| 1 Elias Tesbita, um dos habitantes de Galaad, disse a Acab: Viva o Senhor Deus de Israel, em cuja presença estou, que nestes anos não cairá nem orvalho nem chuva, senão conforme as palavras da minha boca. | 1 And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word. |
| 2 Dirigiu o Senhor a sua palavra a Elias, nestes termos; | 2 And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, |
| 3 Retira-te daqui, vai para a banda do oriente e esconde-te junto da torrente de Carit, que está defronte do Jordão. | 3 Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan. |
| 4 Beberás da torrente, e eu mandei aos corvos que te sustentem ali mesmo. | 4 And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there. |
| 5 Partiu, pois, e procedeu segundo a ordem do Senhor: alojou-se junto da torrente de Garit, que está defronte do Jordão. | 5 So he went and did according unto the word of the LORD: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan. |
| 6 Os corvos traziam-lhe pela manhã pão e carne, e de tarde também pão e carne, e ele bebia da torrente. | 6 And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook. |
| 7 Decorrido um certo tempo, secou-se a torrente, porque não tinha chovido sobre a terra. | 7 And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land. |
| 8 Falou-lhe então o Senhor assim: | 8 And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, |
| 9 Levanta-te, vai para Sarefta dos Sidónios e fixa lá a tua morada, porque eu ordenei a uma mulher viúva que te sustente. | 9 Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee. |
| 10 Levantou-se e foi para Sarefta. Tendo ele chegado à porta da cidade, apareceu-lhe uma mulher viúva, que apanhava lenha. Ele chamou-a e disse-lhe: Dá-me num vaso um pouco de água para beber. | 10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink. |
| 11 Quando ela lha ia buscar, Elias chamou-a outra vez e disse: Traze-me também, te peço, um bocado de pão na tua mão. | 11 And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand. |
| 12 Ela respondeu-lhe: Viva o Senhor teu Deus, que eu não tenho pão, senão sòmente um pouco de farinha na panela, e um pouco de azeite na almotolia. Ando a apanhar um pouco de lenha, a fim de a ir cozer para mim e para meu filho, para comermos e depois (de gasto estes restos) morreremos (de fome). | 12 And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die. |
| 13 Elias disse-lhe: Não temas, mas vai e faze como disseste; porém faze primeiro para mim desse pouco de farinha um pãozinho cozido, debaixo do rescaldo, e traze-mo; para ti e para teu filho, farás depois. | 13 And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son. |
| 14 Com efeito, o Senhor Deus de Israel diz assim: A farinha que está na panela não faltará, nem se diminuirá na almotolia o azeite, até ao dia em que o Senhor faça cair chuva sobre a terra. | 14 For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth. |
| 15 Foi a mulher e fez como Elias lhe tinha dito; durante muito tempo ela teve que comer, e a sua casa e Elias. E desde aquele dia | 15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days. |
| 16 não faltou a farinha na panela, nem se diminuiu o azeite da almotolia, conforme o que o Senhor tinha predito por Elias. | 16 And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah. |
| 17 Aconteceu depois adoecer o filho desta mãe de família, e a doença era tão grave que já não respirava. | 17 And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him. |
| 18 Ela disse a Elias: Que te fiz eu, ó homem de Deus? Porventura vieste a minha casa para excitares em mim a memória dos meus pecados e matares o meu filho? | 18 And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son? |
| 19 Elias disse-lhe: Dá-me o teu filho. (Elias) tomou-o do regaço (da mãe), levou-o à câmara, onde ele estava alojado, e pô-lo em cima do seu leito. | 19 And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed. |
| 20 Depois clamou ao Senhor, assim: Senhor meu Deus, até a uma viúva, que me sustenta como pode, afligiste, matando-lhe seu filho? | 20 And he cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son? |
| 21 Estendeu-se, depois, inclinou-se três vezes sobre o menino, e gritou ao Senhor: Senhor, meu Deus, faze, te rogo, que a alma deste menino volte às suas entranhas. | 21 And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child's soul come into him again. |
| 22 O Senhor ouviu a voz de Elias: a alma do menino voltou a ele, e ele recuperou a vida. | 22 And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived. |
| 23 Elias tomou o menino, desceu-o da sua câmara à casa de baixo, entregou-o a sua mãe e disse-lhe: Aqui tens vivo o teu filho. | 23 And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother: and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth. |
| 24 A mulher respondeu a Elias: Agora conheço por isto que és um homem de Deus, e que a palavra do Senhor na tua boca é verdade. | 24 And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth. |
