| 1 Simão ouviu dizer que Trifão tinha levantado um grande exército, para vir á terra de Judá e assolá-la. | 1 Now Simon heard that Tryphon was gathering together a very great army, to invade the land of Juda, and to destroy it. |
| 2 Vendo que o povo estava todo amedrontado e espavorido, subiu a Jerusalém, mandou juntar o povo, | 2 And seeing that the people was in dread, and in fear, he went up to Jerusalem, and assembled the people: |
| 3 e, para o animar, disse: Sabeis quanto temos pelejado, eu e meus irmãos e a casa de meu pai, pelas nossas leis e pelo santuário, e em que angústias nos temos visto; | 3 And exhorted them, saying: You know what great battles I and my brethren, and the house of my father, have fought for the laws, and the sanctuary, and the distresses that we have seen: |
| 4 por esta causa morreram todos os meus irmãos, por (quererem salvar) Israel, e fiquei eu só. | 4 By reason whereof all my brethren have lost their lives for Israel's sake, and I am left alone. |
| 5 Mas não permita Deus agora que queira eu poupar a minha vida, enquanto durarem as nossas tribulações, porque não sou melhor que meus irmãos. | 5 And now far be it from me to spare my life in any time of trouble: for I am not better than my brethren. |
| 6 Vingarei, pois, a minha nação, o santuário, os nossos filhos e as nossas mulheres, porque todas as nações se juntaram para nos oprimirem, pelo ódio que nos têm. | 6 I will avenge then my nation and the sanctuary, and our children, and wives: for all the heathens are gathered together to destroy us out of mere malice. |
| 7 O espírito do povo, assim que ouviu estas palavras, ficou todo inflamado. | 7 And the spirit of the people was enkindled as soon as they heard these words. |
| 8 (Imediatamente) todos responderam em alta voz, dizendo: Tu és o nosso chefe em lugar de Judas e de Jónatas, teu Irmão; | 8 And they answered with a loud voice, saying: Thou art our leader in the place of Judas, and Jonathan thy brother. |
| 9 dirige as nossas batalhas, e nós faremos tudo o que nos disseres. | 9 Fight thou our battles, and we will do whatsoever thou shalt say to us. |
| 10 Então Simão, reunindo todos os homens de guerra, fez acabar com presteza todos os muros de Jerusalém e fortificou a sua cerca. | 10 So gathering together all the men of war, he made haste to finish all the walls of Jerusalem, and he fortified it round about. |
| 11 Ao mesmo tempo, enviou Jónatas, filho de Absalão, com um forte exército, a Jope. Jónatas, tendo deitado fora os que estavam dentro dela, deixou-se lá ficar (com suas tropas). | 11 And he sent Jonathan the son of Absalom, and with him a new army into Joppe, and he cast out them that were in it, and himself remained there. |
| 12 Trifão, entretanto, partiu de Ptolemaida, com um grande exército, para invadir a terra de Judá, levando consigo Jónatas, prisioneiro. | 12 And Tryphon removed from Ptolemais with a great army, to invade the land of Juda, and Jonathan was with him in custody. |
| 13 Simão acampou perto de Adida, defronte da planície. | 13 But Simon pitched in Addus, over against the plain. |
| 14 Trifão, logo que soube que Simão tinha tomado o comando, em lugar de seu irmão Jónatas, e que se dispunha a dar-lhe batalha, mandou-lhe embaixadores, | 14 And when Tryphon understood that Simon was risen up in the place of his brother Jonathan, and that he meant to join battle with him, he sent messengers to him, |
| 15 a dizer: Pelo dinheiro que teu irmão Jónatas deve à fazenda real, por causa dos negócios que estavam ao seu cuidado, é que o retemos prisioneiro. | 15 Saying: We have detained thy brother Jonathan for the money that he owed in the king's account, by reason of the affairs which he had the management of. |
| 16 Envia-me, portanto, agora cem talentos de prata e dois de seus filhos como reféns, para que ele, sendo posto em liberdade, não fuja do nosso partido, e nós to remeteremos. | 16 But now send a hundred talents of silver, and his two sons for hostages, that when he is set at liberty he may not revolt from us, and we will release him. |
| 17 Simão, ainda que conheceu que Trifão lhe falava assim para o enganar, mandou todavia que se lhe levasse o dinheiro com os filhos, para não atrair contra si o ódio do povo de Israel, que poderia dizer: | 17 Now Simon knew that he spoke deceitfully to him, nevertheless he ordered the money, and the children to be sent: lest he should bring upon himself a great hatred of the people of Israel, who might have said: |
| 18 Porque não lhe enviou dinheiro e os filhos, por isso é que Jónatas pereceu. | 18 Because he sent not the money, and the children, therefore is he lost. |
| 19 Mandou-lhe, pois, os filhos e os cem talentos, mas Trifão faltou à palavra e não remeteu Jónatas. | 19 So he sent the children, and the hundred talents: and he lied, and did not let Jonathan go. |
| 20 Depois disto, dirigiu-se Trifão à terra (de Judá) para a calcar e assolar, dando volta pelo caminho que vai a Adora, mas Simão e o seu exército seguiam-no por toda a parte, para onde ele ia. | 20 And after this Tryphon entered within the country, to destroy it: and they went about by the way that leadeth to Ador: and Simon and his army marched to every place whithersoever they went. |
| 21 Então os que estavam na cidadela (de Jerusalém) mandaram por uns mensageiros dizer a Trifão que se apressasse em vir pelo deserto e que lhes enviasse víveres. | 21 And they that were in the castle, sent messengers to Tryphon, that he should make haste to come through the desert, and sent them victuals. |
| 22 Trifão dispôs toda a cavalaria para partir aquela mesma noite, mas tinha caído muita neve, e não pôde lá ir; avançou entretanto para o território de Galaad. | 22 And Tryphon made ready all his horsemen to come that night: but there fell a very great snow, and he came not into the country of Galaad. |
| 23 Estando perto de Bascama, matou ali Jónatas e sepultou-o. | 23 And when he approached to Bascama, he slew Jonathan and his sons there. |
| 24 Depois Trifão voltou para a sua terra. | 24 And Tryphon returned, and went into his own country. |
| 25 Simão mandou buscar os ossos de seu irmão Jónatas e sepultou-os em Modin, que era a cidade de seus pais. | 25 And Simon sent, and took the bones of Jonathan his brother, and buried them in Modin, in the city of his fathers. |
| 26 Todo Israel tomou grande dó pela sua morte e pranteou-o durante muitos dias. | 26 And all Israel bewailed him with great lamentation: and they mourned for him many days. |
| 27 Simão levantou sobre o sepulcro de seu pai e de seus irmãos um alto monumento, que se via de longe, cujas pedras eram polidas por detrás e por diante. | 27 And Simon built over the sepulchre of his father and of his brethren, a building lofty to the sight, of polished stone behind and before: |
| 28 E levantou sete pirâmides, uma em frente da outra, a seu pai, a sua mãe e a seus quatro irmãos. | 28 And he set up seven pyramids one against another for his father and his mother, and his four brethren: |
| 29 Pôs-lhes ornatos e à roda delas colocou grandes colunas; sobre estas colunas, armas, e ao pé das armas, navios esculpidos, que fossem vistos de longe por todos os que navegavam pelo mar. | 29 And round about these he set great pillars: and upon the pillars arms for a perpetual memory: and by the arms ships carved, which might be seen by all that sailed on the sea. |
| 30 Tal é o sepulcro, que levantou em Modin, o qual ainda hoje existe. | 30 This is the sepulchre that he made in Modin even unto this day. |
| 31 Trifão, procedendo dolosamente com o jovem rei Antíoco, deu-lhe a morte. | 31 But Tryphon when he was upon a journey with the young king Antiochus, treacherously slew him. |
| 32 Reinou em lugar dele e pôs sobre a cabeça o diadema da Ásia, causando grandes males em todo o país. | 32 And he reigned in his place, and put on the crown of Asia: and brought great evils upon the land. |
| 33 Simão, entretanto, reparou as praças da Judeia, fortificando-as de altas torres, de grandes muros, de portas e ferrolhos, e abasteceu-as de víveres, | 33 And Simon built up the strong holds of Judea, fortifying them with high towers, and great walls, and gates, and bars: and he stored up victuals in the fortresses. |
| 34 Escolheu Simão alguns homens que enviou ao rei Demétrio, pedindo-lhe que libertasse de impostos a Judeia, porque todo o procedimento de Trifão não tinha sido mais do que uma rapina. | 34 And Simon chose men and sent to king Demetrius, to the end that he should grant an immunity to the land: for all that Tryphon did was to spoil. |
| 35 O rei Demétrio respondeu a este pedido, escrevendo-lhe a carta seguinte: | 35 And king Demetrius in answer to this request, wrote a letter in this manner: |
| 36 O rei Demétrio, a Simão, sumo sacerdote e amigo dos reis, aos anciães e ao povo dos Judeus, saúde. | 36 King Demetrius to Simon the high priest, and friend of kings, and to the ancients, and to the nation of the Jews, greeting. |
| 37 Recebemos a coroa de ouro e a palma, que nos mandastes, e estamos prontos a fazer convosco uma paz sólida e a escrever aos funcionários que vos dispensem dos impostos. | 37 The golden crown, and the palm, which you sent, we have received: and we are ready to make a firm peace with you, and to write to the king's chief officers to release you the things that we have released. |
| 38 Tudo o que temos ordenado em vosso favor, continua válido. As fortalezas que edificastes, sejam vossas. | 38 For all that we have decreed in your favour, shall stand in force. The strong holds that you have built, shall be your own. |
| 39 Também vos perdoamos as faltas e erros em que podeis ter caído até ao dia de hoje, assim como a coroa que devíeis; e, se qualquer outro imposto nos era pago em Jerusalém, não se tome ele mais a pagar. | 39 And as for any oversight or fault committed unto this day, we forgive it, and the crown which you owed: and if any other thing were taxed in Jerusalem, now let it not be taxed. |
| 40 Se entre vós há alguns que sejam capazes de se alistar nas nossas tropas, alistem-se e haja entre nós paz. | 40 And if any of you be fit to be enrolled among ours, let them be enrolled, and let there be peace between us. |
| 41 Com isto, no ano cento e setenta, foi tirado o jugo dos gentios a Israel. | 41 In the year one hundred and seventy the yoke of the Gentiles was taken off from Israel. |
| 42 E o povo de Israel começou a escrever nos documentos e contratos: No primeiro ano de Simão, sumo pontífice, general e chefe dos Judeus. | 42 And the people of Israel began to write in the instruments, and public records, The first year under Simon the high priest, the great captain and prince of the Jews. |
| 43 Naqueles dias Simão acampou junto de Gaza que sitiou com o seu exército. Levantou máquinas, aproximou-as da cidade, atacou uma das torres e apoderou-se dela. | 43 In those days Simon besieged Gaza, and camped round about it, and he made engines, and set them to the city, and he struck one tower, and took it. |
| 44 Os que estavam numa destas máquinas atiraram-se sobre a cidade, o que aí causou grande confusão. | 44 And they that were within the engine leaped into the city: and there was a great uproar in the city. |
| 45 Os habitantes subiram às muralhas com suas mulheres e filhos, rasgadas as suas vestes, e clamaram em altos gritos, pedindo a Simão que lhes desse a sua mão direita. | 45 And they that were in the city went up with their wives and children upon the wall, with their garments rent, and they cried with a loud voice, beseeching Simon to grant them peace. |
| 46 Diziam: Não nos trates segundo a nossa maldade, mas segundo a tua clemência. | 46 And they said: Deal not with us according to our evil deeds, but according to thy mercy. |
| 47 Movido Simão de piedade, não os combateu mais; contudo lançou-os fora da cidade, purificou as casas em que havia ídolos, e então é que entrou nela, entre hinos de louvor e cânticos de acção de graças. | 47 And Simon being moved, did not destroy them: but yet he cast them out of the city, and cleansed the houses wherein there had been idols, and then he entered into it with hymns, blessing the Lord. |
| 48 Depois de tiradas da cidade todas as imundícies (idolátricas) pôs nela homens que observassem a lei; a seguir fortificou-a e fez nela habitação para si. | 48 And having cast out of it all uncleanness, he placed in it men that should observe the law: and he fortified it, and made it his habitation. |
| 49 Entretanto os ocupantes da cidadela de Jerusalém, que não podiam sair à região (vizinha), para comprar ou vender, viram-se reduzidos a uma grande fome, e muitos deles morreram à míngua. | 49 But they that were in the castle of Jerusalem were hindered from going out and coming into the country, and from buying and selling: and they were straitened with hunger, and many of them perished through famine. |
| 50 Gritaram a Simão, pedindo-lhe paz, e ele lha concedeu; contudo lançou-os fora da fortaleza e purificou-a de todas as contaminações. | 50 And they cried to Simon form peace, and he granted it to them: and he cast them out from thence, and cleansed the castle from uncleannesses. |
| 51 Entrou nela no dia vinte e três do segundo mês, no ano cento e setenta e um, entoando louvores, levando ramos de palmas, ao toque de harpas, de címbalos, de liras, e cantando hinos e cânticos, por ter sido exterminado de Israel um grande inimigo. | 51 And they entered into it the three and twentieth day of the second month, in the year one hundred and seventy-one, with thanksgiving, and branches of palm trees, and harps, and cymbals, and psalteries, and hymns, and canticles, because the great enemy was destroyed out of Israel. |
| 52 (Simão) ordenou que todos os anos se celebrasse este dia com alegria. | 52 And he ordained that these days should be kept every year with gladness. |
| 53 Fortificou também o monte do templo, que era perto da cidadela, e habitou ali com os seus. | 53 And he fortified the mountain of the temple that was near the castle, and he dwelt there himself, and they that were with him. |
| 54 Em seguida, vendo Simão que João, seu filho, era um homem valente, fê-lo chefe de todas as tropas, com a residência em Gazara. | 54 And Simon saw that John his son was a valiant man for war: and he made him captain of all the forces: and he dwelt in Gazara. |
