Job 38

BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Yahveh respondió a Job desde el seno de la tempestad y dijo:	1 Then from the heart of the tempest Yahweh gave Job his answer. He said:
2 ¿Quién es éste que empaña el Consejo con razones sin sentido?	2 Who is this, obscuring my intentions with his ignorant words?
3 Ciñe tus lomos como un bravo: voy a interrogarte, y tú me instruirás.	3 Brace yourself like a fighter; I am going to ask the questions, and you are to inform me!
4 Dónde estabas tú cuando fundaba yo la tierra? Indícalo, si sabes la verdad.	4 Where were you when I laid the earth's foundations? Tel me, since you are so wel -informed!
5 ¿Quién fijó sus medidas? ¿lo sabrías? ¿quién tiró el cordel sobre ella?	5 Who decided its dimensions, do you know? Or who stretched the measuring line across it?
6 ¿Sobre qué se afirmaron sus bases? ¿quién asentó su piedra angular,	6 What supports its pil ars at their bases? Who laid its cornerstone
7 entre el clamor a coro de las estrellas del alba y las aclamaciones de todos los Hijos de Dios?	7 to the joyful concert of the morning stars and unanimous acclaim of the sons of God?
8 ¿Quién encerró el mar con doble puerta, cuando del seno materno salía borbotando;	8 Who pent up the sea behind closed doors when it leapt tumultuous from the womb,
9 cuando le puse una nube por vestido y del nubarrón hice sus pañales;	9 when I wrapped it in a robe of mist and made black clouds its swaddling bands;
10 cuando le tracé sus linderos y coloqué puertas y cerrojos?	10 when I cut out the place I had decreed for it and imposed gates and a bolt?
11 «¡Llegarás hasta aquí, no más allá - le dije -, aquí se romperá el orgullo de tus olas!»	11 'Come so far,' I said, 'and no further; here your proud waves must break!'
12 ¿Has mandado, una vez en tu vida, a la mañana, has asignado a la aurora su lugar,	12 Have you ever in your life given orders to the morning or sent the dawn to its post,
13 para que agarre a la tierra por los bordes y de ella sacuda a los malvados?	13 to grasp the earth by its edges and shake the wicked out of it?
14 Ella se trueca en arcilla de sello, se tiñe lo mismo que un vestido.	14 She turns it as red as a clay seal, she tints it as though it were a dress,
15 Se quita entonces su luz a los malvados, y queda roto el brazo que se alzaba.	15 stealing the light from evil-doers and breaking the arm raised to strike.
16 ¿Has penetrado hasta las fuentes del mar? ¿has circulado por el fondo del Abismo?	16 Have you been right down to the sources of the sea and walked about at the bottom of the Abyss?
17 ¿Se te han mostrado las puertas de la Muerte? ¿has visto las puertas del país de la Sombra?	17 Have you been shown the gates of Death, have you seen the janitors of the Shadow dark as death?
18 ¿Has calculado las anchuras de la tierra? Cuenta, si es que sabes, todo esto.	18 Have you an inkling of the extent of the earth? Tell me al about it if you have!
19 ¿Por dónde se va a la morada de la luz? y las tinieblas, ¿dónde tienen su sitio?,	19 Which is the way to the home of the Light, and where does darkness live? -
20 para que puedas llevarlas a su término, guiarlas por los senderos de su casa.	20 You could then show them the way to their proper places, you could put them on the path homeagain!
21 Si lo sabes, ¡es que ya habías nacido entonces, y bien larga es la cuenta de tus días!	21 If you do know, you must have been born when they were, you must be very old by now!
22 ¿Has llegado a los depósitos de nieve? ¿Has visto las reservas de granizo,	22 Have you visited the place where the snow is stored? Have you seen the stores of hail,
23 que yo guardo para el tiempo de angustia, para el día de batalla y de combate?	23 which I keep for times of distress, for days of battle and war?
24 ¿Por qué camino se reparte la luz, o se despliega el solano por la tierra?	24 From which direction does the lightning fork, where in the world does the east wind blow itself out?
25 ¿Quién abre un canal al aguacero, a los giros de los truenos un camino,	25 Who bores a channel for the downpour or clears the way for the rol ing thunder
26 para llover sobre tierra sin hombre, sobre el desierto donde no hay un alma,	26 so that rain may fal on lands where no one lives, and the deserts void of human dwel ing,
27 para abrevar a las soledades desoladas y hacer brotar en la estepa hierba verde?	27 to meet the needs of the lonely wastes and make grass sprout on the thirsty ground?
28 ¿Tiene padre la lluvia? ¿quién engendra las gotas de rocío?	28 Has the rain a father? Who begets the dewdrops?
29 ¿De qué seno sale el hielo? ¿quién da a luz la escarcha del cielo,	29 What womb brings forth the ice, who gives birth to the frost of heaven,
30 cuando las aguas se aglutinan como piedra y se congela la superficie del abismo?	30 when the waters grow hard as stone and the surface of the deep congeals?
31 ¿Puedes tú anudar los lazos de las Pléyades o desatar las cuerdas de Orión?	31 Can you fasten the harness of the Pleiades, or untie Orion's bands?
32 ¿Haces salir la Corona a su tiempo? ¿conduces a la Osa con sus crías?	32 Can you guide the Crown season by season and show the Bear and its cubs which way to go?
33 ¿Conoces las leyes de los Cielos? ¿aplicas su fuero en la tierra?	33 Have you grasped the celestial laws? Could you make their writ run on the earth?
34 ¿Levantas tu voz hasta las nubes?, la masa de las aguas, ¿te obedece?	34 Can your voice carry as far as the clouds and make the pent-up waters do your bidding?
35 A tu orden, ¿los relámpagos parten, diciéndote: «Aquí estamos»?	35 Will lightning flashes come at your command and answer, 'Here we are'?
36 ¿Quién puso en el ibis la sabiduría? ¿quién dio al gallo inteligencia?	36 Who endowed the ibis with wisdom and gave the cock his intel igence?
37 ¿Quién tiene pericia para contar las nubes? ¿quién inclina los odres de los cielos,	37 Whose skil details every cloud and tilts the water-skins of heaven
38 cuando se aglutina el polvo en una masa y los terrones se pegan entre sí?	38 until the dust solidifies and the cracks in the ground close up?
39 ¿Cazas tú acaso la presa a la leona? ¿calmas el hambre de los leoncillos,	39 Do you go hunting prey for the lioness; do you satisfy the hunger of young lions
40 cuando en sus guaridas están acurrucados, o en los matorrales al acecho?	40 where they crouch in their den, waiting eagerly in the bushes?
41 ¿Quién prepara su provisión al cuervo, cuando sus crías gritan hacia Dios, cuando se estiran faltos de comida?	41 Who makes provision for the raven when his little ones cry out to God craning their necks in search offood?
