| 2 Tendo ouvido isto Jeroboão, filho de Nabat, que estava no Egito (pois tinha fugido para lá da presença de Salomão), voltou logo, | 2 As soon as Jeroboam son of Nebat heard the news -- he was in Egypt, where he had taken refugefrom King Solomon -- he returned from Egypt. |
| 3 pois o mandaram chamar. Então ele e todo o Israel foram e falaram a Roboão desta maneira: | 3 They now sent for him, so Jeroboam and al Israel came and spoke as fol ows to Rehoboam, |
| 4 Teu pai oprimiu-nos com um jugo duríssimo; tu trata-nos com mais brandura do que teu pai, que nos impôs uma grave servidão, alivia-nos um pouco a carga, e nós seremos teus servos. | 4 'Your father laid a cruel yoke on us; if you wil lighten your father's cruel slavery, that heavy yoke whichhe imposed on us, we are wil ing to serve you.' |
| 5 Ele disse-lhes: Tornai a vir daqui a trés dias. Depois que o povo se retirou, | 5 He said to them, 'Come back to me in three days' time.' And the people went away. |
| 6 teve Roboão conselho com os anciães que tinham sido ministros de Salomão, seu pai, durante a sua vida, e disse-lhes: Que me aconselhais que eu responda ao povo? | 6 King Rehoboam then consulted the elders, who had been in attendance on his father Solomon whilehe was alive, and said, 'How do you advise me to answer this people?' |
| 7 Eles disseram-lhe: Se contentares este povo, e se o atenderes com palavras doces, eles te servirão para sempre. | 7 They replied, 'If you are fair to these people, pleasant to them and give them a fair reply, they wilremain your servants for ever.' |
| 8 Ele, porém, abandonou o conselho dos anciães, e começou a consultar os jovens que tinham sido criados com ele estavam na sua companhia. | 8 But he rejected the advice given him by the elders and consulted the young men in attendance onhim, who had grown up with him. |
| 9 Disse-lhes: Que vos parece? Que devo eu responder a este povo que me veio dizer: Alivia-nos o jugo que teu pai nos impôs? | 9 He said, 'How do you advise us to answer these people who have been saying, "Lighten the yokewhich your father imposed on us"?' |
| 10 — Eles responderam como jovens e como criados com ele nas delícias, desta forma: Assim responderás ao povo que te veio dizer: Teu pai fez pesadíssimo o nosso jugo, tu alivia-o; assim lhe responderás: O meu dedo mendinho é mais grosso do que as costas de meu pai, | 10 The young men who had grown up with him replied, 'This is the way to answer the people who havebeen saying, "Your father made our yoke heavy, you must lighten it for us!" This is the right thing to say to them,"My little finger is thicker than my father's loins! |
| 11 meu pai pôs-vos um jugo pesado, mas eu lhe acrescentarei maior peso; meu pai castigou-vos com açoutes, eu castigar-vos-ei com escorpiões. | 11 Although my father laid a heavy yoke on you, I shal make it heavier stil ! My father controlled youwith the whip, but I shal apply a spiked lash!" ' |
| 12 Ao terceiro dia, Jeroboão e todo o povo foram ter com Roboão, segundo ele lhes tinha ordenado. | 12 On the third day, Jeroboam and al the people came to Rehoboam in obedience to the king'sinstructions, 'Come back to me in three days' time.' |
| 13 O rei, não fazendo caso do conselho dos anciães, respondeu-lhes com dureza, | 13 And the king gave them a harsh answer. King Rehoboam, rejecting the advice of the elders, |
| 14 segundo o conselho dos jovens: Meu pai pôs-vos um jugo pesado, mas eu o farei mais pesado; meu pai castigou-vos com açoutes, eu castigar-vos-ei com escorpiões. | 14 spoke to them as the young men had recommended, 'My father made your yoke heavy, but I shaladd to it. My father control ed you with the whip, but I shal apply a spiked lash.' |
| 15 O rei não condescendeu com as súplicas do povo, porque era da vontade de Deus que se cumprisse a palavra que tinha dito a Jeroboão, filho de Nabat, por meio de Aías Silonita. | 15 Thus the king refused to listen to the people, and this was brought about by God, so that Yahwehmight fulfil the promise which he had made through Ahijah of Shiloh to Jeroboam son of Nebat. |
| 16 Então todo o povo, ao ouvir tão dura resposta do rei disse-lhe assim: Não temos parte com Davide, nem herança com o filho de Isaí. Volta, Israel, para as tuas tendas, e tu, Davide, governa a tua casa. | 16 When al Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, the people answered the king thus: Whatshare have we in David? -no heritage in the son of Jesse! Each of you, to your tents, Israel! Now look to yourown house, David! So Israel went home again. |
| 17 Roboão ficou reinando (sòmente) sobre os filhos de Israel, que habitavam nas cidades de Judá. | 17 Rehoboam, however, reigned over those Israelites who lived in the towns of Judah. |
| 18 Então o rei Roboão enviou Adurão, que era superintendente dos tributos, mas os filhos de Israel apedrejaram-no, e ele morreu. Em vista disto o rei Roboão montou apressadamente no seu carro e fugiu para Jerusalém. | 18 When King Rehoboam sent Adoram who was in charge of forced labour, the Israelites stoned him todeath, while King Rehoboam managed to mount his chariot and escape to Jerusalem. |
| 19 Assim Israel separou-se da casa de Davide até ao dia de hoje. | 19 And Israel has remained in rebel ion against the House of David from that day to this. |
