| 1 Quando se fez tarde, os criados de Holofernes retiraram-se apressados para os seus quartos, Vagao fechou as portas da câmara e foi-se embora. | 1 Now when the evening was come, his servants made haste to depart, and Bagoas shut his tent without, and dismissed the waiters from the presence of his lord; and they went to their beds: for they were all weary, because the feast had been long. |
| 2 Estavam todos tomados do vinho. | 2 And Judith was left along in the tent, and Holofernes lying along upon his bed: for he was filled with wine. |
| 3 Judit ficou só na câmara. | 3 Now Judith had commanded her maid to stand without her bedchamber, and to wait for her. coming forth, as she did daily: for she said she would go forth to her prayers, and she spake to Bagoas according to the same purpose. |
| 4 Holofernes estava deitado no leito, profundamente adormecido por causa da extraordinária embriaguez. | 4 So all went forth and none was left in the bedchamber, neither little nor great. Then Judith, standing by his bed, said in her heart, O Lord God of all power, look at this present upon the works of mine hands for the exaltation of Jerusalem. |
| 5 Então Judit disse à sua criada que estivesse de fora, à porta da câmara, e vigiasse. | 5 For now is the time to help thine inheritance, and to execute thine enterprizes to the destruction of the enemies which are risen against us. |
| 6 Judit, em pé diante do leito, orando com lágrimas, movendo os lábios em silêncio, | 6 Then she came to the pillar of the bed, which was at Holofernes' head, and took down his fauchion from thence, |
| 7 disse: Senhor Deus de Israel, da-me força e favorece neste momento a empresa das minhas mãos, a fim de que, como prometeste, levantes a tua cidade de Jerusalém, e eu acabe o que julguei que se podia fazer com o teu auxílio. | 7 And approached to his bed, and took hold of the hair of his head, and said, Strengthen me, O Lord God of Israel, this day. |
| 8 Dito isto, encostou-se à coluna, que estava à cabeceira do leito de Holofernes, e desprendeu o seu alfange, que eslava pendurado e preso nela. | 8 And she smote twice upon his neck with all her might, and she took away his head from him. |
| 9 Tendo-o desembainhado, agarrou nos cabelos da cabeça de Holofernes, dizendo: Senhor Deus, dá-me força neste momento. | 9 And tumbled his body down from the bed, and pulled down the canopy from the pillars; and anon after she went forth, and gave Holofernes his head to her maid; |
| 10 (Então) Descarregou-lhe dois golpes, sobre a nuca, e cortou-lhe a cabeça. Depois desprendeu das colunas o cortinado (para o levar como trofeu), e deitou por terra o seu corpo decapitado. | 10 And she put it in her bag of meat: so they twain went together according to their custom unto prayer: and when they passed the camp, they compassed the valley, and went up the mountain of Bethulia, and came to the gates thereof. |
| 11 Pouco tempo depois, saiu e entregou à sua escrava a cabeça de Holofernes, mandando que a metesse no seu saco. | 11 Then said Judith afar off, to the watchmen at the gate, Open, open now the gate: God, even our God, is with us, to shew his power yet in Jerusalem, and his forces against the enemy, as he hath even done this day. |
| 12 Em seguida, saíram ambas, conforme o seu costume, como se fossem para a oração; passaram além do campo, e, rodeando o vale, chegaram à porta da cidade. | 12 Now when the men of her city heard her voice, they made haste to go down to the gate of their city, and they called the elders of the city. |
| 13 Judit gritou de longe aos guardas dos muros: Abri as portas, porque Deus é connosco; ele fez uma coisa maravilhosa em Israel. | 13 And then they ran all together, both small and great, for it was strange unto them that she was come: so they opened the gate, and received them, and made a fire for a light, and stood round about them. |
| 14 Tendo os homens ouvido a sua voz, chamaram os anciãos da cidade. | 14 Then she said to them with a loud voice, Praise, praise God, praise God, I say, for he hath not taken away his mercy from the house of Israel, but hath destroyed our enemies by mine hands this night. |
| 15 Todos correram a ela, desde o mais pequeno até ao maior, porque já não esperavam que ela voltasse. | 15 So she took the head out of the bag, and shewed it, and said unto them, behold the head of Holofernes, the chief captain of the army of Assur, and behold the canopy, wherein he did lie in his drunkenness; and the Lord hath smitten him by the hand of a woman. |
| 16 Acendendo luminárias, juntaram-se todos ao redor dela. Judit, subindo a um lugar mais alto, ordenou que se fizesse silêncio. Quando todos se calaram, | 16 As the Lord liveth, who hath kept me in my way that I went, my countenance hath deceived him to his destruction, and yet hath he not committed sin with me, to defile and shame me. |
| 17 Judit disse: Louvai o Senhor nosso Deus, que não desamparou os que esperavam nele; | 17 Then all the people were wonderfully astonished, and bowed themselves and worshipped God, and said with one accord, Blessed be thou, O our God, which hast this day brought to nought the enemies of thy people. |
| 18 cumpriu por meio de mim, sua serva, a misericórdia que tinha prometido à casa de Israel; matou esta noite pela minha mão o inimigo do seu povo. | 18 Then said Ozias unto her, O daughter, blessed art thou of the most high God above all the women upon the earth; and blessed be the Lord God, which hath created the heavens and the earth, which hath directed thee to the cutting off of the head of the chief of our enemies. |
| 19 Tirando, então, do saco a cabeça de Holofernes, mostrou-lha, dizendo: Eis aqui a cabeça de Holofernes, general do exército dos Assírios, eis aqui o seu cortinado, debaixo do qual ele estava deitado na sua embriaguez, onde o Senhor nosso Deus o degolou pela mão duma mulher. | 19 For this thy confidence shall not depart from the heart of men, which remember the power of God for ever. |
| 20 Juro-vos, contudo, pelo mesmo Senhor, que o seu anjo me guardou, tanto ao sair desta cidade, como ao demorar-me lá, e como ao voltar para aqui, e o Senhor não permitiu que eu, sua serva, fosse manchada: fez-me voltar para vós sem nenhuma mácula de pecado, cheia de alegria por sua vitória, pela minha salvação e pela vossa libertação. | 20 And God turn these things to thee for a perpetual praise, to visit thee in good things because thou hast not spared thy life for the affliction of our nation, but hast revenged our ruin, walking a straight way before our God. And all the people said; So be it, so be it. |
| 21 Louvai-o todos, porque é bom, porque a sua misericórdia é eterna. | |
| 22 Então todos, adorando o Senhor, disseram-lhe: O Senhor te abençoou com a sua fortaleza, porque ele por ti aniquilou os nossos inimigos. | |
| 23 Ozias, príncipe do povo de Israel, disse-lhe: Ó filha, tu és bendita do Senhor Deus Altíssimo, sobre todas as mulheres que há na terra. | |
| 24 Bendito seja o Senhor, que criou o céu e a terra, que te dirigiu para cortares a cabeça do nosso maior inimigo, | |
| 25 Hoje engrandeceu o teu nome tanto, que nunca o teu louvor se apartará da boca dos que se lembrarem eternamente do poder do Senhor, por amor dos quais tu não poupaste a tua vida, ao ver as angústias e a tribulação do teu povo, mas impediste a sua ruína na presença do nosso Deus. | |
| 26 Todo o povo respondeu: Assim seja, assim seja. | |
| 27 Aquior sendo chamado, veio, e Judit disse-lhe: O Deus de Israel, de quem tu testemunhaste que tira vingança dos seus inimigos, esse mesmo cortou esta noite pela minha mão a cabeça (do chefe) de todos os infiéis. | |
| 28 Para que tu fiques persuadido de que é assim, eis a cabeça de Holofernes, que, na insolência da sua soberba, desprezou o Deus de Israel, e te ameaçou de morte, dizendo: Logo que o povo de Israel for feito cativo, mandarei passar-te ao fio da espada. | |
| 29 Aquior, vendo a cabeça de Holofernes, aterrado de pavor, caiu com o rosto por terra, sem sentidos. | |
| 30 Depois que, recobrados os sentidos, voltou a si, lançou-se aos seus pés e disse: | |
| 31 Tu és bendita do teu Senhor em todas as tendas de Jacob, porque entre todos os povos que ouvirem o teu nome, o Deus de Israel será glorificado em ti. | |
