas e de seus irmãos. Imaginando que fariam grandes façanhas. | 61 It was a bad defeat for the people, because they had not obeyed Judas and his brothers, thinking that they would do brave deeds. |
| 62 Mas eles não pertenciam à raça daqueles homens a quem era dado salvar Israel. | 62 But they did not belong to the family of those men to whom it was granted to achieve Israel's salvation. |
| 63 O heróico Judas e seus irmãos ficaram com grande glória perante todo o Israel e perante todas as nações onde se ouvia o seu nome. | 63 The valiant Judas and his brothers were greatly renowned in all Israel and among all the Gentiles, wherever their name was heard; |
| 64 O povo saía-lhes ao encontro em aclamações de júbilo. | 64 and men gathered about them and praised them. |
| 65 Passado algum tempo, marchou Judas com seus irmãos para sujeitar os filhos de Esaú, no país que fica para o meio-dia, e tomou por força Hebron e as cidades que dependiam dela, destruindo as suas fortificações e queimando as torres em sua volta | 65 Then Judas and his brothers went out and attacked the sons of Esau in the country toward the south; he took Hebron and its villages, and he destroyed its strongholds and burned the towers around it. |
| 66 Depois disto levantou o acampamento para ir ao país dos Filisteus e atravessou Maresa. | 66 He then set out for the land of the Philistines and passed through Marisa. |
| 67 Naquele dia caíram mortos alguns sacerdotes no combate, por quererem dar mostras do seu valor, saindo à peleja imprudentemente. | 67 At that time some priests fell in battle who had gone out rashly to fight in their desire to distinguish themselves. |
| 68 Judas deu volta para Azot, no país dos Filisteus, demoliu os seus altares, queimou as estátuas dos seus deuses, saqueou as cidades e voltou para a terra de Judá. | 68 Judas then turned toward Azotus in the land of the Philistines. He destroyed their altars and burned the statues of their gods; and after plundering their cities he returned to the land of Judah. |
