| 1 Lembra-te do teu Criador nos dias da tua juventude, antes que venham os dias maus e cheguem os anos, de que tu dirás: Esta idade não me agrada; | 1 Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come, and the years draw nigh, when you will say, "I have no pleasure in them"; |
| 2 antes que se escureça o sol, e a luz, e a lua, e as estrelas, e voltem as nuvens depois da chuva; | 2 before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars are darkened and the clouds return after the rain; |
| 3 quando os guardas de tua casa começarem a tremer, e os homens fortes a vergar, quando as que moem deixarem de moer por serem poucas e as que vêem pelas janelas principiarem a cobrir-se de trevas; | 3 in the day when the keepers of the house tremble, and the strong men are bent, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look through the windows are dimmed, |
| 4 quando se fecharem as portas sobre a rua, quando enfraquecer a voz do moinho, quando se calar a voz do pássaro e emudecerem as canções. | 4 and the doors on the street are shut; when the sound of the grinding is low, and one rises up at the voice of a bird, and all the daughters of song are brought low; |
| 5 Nessa altura (da vida) terão medo também (de subir) aos lugares altos, terão sobressaltos no caminho. A amendoeira florescerá, o gafanhoto engordará, e a alcaparra perderá as suas propriedades, porque o homem irá para a 'casa da sua eternidade, enquanto os carpidores percorrem as ruas. | 5 they are afraid also of what is high, and terrors are in the way; the almond tree blossoms, the grasshopper drags itself along and desire fails; because man goes to his eternal home, and the mourners go about the streets; |
| 6 (Lembra-te do teu Criador) antes que se quebre o cordão de prata e se despedace a lâmpada de oiro, e se parta o cântaro sobre a fonte, e se desfaça a roda sobre a cisterna, | 6 before the silver cord is snapped, or the golden bowl is broken, or the pitcher is broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern, |
| 7 e o pó volte à terra donde saiu, e o espírito volte para Deus que o deu. | 7 and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it. |
| 8 Vaidade de vaidade, disse o Eclesiaste, e tudo é vaidade. | 8 Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher; all is vanity. |
| 9 O Eclesiaste. além de ser um sábio, ensinou a ciência ao povo; estudou, investigou e compôs sentenças. | 9 Besides being wise, the Preacher also taught the people knowledge, weighing and studying and arranging proverbs with great care. |
| 10 Aplicou-se a encontrar palavras agradáveis e a escrever correctamente palavras de verdade. | 10 The Preacher sought to find pleasing words, and uprightly he wrote words of truth. |
| 11 As palavras dos sábios são como aguilhões, como cravos profundamente pregados, que, por meio do conselho dos mestres, nos foram comunicados pelo único pastor (que é Deus). | 11 The sayings of the wise are like goads, and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings which are given by one Shepherd. |
| 12 Não busques, pois, meu filho, mais coisa alguma além destas (verdades). Não se põe termo em multiplicar os livros, e a meditação freqüente é aflição da carne. | 12 My son, beware of anything beyond these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh. |
| 13 Ouçamos todos juntos o fim deste discurso: Teme a Deus e observa os seus mandamentos, porque isso é o homem todo. | 13 The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man. |
| 14 (Lembremo-nos que) Deus fará dar contas no seu juízo de todas as faltas, mesmo ocultas, de todo o bem e mal que se tiver feito. | 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil. |
