| 1 Jónatas, vendo que as circunstâncias lhe eram favoráveis, escolheu certos homens e enviou-os a Roma, a confirmar e renovar a amizade com os Romanos. | 1 When Jonathan saw that the times favored him, he sent selected men to Rome to confirm and renew his friendship with the Romans. |
| 2 Mandou também aos Espartanos e a outros lugares cartas do mesmo teor. | 2 He also sent letters to Sparta and other places for the same purpose. |
| 3 Foram (os seus embaixadores) a Roma e entraram no senado, onde disseram: Jónatas, sumo sacerdote, e o povo judeu enviaram-nos aqui a renovar convosco a amizade e a aliança, como eram nos tempos passados. | 3 After reaching Rome, the men entered the senate chamber and said, "The high priest Jonathan and the Jewish people have sent us to renew the earlier friendship and alliance between you and them." |
| 4 (Os Romanos) deram-lhes cartas dirigidas aos (detentores da autoridade romana) de cada lugar, para eles os fazerem conduzir em paz até á Judeia. | 4 The Romans gave them letters addressed to the authorities in the various places, requesting them to provide the envoys with safe conduct to the land of Judah. |

| 6 Jónatas, sumo sacerdote, o conselho da nação, os sacerdotes e o resto do povo judeu, aos Espartanos, seus irmãos, saúde. | 6 "Jonathan the high priest, the senate of the nation, the priests, and the rest of the Jewish people send greetings to their brothers the Spartans. |
| 7 Em tempos passados foram enviadas cartas ao sumo sacerdote Onias por Ario, que reinava sobre vós, nas quais se lia que sois nossos irmãos, como se vê pela cópia que junto. | 7 Long ago a letter was sent to the high priest Onias from Arius, who then reigned over you, stating that you are our brothers, as the attached copy shows. |
| 8 Onias acolheu com grande honra o mensageiro enviado e recebeu (favoravelmente) as cartas onde se falava de aliança e amizade. | 8 Onias welcomed the envoy with honor and received the letter, which clearly referred to alliance and friendship. |
| 9 Nós, posto que não necessitemos destas coisas, pois temos por consolação os santos livros, que estão entre nossas mãos, | 9 Though we have no need of these things, since we have for our encouragement the sacred books that are in our possession, |
| 10 quisemos contudo enviar-vos mensageiros para renovar a fraternidade e a amizade, temendo não viessemos a ficar como estranhos a vosso respeito, visto ter já passado muito tempo, desde que cá mandastes (aquela embaixada). | 10 we have ventured to send word to you for the renewal of brotherhood and friendship, so as not to become strangers to you altogether; a long time has passed since your mission to us. |
| 11 Em todo o tempo sem interrupção, nos dias solenes e nos outros dias sagrados, nos lembramos de vós nos sacrifícios que oferecemos e nas nossas orações, pois é justo e razoável lembrar os irmãos. | 11 We, on our part, have never ceased to remember you in the sacrifices and prayers that we offer on our feasts and other appropriate days, as it is right and proper to remember brothers. |
| 12 Rejubilamos com a vossa glória. | 12 We likewise rejoice in your renown. |
| 13 Quanto a nós, têm-nos cercado grandes tribulações e várias guerras, e têm-nos invadido os reis circunvizinhos. | 13 But many hardships and wars have beset us, and the kings around us have attacked us. |
| 14 Entretanto não quisemos ser pesados, nem a vós nem aos outros aliados e nossos amigos, em todos estes combates, | 14 We did not wish to be troublesome to you and to the rest of our allies and friends in these wars; |
| 15 porque temos o socorro do céu, e fomos livres, e os nossos inimigos foram humilhados. | 15 with the help of Heaven for our support, we have been saved from our enemies, and they have been humbled. |
| 16 Portanto escolhemos Numénio, filho de Antíoco, e Antípatro, filho de Jasão, os quais enviámos aos Romanos a renovar a antiga aliança e amizade com eles. | 16 So we have chosen Numenius, son of Antiochus, and Antipater, son of Jason, and we have sent them to the Romans to renew our former friendship and alliance with them. |
| 17 Também lhes demos ordem de ir ter convosco, a saudar-vos da nossa parte e levar-vos as nossas cartas sobre a renovação da nossa confraternidade. | 17 We have also ordered them to come to you and greet you, and to deliver to you our letter about the renewal of our brotherhood. |
| 18 E agora dar-nos-eis gosto, respondendo-nos a isto. | 18 Therefore kindly send us an answer on this matter." |

| 20 Ario, rei dos Espartanos, ao sumo sacerdote Onias, saúde. | 20 "Arius, king of the Spartans, sends greetings to Onias the high priest. |
| 21 Achou-se aqui, num escrito sobre os Espartanos e os Judeus, que eles são irmãos e descendem de Abraão. | 21 A document has been found stating that the Spartans and the Jews are brothers; both nations descended from Abraham. |
| 22 Agora, pois, desde que sabemos isto, fazeis bem em nos escrever acerca da vossa prosperidade. | 22 Now that we have learned this, kindly write to us about your welfare. |
| 23 Também nós vos escreveremos. Os vossos gados e os vossos bens são nossos, e os nossos são vossos. Isto é o que ordenamos que vos seja declarado da nossa parte. | 23 We, on our part, are informing you that your cattle and your possessions are ours, and ours are yours. We have, therefore, given orders that you should be told of this." |
| 24 Entretanto Jónatas, tendo ouvido dizer que os generais de Demétrio haviam tornado com um exército muito maior que o anterior, para pelejar contra ele, | 24 Jonathan heard that the generals of Demetrius had returned to attack him with a stronger army than before. |
| 25 partiu de Jerusalém e foi-lhes ao encontro, no país de Hamath, para não lhes dar tempo de entrarem pelas suas terras. | 25 He set out from Jerusalem and went into the country of Hamath to meet them, giving them no time to enter his province. |
| 26 Mandou espiões ao acampamento (dos inimigos), os quais, depois de voltarem avisaram que eles tinham resolvido surpreendê-los de noite. | 26 The spies he had sent into their camp came back and reported that the enemy had made ready to attack the Jews that very night. |
| 27 Logo, pois, que se pôs o sol, mandou Jónatas aos seus que vigiassem e estivessem toda a noite sobre as armas, prontos para a peleja, e dispôs sentinelas em volta do acampamento. | 27 Therefore, when the sun set, Jonathan ordered his men to be on guard and to remain armed, ready for combat, throughout the night. He also set outposts all around the camp. |
| 28 Os inimigos, ao saberem que Jónatas com os seus se conservavam prestes para o combate, tiveram medo, ficaram apavorados e acenderam fogos no seu acampamento. | 28 When the enemy heard that Jonathan and his men were ready for battle, their hearts sank with fear and dread. They lighted fires and then withdrew. |
| 29 Mas Jónatas e os que com ele estavam não deram fé da sua retirada, até pela manhã, porque viam as fogueiras acesas. | 29 But because Jonathan and his men were watching the lights burning, they did not know what had happened until morning. |
| 30 Então Jónatas foi atrás deles, mas não os pode apanhar, porque já tinham passado o rio Eleutero. | 30 Then Jonathan pursued them, but he could not overtake them, for they had crossed the river Eleutherus. |
| 31 Dali marchou Jónatas contra os Árabes, chamados Zabadeus, desbaratou-os e tomou os seus despojos. | 31 So Jonathan turned aside against the Arabs who are called Zabadeans, overwhelming and plundering them. |
| 32 Depois reuniu a sua gente e foi a Damasco, percorrendo toda aquela região. | 32 Then he marched on to Damascus and traversed that whole region. |
| 33 Ao mesmo tempo saiu Simão e foi até Ascalon e às fortalezas vizinhas; de lá partiu para Jope e tomou-a, | 33 Simon also set out and went as far as Ashkalon and its neighboring strongholds. He then turned to Joppa and occupied it, |
| 34 porque ouviu dizer que eles queriam entregar a praça aos do partido de Demétrio, e pôs ali uma guarnição para a defender. | 34 for he heard that its men had intended to hand over this stronghold to the supporters of Demetrius. He left a garrison there to guard it. |
| 35 Regressado Jónatas (a Jerusalém) convocou os anciães do povo e resolveu com eles levantar fortalezas na Judeia, | 35 When Jonathan returned, he assembled the elders of the people, and with them he made plans for building strongholds in Judea, |
| 36 altear os muros de Jerusalém e construir um muro de grande altura entre a fortaleza e a cidade, para a separar da cidade, de sorte que ficasse sem comunicação e se não pudesse lá comprar nem vender. | 36 for making the walls of Jerusalem still higher, and for erecting a high barrier between the citadel and the city, that would isolate the citadel and so prevent its garrison from commerce with the city. |
| 37 Reunidos os operários para edificarem a cidade, desabou uma parte do muro, que estava sobre a torrente (do Cedron), da banda oriental, parte que foi restaurada com o nome de Cafenata. | 37 The people therefore worked together on building up the city, for part of the east wall above the ravine had collapsed. The quarter called Chaphenatha was also repaired. |
| 38 Simão também edificou Adida em Sefela, fortificou-a e pôs-lhe portas e ferrolhos. | 38 Simon likewise built up Adida in the Shephelah, and strengthened its fortifications by providing them with gates and bars. |
| 39 Trifão planejava, entretanto, fazer-se rei da Ásia, tomar o diadema e excluir o rei Antíoco. | 39 Trypho was determined to become king of Asia, assume the crown, and do away with King Antiochus. |
| 40 Temendo que Jónatas lho impedisse e lhe declarasse guerra, buscava meios de se apoderar dele e de o matar. Levantando o seu acampamento, foi para Betsan. | 40 But he was afraid that Jonathan would not permit him, but would fight against him. Looking for a way to seize and kill him, he set out and reached Beth-shan. |
| 41 Jónatas marchou ao seu encontro com quarenta mil homens escolhidos, para lhe dar batalha, e avançou até Betsan. | 41 Jonathan marched out against him with forty thousand picked fighting men and came to Beth-shan. |
| 42 Quando Trifão viu que Jónatas tinha chegado com um grande exército, temeu lançar-lhe a mão. | 42 But when Trypho saw that Jonathan had arrived with a large army he was afraid to offer him violence. |
| 43 Recebeu-o com honra, recomendou-o a todos os seus amigos, deu-lhe presentes e mandou a todo o seu exército que lhe obedecesse, como a ele próprio. | 43 Instead, he received him with honor, introduced him to all his friends, and gave him presents. He also ordered his friends and soldiers to obey him as they would himself. |
| 44 Depois disse a Jónatas: Por que fatigaste inutilmente todo este povo, quando nós não temos guerra um com outro? | 44 Then he said to Jonathan: "Why have you put all your soldiers to so much trouble when we are not at war? |
| 45 Manda-os, pois, agora para suas casas; escolhe (apenas) entre eles alguns que fiquem contigo e vem comigo para Ptolemaida, que eu ta entregarei com as outras fortalezas, as outras tropas e com todos os que têm a intendência dos negócios; e depois me retirarei. Com efeito, para isto é que eu vim. | 45 Pick out a few men to stay with you, send the rest back home, and then come with me to Ptolemais. I will hand it over to you together with other strongholds and their garrisons, as well as the officials, then I will leave and go home. That is why I came here." |
| 46 Jónatas acreditou nele e fez o que lhe disse; Despediu as suas tropas, que voltaram para a terra de Judá. | 46 Jonathan believed him and did as he said. He dismissed his troops, and they returned to the land of Judah. |
| 47 Reteve consigo (somente) três mil homens, dos quais mandou (ainda) dois mil para a Galileia; (só) mil foram com ele. | 47 But he kept with him three thousand men, of whom he sent two thousand to Galilee while one thousand accompanied him. |
| 48 Mas, logo que Jónatas entrou em Ptolemaida, os Ptolemenses fecharam as portas da cidade, prenderam-no e passaram ao fio da espada todos os que o haviam acompanhado. | 48 Then as soon as Jonathan had entered Ptolemais, the men of the city closed the gates and seized him; all who had entered with him, they killed with the sword. |
| 49 Ao mesmo tempo, Trifão enviou as suas tropas e a cavalaria para a Galileia e para a grande planície, a fim de matarem todos os companheiros de Jónatas. | 49 Trypho sent soldiers and cavalry to Galilee and the Great Plain to destroy all Jonathan's men. |
| 50 Estes, porém, tendo subido que Jónatas fora preso e perecera com todos os que com ele estavam, uns aos outros se animaram, e saíram, em fileiras cerradas, dispostos a combater. | 50 These, upon learning that Jonathan had been captured and his companions killed, encouraged one another and went out in compact body ready to fight. |
| 51 Os seus perseguidores, todavia, vendo-os resolvidos a defender suas vidas, tornaram para trás. | 51 As their pursuers saw that they were ready to fight for their lives, they turned back. |
| 52 Assim eles voltaram todos em paz para a terra de Judá. Choraram a Jónatas e aos seus companheiros, e ficaram muito receosos. Todo Israel tomou pesado luto. | 52 Thus all these men of Jonathan came safely into the land of Judah. They mourned over Jonathan and his men, and were in great fear, and all Israel fell into deep mourning. |
| 53 Então todos os povos, que estavam ao redor deles, procuraram perdê-los, porque diziam: | 53 All the nations round about sought to destroy them. They said, "Now that they have no leader to help them, let us make war on them and wipe out their memory from among men." |
| 54 Não têm chefe nem quem os auxilie; ataquemo-los pois, agora, e apaguemos a sua memória entre os homens. | |
